Buddhism And Christianity By George Siegmund, Philip Novak
Buddhism And Christianity By George Siegmund, Philip Novak
Collected Faculty Scholarship
"Influenced by the sympathetic explorations of Thomas Merton, William Johnston and Hugo Enomiya-LaSalle (to name but a few) Christians have over the last decade or so shown an increasing willingness to learn from the Buddhist tradition. An environment in which interest is accompanied by a deep bow of respect is precious and worthy of preservation, and it is for this reason that Buddhism and Christianity deserves attention. It threatens that environment." ~from the review

A Study Of The Views Of Major Eighteenth Century Evangelicals On Slavery And Race, With Special Reference To John Wesley, Irv A. Brendlinger
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
The rise of the British antislavery movement was the result of a complex interplay of a number of influences and factors. One of these factors was the resurgence of evangelical Christianity in the mid-eighteenth century. All of the eighteenth century antislavery leaders were committed churchmen ; most of them were staunch Evangelicals. It is the purpose of this study to examine selected specific attitudes and motives of the most significant antislavery leaders.
The first part of the thesis deals with William Wilberforce, John Newton , Thomas Clarkson James Ramsay, Granville Sharp, Anthony Benezet and John Wesley, exploring the following issues: …

Excerpt: "One reason I appreciate the Quaker tradition so deeply is the way that Friends simplify all else in order to heighten the spiritual reality of the Present Christ. From the testimony of the Quaker "patriarch" (about one, even Christ Jesus, who speaks to our conditions) to the "sacramental community" (which upholds the promise that where two or three are gathered in his name, Christ is present in their midst), Friends seek to experience in the present tense what it means to live under the Power of the Resurrected Lord."

Problem. Despite the tremendous educational achievements in Nigeria since the launching of the National Policy on Education in 1977, many Nigerians have continued to call for the restoration of mission-operated private schools. This study set out to establish the role of religion in present-day education in Nigeria and to explore ways in which the aims of Christian education could be achieved in addition to the formal school setting.
Summary and Conclusions. Utilizing the historical documentary research method, the study reviewed Nigeria's educational history from 1845 to 1980 in the light of the country's cultural, religious (Muslim and Christian), and political …

Excerpt: "Among the treasures which make life worth living, one stands out as the most precious and yet the most precarious. It is precious because it gives meaning to all that we do and accomplish. It is precarious because it is alive, and like all living things, without continual care and attention, it withers and dies. This treasure is friendship."
Fullness Of Life: Historical Foundations For A New Mysticism By Margaret R. Miles, Philip Novak
Fullness Of Life: Historical Foundations For A New Mysticism By Margaret R. Miles, Philip Novak
Collected Faculty Scholarship
"When in his poem 'Among School Children' W. B. Yeats spoke of that place where 'the body is not bruised to pleasure soul,' he unwittingly pointed to a task that has lately engaged the energies of a number of scholars of Christianity: how to revalorize the body in the Christian tradition and rescue it from its status as the spiritually detrimental half of human being. Margaret Miles, a professor of historical theology at Harvard Divinity School, has responded to this task with scholarship, style and insight." ~ from the article
