Views of the oecumenical movement range from an enthusiastic, if often shallow optimism, to a cautious, and sometimes bitter, suspicion. The thesis which I venture to offer is that only a radical emproach to oecumenicity can enable us to understand what is happening in this moment of Church history. Such a radical approach demands that we seek to understand the nature of human existence, the nature of the Church, and the nature of unitive activity within the Church.

The VELKD hopes to become the long-desired corpus Lutheranorum... Rudolph Rocholl (superintendent in Goettingen, Kirchenrat in Breslau, and president of the Prussian Lutheran Free Church) saw the disastrous influence of unionism more clearly than others and shortly after 1900 appealed to the Lutheran provincial churches to form a corpus Lutheranorum on a clearly defined confessional basis. His appeal was left unheeded.

Since the collapse of 1945 the church situation in Germany is horribly confused, for the political chaos seriously affected the church conditions. But even before the political collapse a number of trends developed in the Protestant churches which brought havoc to the churches. This disorder was accentuated by the political collapse to such a degree that conditions never were so confused in German church history as at present.

The 1947 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association took place at Ross Grove Baptist Church in Shelby, NC and New Bethel Baptist Church in Lawndale, NC. The introductory sermon was delivered by W. W. Harris. The Report on Christian Education mentioned important developments impacting Gardner-Webb College as it related to the Council on Christian Education. Issues were raised regarding the balance between the Council and the colleges in reference to colleges maintain independence but surrendering enough control to the Council to govern finances, curriculum, and church-school relationships.
