The Eulogy
I didn’t know the amount of pressure that would come with being the first and only speaker at a funeral. Being a former comedian, I am not afraid of a crowd, but this crowd looks intimidating and dull. As I look around this dark and dusty church in Jacksonville, Florida. A city I’ve grown up in with my best bud Dennis, I hear my name being called. “Alexander, would you please step up and share a few words?” The Pastor says, with an eerie look on his face. I rise from my seat and walk to the podium, …

Hurt To Love, Christa Kaye Jishelle Casidsid
Hurt To Love, Christa Kaye Jishelle Casidsid
Night Flight Journal
Family dynamics come in many different forms. Some are regarded by society as "healthy," others "toxic," but there are instances where there is a gray line. Once an only child grown to the older sibling, this daughter watches her family relationship. More particularly, she watches her parent that has been there by her side ever since she could remember. "Healthy" or "toxic" are words lost in confusion in her home. She cannot help but feel the pain of the actions and words from the years that built up in her struggle of endurance and martyr sacrifice.

The Psychology Of Dystopian And Post-Apocalyptic Stories: The Proverbial Question Of Whether Life Will Imitate Art, Donna Roberts
The Psychology Of Dystopian And Post-Apocalyptic Stories: The Proverbial Question Of Whether Life Will Imitate Art, Donna Roberts
International Bulletin of Political Psychology
Dystopian and Post-Apocalyptic genres challenge our notions of Aristotelian mimesis vs Anti-mimesis – i.e., In the study of the human condition, does life imitate art or art imitate life? Popular culture, then and now, provides us with examples to depict the circularity of these notions and the psychological importance of exploring this aspect of human nature, particularly the contemplation of our own collective demise. While we recoil in horror at the images these genres portray, we are also morbidly fascinated by them, and we can’t help but ask ourselves . . . Could that really happen? Will that happen?

Moving From Image To Narrative To Voice, Eileen Landis-Groom
Moving From Image To Narrative To Voice, Eileen Landis-Groom
Publications
As I review rubrics used for evaluating writing in my institution, I notice how voice often is a low priority or nonexistent criterion. Writing, however, with a voice awakens a reader; writing without a voice numbs the reader. Beginning with an image and moving to a narrative may provide writers with a voice, as it has for me. This article is a contemplation resulting from my own writing on the importance of images in generating not only a narrative but also a voice, in other words, a sense that a unique individual is conversing with another, the reader.

The Mysterious Incident Of The Missing Title: Why Did Titular Concern Vanish From Composition Studies?, John Lamothe

How much time, if any, do first-year writing instructors spend in class discussing the importance of titles on their students’ papers? Without looking at a mountain of lesson plans or interviewing a plethora of instructors from across the country, it is impossible to know what is and what isn’t commonly taught in first-year composition courses. Admittedly, introductory writing and research classes can vary greatly from institution to institution and even from instructor to instructor within the same department. However, judging by an examination of current First-Year Composition textbooks, Rhet/Comp scholars place little importance on discussing the effect of titles on …

By the time you finish reading this first sentence, you’ve already started forming a first impression about this article. In fact, you really started forming it after reading the title. With the words, “How to Win Papers and Influence Professors,” a spoof on the popular Dale Carnegie book, “How to Win Friends & Influence People,” I already began establishing a tone and setting up expectations for you, the reader. Whether you realized it or not, you had a reaction to that title. This shouldn’t come as a great shock. It’s human nature to form quick first impressions; we’ve all been …
