Transvaluation: The Way Of The Kingdom, Paul N. Anderson Jan 1981

Transvaluation: The Way Of The Kingdom, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "The Kingdom of God stands over and against the kingdoms of this world. While the kingdoms of this world are concerned with insuring their longevity the Kingdom of God remains unthreatened by the passing of time. It is eternal. Whereas the kingdoms of this world measure their greatness by the extension of their boundaries, the Kingdom of God need not prove itself by outward conquest. Its Glory lies in the reigning power of the King; and that power is Love. And while the kingdoms of this world erect structures for the purpose of self-preservation, the Kingdom of God poses …

The "Fires" Of Southern California, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "In early December, the San Bernadino hillside was ravaged by a fast-moving brush fire which destroyed more than 200 homes and damaged many more. Later that month, however, a fire of another sort came ablaze on the hillside. It was the spiritual fire of nearly 500 young Friends from 11 yearly meetings who converged upon the Campus Crusade Headquarters at Arrowhead Springs, from December 26 to January 1, for the second gathering called ''Youthquake." The Significance Of Dietrich Bonhoeffer Today, Veronica Ertis-Kojima Jan 1981

The Significance Of Dietrich Bonhoeffer Today, Veronica Ertis-Kojima

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The title of this thesis is “The Significance of Dietrich Bonhoeffer Today.” I intend to discuss and show, with the data obtained through research, that the life and thought of Dietrich Bonhoeffer addresses individuals and/or Christian communities in today’s world in their concern for specific issues regarding Christian and contemporary living. From the data I gathered, I found that Bonhoeffer spoke to three categories of individuals and/or Christian communities; that is, he spoke to theologians and lay individuals within the Christian tradition, to the institutional manifestations of the Christian Church, and to intellectuals outside of the Christian tract. I found …

St. Michael In The Arts, Ruth Jaenike Jan 1981

St. Michael In The Arts, Ruth Jaenike

Masters Theses

The objective of this thesis is to gather together under one cover samples of the many ways St. Michael is portrayed by creative artists in various locales and at different periods of time.

The first chapter is a condensation of the literature used for the study showing the characteristics attributed to St. Michael. He is portrayed as an Archangel existing in Heaven as the militant leader of the angels of God. He is purported to have appeared on earth as messenger of God, and is often considered judge and caretaker of man's soul after death. St. Michael is to have …

Christian Initiation: Ethics And Eschatology, Robert W. Jensen Jan 1981

Christian Initiation: Ethics And Eschatology, Robert W. Jensen

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

I did not choose the three terms of my assignment: "initiation", "ethics" and "eschatology." It would take a degree of arrogance that I do not have, to select the universe for one's subject in this fashion. While I did not choose them, I am fortunate in your committee having chosen them. For in fact, as it turns out, the three terms nestle beautifully together and define a field of reflection that I have found enjoyable. Baptism is initiation into the Christian church, an ethical community. And baptism is initiation into the kingdom of God, the eschatological community. And it …

The Influence Of Jewish Apocalyptic Literature On The Book Of Hebrews, Paul Schmidgall Dec 1980

The Influence Of Jewish Apocalyptic Literature On The Book Of Hebrews, Paul Schmidgall

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The Book of Hebrews has been interpreted from at least three religion historical angles: the Gnostic interpretation, the platonic/Philonic interpretation, and the apocalyptic interpretation. Since 1970, however, the apocalyptic interpretation is strongly favored. A study of the understanding of the writer of the book of Hebrews as pertaining to history (timo, the unity of history, the emphasis on the eschaton, the two-age motif), the concept of rest (katapausis), alleged Platonic dualism, Messianism, and angelology literature is the primary extra-biblical locus from which the writer of the Book of Hebrews draws.
