A Study Of Some Lucan Parables In The Light Of Oriental Life And Poetic Style, Kenneth Ewing Bailey

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

Throughout the history of the church the parables of Jesus have received considerable attention from biblical interpreters. Yet the cultural milieu and the poetry of the parables are aspects of parabolic studies that have not been adequately treated. The culture reflected in the dominical parables is that of first century Palestine. Many scholars have paid no heed whatsoever to material from Israel's heritage which may be in Zechariah 7-8. Those who have made such studies have had either …

From our survey of the controversy over divine wrath in the history of theology it should be evident that we are not dealing with a matter of minor importance but one of great significance for the whole structure of theology and basic to our understanding of biblical teaching.

Shepherd, Sheep, And Goats; A Study In Old Testament Concepts And Imagery, Jack Ferguson Feb 1972

Shepherd, Sheep, And Goats; A Study In Old Testament Concepts And Imagery, Jack Ferguson

Master of Divinity Thesis

The problem which this paper is concerned with, therefore, has to do with the meaning of flock imagery when itis applied to the nation of Israel, especially when Israelis compared to a goat or to a mixed flock of sheep and goats. Consequently, it is my purpose: (a) to examine the nature and composition of the flocks in the Old Testament; (b) to place a new emphasis on the nature, value, and necessity of goats as members of a flock; (c) to demonstrate the fact and significance of the combined flock, especially when it becomes a phrase which refers to …
