Yahweh As Father: The Image In Ancient Israelite Context And Modern Appropriation, Joshua Wayne Lovelace Jan 2011

Yahweh As Father: The Image In Ancient Israelite Context And Modern Appropriation, Joshua Wayne Lovelace

MA in Religion Theses

The goal of this thesis was to appropriate the image of Yahweh as father for modern Christendom in light of feminist critiques of the image. The methods in accomplishing this task were as follows: defining feminism and feminist biblical interpretation, conveying the critiques of Rosemary Radford Ruether and Julia M. O'Brien who were scholarly dialogue partners, studying the social milieu of ancient Israel, using historical, literary, textual, and social criticism to exegete texts that mention Yahweh as father, comparing findings of exegesis with social milieu of ancient Israel, responding to critiques of Ruether and O'Brien, and lastly taking the findings …

Walking To Emmaus: Strengthening Christian Religious Faith, David Allen Estep Jan 2011

Walking To Emmaus: Strengthening Christian Religious Faith, David Allen Estep

ATS Dissertations

This research project attempts to determine whether the Walk to Emmaus, as only one medium, correlates to the strength of a Christian‘s religious faith. The research project incorporated a quantitative research design using three instruments for crossvalidation purposes and a researcher-designed demographic questionnaire. The three research instruments used were the Santa Clara Strength of Religious Faith Questionnaire, the Duke Religion Index, and the Age Universal Religious Orientation Survey. The three quantitative instruments used tested the consistency of the results obtained through the different research instruments. The demographic instrument sought personal information concerning age, religious faith history, gender, and participation with …

The Dissonant Bible Quotation: Political And Narrative Dissension In Gaskell's Mary Barton, Jon Singleton Ph.D. Jan 2011

The Dissonant Bible Quotation: Political And Narrative Dissension In Gaskell's Mary Barton, Jon Singleton Ph.D.

English Faculty Research and Publications

Religious language exerted multivalent force in Victorian society, as this case study of Gaskell’s novel Mary Barton, Chartist political protest, and the weaponization of the Bible in contemporary social struggle makes clear. Scholars have established that different classes read the Bible differently; but I demonstrate how Gaskell makes the Bible read in several different ways for the same reader. Gaskell makes Bible quotations dissonant through her use of character and narration, in order to challenge the boundaries of readers’ political sympathies. This study shows how any religious utterance escapes the control and political interests of any class—and how its conflicting …

Clothing The Body Of Christ: An Inquiry About The Letters Of Paul, Martin Connell Jan 2011

Clothing The Body Of Christ: An Inquiry About The Letters Of Paul, Martin Connell

Theology Faculty Publications

In four decades of the reform of Roman Catholic worship after Vatican II, virtually no critical attention has been accorded the New Testament witness about Jesus' or the first-century church's clothing. It's a striking lacuna, for clothing is omnipresent in the New Testament. In this inquiry about clothing, I take up one aspect of the earliest Christian ritual tradition and suggest that ritual clothing has been excised from much of Christian imagination and its academy as a result of Protestant hegemony in biblical and historical criticism. By looking closely at what is said of clothing in the letters of Paul, I …

Biblical Sources In The Development Of The Concept Of The Soul In The Writings Of The Fathers Of The Early Christian Church, 100-325 C.E., Thomas W. Toews Jan 2011

Biblical Sources In The Development Of The Concept Of The Soul In The Writings Of The Fathers Of The Early Christian Church, 100-325 C.E., Thomas W. Toews

Dissertations

The topic of the human soul has seen renewed interest in recent years. Studies have been produced that have looked at the soul in light of modern science and medicine along with a continued focus on the thoughts of the ancients on this topic. The early Church Fathers played an important role in mediating the thoughts of the ancients to more recent times. Because of this role, it is important to understand what function the Scriptures had as a source of authority in this process.

In light of this, the following study researches and analyzes the usage of the two …

The Sabbath In The Pentateuch: An Exegetical And Theological Study, Mathilde Frey Jan 2011

The Sabbath In The Pentateuch: An Exegetical And Theological Study, Mathilde Frey

Dissertations

Many studies have explored the seventh-day Sabbath in the Pentateuch from historical-critical, theological, and historical perspectives. However, systematic contextual exegesis and close reading of the pentateuchal Sabbath texts have been neglected. This dissertation investigates literary features of these passages in their respective contexts and develops an integrated Sabbath theology from the viewpoint of the Pentateuch as a whole.

In chapter 1, an overview of literature on the biblical Sabbath introduces the topic and describes the methodology of the study. Chapters 2 to 5 explore specific contextual, stylistic, and linguistic elements of the pentateuchal Sabbath pericopes, which contribute to expression of …

"Levantine Thinking In Egypt" The Footprint Of Intellectual Influence, Kerry M. Muhlestein Jan 2011

"Levantine Thinking In Egypt" The Footprint Of Intellectual Influence, Kerry M. Muhlestein

Faculty Publications

Upon examination of material and textual remains, there is a great deal of evidence for more contact with the Levant than many have supposed. This contact took the form of both Eyptians in the Levant and Asiatics in Egypt. Futhermore, the Shipwrecked Sailor bears hallmarks of Levantine literature. This famous tale may thus say something significant about Egyptian/Levantine relations. It seems to attest to intellectual influence flowing into Egypt from the Levant.

Divorce And A Deafening Silence: Exegesis Of Exodus 21:10-11 In The Twentieth Century, Jeffrey A. White Jan 2011

Divorce And A Deafening Silence: Exegesis Of Exodus 21:10-11 In The Twentieth Century, Jeffrey A. White

Senior Honors Theses

With the publication of his 2002 Divorce and Remarriage in the Bible, David Instone-Brewer seemed to have ignited a firestorm—within Christian circles and without—over a millennia-old issue: the biblical grounds for divorce. Given the Christian church’s pressing need to provide hope and healing for victims of divorce, Christian academia must provide an assessment of Instone-Brewer’s controversial work. One aspect of this assessment involves Instone-Brewer’s treatment of Exodus 21:10-11, the text from which he derives two grounds for divorce: emotional and material neglect. Taking as its research pool exegetical commentaries published since Keil and Delitzsch’s 1891 Commentary of the Old …

The Roman Empire: The Defender Of Early First Century Christianity, John Toone Jan 2011

The Roman Empire: The Defender Of Early First Century Christianity, John Toone

Senior Honors Theses

All of the events, authors, and purposes of the books in the New Testament occurred under the reign of the Roman Empire (27 B.C.—A.D. 476). Therefore, an understanding of the Roman Empire is necessary for comprehending the historical context of the New Testament. In order to fully understand the impact of the Roman Empire on the New Testament, particularly before the destruction of the Jewish Temple in A.D. 70, Rome’s effect on religion (and the religious laws that governed its practice) must be examined. Contrary to expectations, the Roman Empire emerges from this examination as the protector (not persecutor) of …

From Luke To John: Lazarus, Mary, And Martha In The Fourth Gospel, Keith L. Yoder Dec 2010

From Luke To John: Lazarus, Mary, And Martha In The Fourth Gospel, Keith L. Yoder

Keith L. Yoder

Here I examine John’s Raising of Lazarus and Anointing of Jesus texts and explore literary parallels with Luke’s Lazarus and Mary/Martha texts. I show first that there is a significant and orderly array of such parallels between the Luke and John texts, constituting strong evidence of inter-textual influence between Luke and John. I then show that this relationship is literary rather than oral, and that the literary dependence flows from Luke to John. This paper was not accepted for presentation by the panel moderator.
NOTE of 2 July 2017: I will be revising this essay this year to take …
