Perceptual Aspects Of Color, Douglas Brown Gillespie

The work in the thesis show, a series of colored grids on a gray ground began in the fall of 1977. An exploration of color and perception is of primary importance to the series. The grid is of secondary importance and was chosen to eliminate any design elements which might hinder the intended perceptual experience.

All the experiences and impressions of artists affect their work. Experiences gained by experimentation with media, environmental changes and intelligent visual growth often dictate the mode of communication. Part of my experiences have been the influence of the color, structure, and rythmic [sic] line in Indian cave frescoes. These frescoes, depicting scenes from the Jatak Tales, create an emotional and psychological impact; their sensuous movements breathe something of the warmth found in the Indian air. Their color, that of the earth, and their great linear emphasis have profoundly influenced me and are apparent in my paintings in the curves of …

The primary aim of this study was to investigate three types of parent communication--encouragement, praise, and discouragement--with regard to feelings elicited and perceived helpfulness, as reported by fifth- and sixth-grade subjects grouped according to high, medium, or low locus of control. Subjects for the study were 37 male and 47 female volunteers. Bialer•s Children•s Locus of Control Scale was used to classify males and females into a high (internal), medium (middle range), or low (external) group. Encouragement, praise, and discouragement were operationally defined as those responses receiving total agreement from a panel of experts as representing the Adlerian concepts under …
