Once The Ashes Settled, Brittany Parker Jan 2019

Once The Ashes Settled, Brittany Parker

Honors Theses

She grabbed her ballcap that she had worn almost every day for the last thirteen years and started the short walk. A three blocks jaunt had its advantages on days like today, especially this morning. He promised he would pick up the roses and meet her here at eight which hopefully allowed them enough time to have a private moment before people started moving about. As she waited, she stole a few glances at the space around her, the water a constant reminder of what all had been taken in the background. It had changed so much over the years, …

Stories From Elsewhere: A Novella, Andrew Crook

Honors Theses

It's certainly rare to see people with animal heads while walking down the street, but it has been known to happen. On the occasions when a person does see someone with an animal head, they think something along the lines of, "Oh, what a quaint performer!" or something equally as posh and oblivious. Peter, however, was a man who didn't trust his own reasoning. Not if he could help it. So, when he happened to see a person with an animal head while walking down the street one fine Saturday, he paid attention. There it was, down the alley: a …

Crafting Comics: My Journey Through The Creative Process, Carrie Hill Jan 2019

Crafting Comics: My Journey Through The Creative Process, Carrie Hill

Honors Theses

When I was 12 years old, I drew a short, goofy comic book that followed the adventures of Carrie Hill and her wacky friends. Now as a 22-year-old graphic design student, I've continued to draw comics because they can tell stories with great depth using only a sequence of images. Whenever I read Ben Hatke's Zita the Spacegirl or Kate Beaton's Hark! A Vagrant, I dream of publishing a graphic novel or comic strip. This dream prompted me to create several comics for my thesis, exploring different genres and styles. My original intention was to develop several 10-page comics, …

Floral Imagery Within Wartime Era Poetry: How Its Usage Transforms Memory And Remembrance, Margaret Ann Donnell Dec 2018

Floral Imagery Within Wartime Era Poetry: How Its Usage Transforms Memory And Remembrance, Margaret Ann Donnell

History Class Publications

The World Wars had a devastating impact on the soldiers and citizens that lived and suffered through them. They stood a tremendous toll physically, mentally, and emotionally. For many, if it was even possible, an escape was needed. Any outlet that could provide a way to cope with and verbalize their experiences was an endeavor worth undertaking. The arts, especially poetry, was a way those within the wartime eras could express and process what they had endured.

Notes From Kilroy: A Collection Of Stories Inspired By The Lives Of Arkansas Wwii Veterans, Victoria Anderson

Honors Theses

No history is far from static, not even mine. Some people may think history is stuck in the past, along with the lives that have come before, but if that were the case, there would be no point in studying or even recording history. If it is truly something that dwells only in the past, unmoving, then it would not affect anyone--but it does. As William Faulkner said, "The past isn't dead. It isn't even past."

It is the same with God. God is not confined to a certain time or place. He surrounds his sons and daughters and guides …

The Game Warden's Gun, S. Ray Granade Nov 2017

The Game Warden's Gun, S. Ray Granade

Growing up in 1950s Evergreen, Alabama, meant more than growing up in a small, South-Alabama county-seat town. It meant growing up in a rural environment where hunting and fishing were never more than a few minutes away. Field and stream activities lured mostly males above the age of eight, and generous game laws did not obviate a brisk business in poaching. Since it was a poor county, Conecuh had its share of those who poached to put meat on the table as well as those who poached because they did not believe that game laws applied to them. Some prime …

Washington Irving And The Not-So-American Myth, Haydn Jeffers Dec 2016

Washington Irving And The Not-So-American Myth, Haydn Jeffers

English Class Publications

Washington Irving has often been revered as the father of American literature, and, more specifically, the father of the American myth. He was one of the first American writers to make a real living off his writing, and as such was considered to be America’s personal declarer of independence within the literary world. Having been viewed as so undoubtedly American in his writings, one might find interest in the fact that Irving drew very heavily on European sources in his inexplicable creation of this nation’s fiction, as it appears “he was not all that at ‘home’ with American life” (“Background: …

The Uses Of Disease, S. Ray Granade Nov 2016

The Uses Of Disease, S. Ray Granade

Our library occupied the end of one east-pointing wing in the old Evergreen High School building. In furnishings it resembled nothing as much as the traditional reading room: bare rectangular wooden tables surrounded by straight-backed hard-oak wooden chairs. Windows pierced the outside walls that bounded it on the south, east, and north sides. Around the walls rose short semi-full shelves of books that I never saw taken down in my years of occupying the building. No periodicals sat in sight, nor did any traditional finding aids for books or periodicals. At the room’s east end stood an elevated desk and …

The Best You Can, S. Ray Granade

Mary Washington taught History at what was then Howard College while I was a student. Possessed only of an MA, she epitomized the best of the “junior lecturer” tradition. She was widely read and traveled and displayed a love of learning on the one hand and an iron will that balanced that love on the other. Students found her immensely accessible while immensely knowledgeable—a powerful combination. Perhaps most significantly of all, she wedded her equanimity to the most pleasant of personalities. To contact her was to feel bathed in grace. To see her anywhere on campus was to see her …

Does Gendered Language Have An Effect On You?, Andrew John Stambolie, Angella Valencia, Olivia Allbright Apr 2016

Does Gendered Language Have An Effect On You?, Andrew John Stambolie, Angella Valencia, Olivia Allbright

Scholars Day

Our study tested the effects of gender exclusive and gender inclusive language on males’ and females’ feelings of ostracism, motivation, identification, and their emotions.

Research has shown that being rejected or ignored can have negative psychological effects. (Stout & Dasgupta, 2011).

Ostracism is both the act being ignored and excluded. It includes directly differing with the individual, indicating his or her failings, as well as actively denying being associated with this individual. (Cheung & Choi, 2000).

Discrimination can be understood as a larger sociological component that includes ostracism. (Cheung & Choi, 2000).

Research Question: Does the use of gender-inclusive and …

Physical And Psychological Balancing Act: Is Stability Desirable?, Abby Huggins, Marley Zochert, Nate Shrader Apr 2016

Physical And Psychological Balancing Act: Is Stability Desirable?, Abby Huggins, Marley Zochert, Nate Shrader

Scholars Day

Recent studies have conveyed that the physical instability of a person would alter the way they thought about other people’s relationships and the traits people seek in romantic partners. These studies also show that cordial physical experiences can impact people’s views of relationship stability (Kille, Forest, & Wood, 2013).

Confessing love for a significant other while seated in an unstable condition can alter how they truly feel if they were to be sitting in a stable condition (Forest, Kille, Wood, & Stehouwer, 2015).

Similarly, one study showed that being in a position that makes someone feel uncomfortable can influence what …

The Role Of Gender And Emotions On Moral Hypocrisy, Jordan K. Raglin, Tye G. Boudra-Bland, Tristan B. Benzon Apr 2016

The Role Of Gender And Emotions On Moral Hypocrisy, Jordan K. Raglin, Tye G. Boudra-Bland, Tristan B. Benzon

Scholars Day

Recent studies have shown that the emotions of anger and guilt have interesting effects on an individual’s moral hypocrisy. Anger increasing the likelihood that one will be hypocritical and guilt effectively neutralizes any hypocritical tendencies. (Polman & Ruttan, 2012)

We were keenly interested to see if we could duplicate these results at Ouachita and were also curious as to whether or not gender plays a role in how hypocritical a person will be.

We wanted to know if emotion or gender could negatively impact logical reasoning because if they do, we could keep this in mind while making judgments in …
