Cartooning’s greatest strength is its simplicity. This essay argues that the cartoon’s inherent modesty and accessibility are central to its philosophical utility, and that its spare visual language conveys more than meets the eye. Drawing on phenomenology, it considers cartooning as a process grounded in the body, and it investigates the bodily encounter between the viewer and the cartoon. Through an analysis of cartooning work by Saul Steinberg, R.O. Blechman, and Liana Finck - a “family of cartoonists” - it demonstrates how a line-drawn, representational cartooning language can transform the act of looking into a participatory experience that interrogates issues …

This thesis explores the potential of archival and participatory practices to illuminate and disrupt societal barriers to genuine human connection, particularly those arising from productivity, routine, and capitalist notions of progress. Rooted in an extensive personal archive—over 70,000 photographs, hundreds of journal entries, and fragmented sensory experiences—my artistic process involves meticulously collecting, rearranging, and interpreting patterns within everyday consumption. Through iterative methods akin to artists such as Wolfgang Tillmans, I juxtapose images, texts, and found materials, embedding personal narratives and subjective insights to uncover deeper connections and overlooked truths.

Situated within a regressive political climate, this essay considers the writer’s thesis artwork Weep No More, My Lady as a simultaneous account of Southern gendered violence and a desire for healing. Through personal and historical connections to Kentucky’s material culture, the work navigates binaries of class, race, and gender that have dictated the dominant contemporary conception of the region. Reconciling life within a body defined by fragility, I create worlds of connectivity to embody and refigure Classical Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (cEDS)–a connective-tissue disorder causing hypermobile joints, fragile skin, easy bruising, and poor wound healing. Large-format oil paintings employ a multi-layer method, layering paint like skin to reform the body onto canvas. Drawing on Surrealist automatic processes and theories of unconscious production, my methodology combines intuitive, process-based mark-making with traditional oil painting techniques and experimental material practices to subvert and reassert artistic agency, weaving between control and surrender. My interdisciplinary art practice investigates wearable sculpture as a tool for emotional processing, identity negotiation, and embodied performance. Beginning with early works like a cape made from thrifted scarves—exploring how different wearers transform the same garment—I have expanded their role into vehicles for personal and collective meaning. Drawing from the work of artists including Nick Cave, Stan Brahkage, Lucy McRae, Lucy Orta, and Rebecca Horn, I examine how bodily concealment, distortion, and constraint can foster new modes of self-discovery.

This is a shame, as I believed (and still do believe) the series has a lot to offer in terms of research. For this paper, I analyzed Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, a Switch remake of the Wii game Kirby's Return to Dream Land. I analyzed the cutscenes found within the game using fantasy theme criticism. Museum patrons often felt disgust and awe after I would tell them what the intricate wreaths in front of them were made of when I gave tours at the Crow Wing County Historical Society. Hair art was popular in the United States and Britain in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with its peak occurring between the 1860s and 1900.1 Despite its popularity, it is not often discussed at length in fields that study Victorian artwork or bodily artwork. Michael Pawlyn, in Biomimicry in Architecture, coined “biomechanical designs” to describe structural techniques derived from creatures. This study investigates chitin-based creatures. Crustaceans, insects, and microscopic organisms all have exoskeletons in nature. With a focus on crabs, other crustaceans and bugs, this study examines and evaluates the formal characteristics of chitin-based organisms. Through an exploration of his firsthand experiences in Japan, Régamey emerges as a multifaceted and paradoxical figure—an artist, educator, and author—whose pursuits reshaped the narrative of Japanese art and cultural exchange in France amid the fervor of Japonisme. This thesis explores the dynamic interplay between consciousness and unconsciousness and how this relationship influences visual language in my art practice. This research explored themes of connection and belonging in SGM clients in individual art therapy sessions through the medium of collage. An arts-based research method was developed utilizing the medium of collage in session with clients, followed with reflective response collages and journaling to analyze the data observed. Across 5 art therapy sessions, clients engaging in collage facilitated deeper therapeutic rapport and safety, enhanced a sense of connection with the self, and helped to process barriers and desires around clients’ close relationships.

Wrote a research paper on the history, careers, and future of medical illustration. I created twelve drawings total, six of the musculature of the human face and six of an enlarged human heart. I worked hands-on with a real human heart in the cadaver lab and used a human face model for reference in my drawings. The human face drawings were drawn from the anterior and lateral views. The human heart drawings were drawn from the anterior and cross-sectional views.
