The Meaning Of Telos In Romans 10:4, Robert Badenas Jan 1983

The Meaning Of Telos In Romans 10:4, Robert Badenas

Dissertations

This study attempts to resolve the ambiguity surrounding the meaning of ‘telos’ in Rom 10:4 and to provide philological criteria for the understanding of this term.

Chapter I indicates clearly that a considerable shift has occurred in the history of the interpretation of ‘telos’ in Rom 10:4. The early church and the Reformers understood this verse in a teleological/completive sense: as a statement of the fulfillment of the law in Christ in a prophetic as well as purposive signification. However, since the post-Reformation era and particularly since the nineteenth century the terminal/temporal/antinomian interpretations have prevailed. Rom 10:4 has been generally …

Poor And Rich In The Epistle Of James: A Socio-Historical And Exegetical Study, Pedrito U. Maynard-Reid Jan 1981

Poor And Rich In The Epistle Of James: A Socio-Historical And Exegetical Study, Pedrito U. Maynard-Reid

Dissertations

This investigation attempts to break further away from the parochialism in dealing with the Epistle of James--moving away from the purely literary and theological orientation, and paying more attention to the social milieu out of which the document arose and how the ethos of the community impinged upon the thought of the writer.

Socially oriented studies in NT scholarship are not new. Since the 1930s, however, this emphasis has been largely neglected until its recent revival. Chapter I shows that the greatest problem with social orientation in NT studies is finding a satisfactory method. The majority of scholars who are …

Figures Of Speech In Galatians, Jay Currie May 1979

Figures Of Speech In Galatians, Jay Currie

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The scope of this thesis will be limited to figures of words or expressions as defined by Terry and Robertson.17 We purposely omit so-called figures of thought (for example, allegory, simile, parallel) since these figures are usually covered adequately in many commentaries and because their inclusion would make this thesis needlessly lengthy.

Galatians As Dialogical Response To Opponents, Bernard Hungerford Brinsmead Jan 1979

Galatians As Dialogical Response To Opponents, Bernard Hungerford Brinsmead

Dissertations

This thesis seeks to discover the center of Galatians, its unique theological statement, by approaching the question from the perspective of the dialogical nature of the letter as a piece of literature, and the theology of the opponents with which it is dialogical. The context of a piece of literature is essential to its being understood. When a letter is as obviously disputative as is Galatians, a vital part of that context must be the opponents who have called it forth. The review of literature reveals that the identity of the opponents in Galatia remains "problematic." Two things in particular …

The Apocalyptic "Son Of Man" In Daniel 7, Arthur J. Ferch Jan 1979

The Apocalyptic "Son Of Man" In Daniel 7, Arthur J. Ferch

Dissertations

This investigation studies the identity and nature of the manlike figure in Dan 7:13-14 (hereafter referred to as SM). In the first chapter we reviewed the interpretations of the SM in Jewish and Christian literature since the beginning of the second century of our era and noted that with the exception of the seventeenth century study by Carpzov, discussion of the Danielic figure was limited to passing comments. Throughout this period the SM was interpreted mainly messianically or christologically. During the nineteenth century more substantial inquiries attempted to find answers to the identity and nature of the manlike being primarily …

The Literary Structure Of The Genesis Creation Story, Jacques Doukhan Jan 1978

The Literary Structure Of The Genesis Creation Story, Jacques Doukhan

Dissertations

Exegetical research on Gen 1 has been characterized since the 18th century essentially by a diachronic concern. Thus the Documentary hypothesis and the so-called Tatbericht-Wortbericht theory have been the two main starting points of any relevant scholarly study of this text. Recently, under the influence of contemporary literary studies, attention has been drawn to the validity of the synchronic approach, and more and more scholars have thus become aware of the importance of the liteary structure of this text. The latter has been dissociated from the thematic distribution of motifs; this tension has been explained in terms of different sources, …

Textual Parallels To The Doctrine And Covenants (Sections 65 To 133) As Found In The Bible, Lois Jean Smutz Jan 1971

Textual Parallels To The Doctrine And Covenants (Sections 65 To 133) As Found In The Bible, Lois Jean Smutz

Theses and Dissertations

This study has shown that there is a textual relationship between the Doctrine and Covenants and the King James Version of the Bible in that out of 1240 of the 1999 verses examined in Sections 65-133 of the Doctrine and Covenants there were found two paralleled Biblical phrases or clauses. Varying in subject matter, these clauses and phrases were either similar or verbatim parallels in vocabulary, syntax or meanings (denotations and connotations) and, many times, in concept.

In analyzing the location of the sources of the textual parallels, it was found that the New Testament is much more similar in …

The Book Of Mormon As An Instrument In Teaching The Historicity Of The New Testament Events Of Christ's Life, David R. Mangelson Jan 1969

The Book Of Mormon As An Instrument In Teaching The Historicity Of The New Testament Events Of Christ's Life, David R. Mangelson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to determine and present the Book of Mormon's contributions as a witness to the authenticity of the New Testament account of certain events of Christ's life, in order that teachers may have an effective instrument in teaching the historicity of the New Testament account of Christ's life.
This study reveals 177 passages in the Book of Mormon that refer to the life of Jesus. These passages corroborated the New Testament account of Christ's life. There are 61 Book of Mormon passages that refer to the pre-existence of Jesus Christ and His anticipated coming. There …

The Interpretation Of Romans 16:17-20 In Ecclesiology, Richard Kraemer Nov 1968

The Interpretation Of Romans 16:17-20 In Ecclesiology, Richard Kraemer

Bachelor of Divinity

In order to set limits of the kind required it is necessary first to examine the text to the best of one's exegetical ability to determine its meaning--and that in the context of the epistle of St. Paul to the Romans. It is equally important to examine- the way in which this text has been subsequently used in the history of the Christian Church. This, indeed, will constitute the bulk of this paper; for the exegetical traditions of interpretation of this passage have a direct bearing on the way it is currently interpreted and will henceforth be interpreted. This is …

The Use And Procedure Of Fraternal Admonition According To Matthew 16:15-17, Karl Schmidt May 1966

The Use And Procedure Of Fraternal Admonition According To Matthew 16:15-17, Karl Schmidt

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The basic purpose of this study of Matthew 18:15-17, as is the case with the valid study of any portion of Holy Scripture, is to determine the message which the Lord here speaks to His people today. More specifically, this study seeks to determine two things: (l) whether or not our Lord here lays down an explicit procedure for dealing with the sinning brother, and (2) whether this particular section of Scripture speaks only of personal relationships among Christians, or also of formal ecclesiastical discipline and excommunication.

An Approach To The Exegesis Of John 10:34-36, Richard Jungkuntz Oct 1964

An Approach To The Exegesis Of John 10:34-36, Richard Jungkuntz

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the interpretation of John 10:34-36 commentators have generally assumed that behind Jesus' words lies the intent by means of unanswerable formal argumentation to refute or at least to silence His opponents, the Pharisees, who have charged Him with blasphemy for claiming to be divine. A corollary of this assumption is the view that the statement "Scripture cannot be broken" means no more than "Scripture's statements are incontrovertible; if Scripture says something, that something is a fact." Acceptable as such a proposition in itself may be to Christian readers today, as well as to a Palestinian audience in Jesus' day, …

The Book Of Mormon As An Instrument In Teaching The Historicity Of Old Testament Events And Characters, Jerome C. Hainsworth Jan 1964

The Book Of Mormon As An Instrument In Teaching The Historicity Of Old Testament Events And Characters, Jerome C. Hainsworth

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to determine and present as completely as possible the Book of Mormon's contribution to the historicity of the Old Testament's events and characters in order that teachers may have another instrument for the effective direction of learning in Old Testament history. Therefore, it is the purpose of this study to determine and point out to the teacher the areas in which the Book of Mormon complements the Old Testament, and sustans its truthfulness as a historically accurate record.

It is the hypothesis of this study that the Book of Mormon has much to contribute …
