George Tooker: Painting and Working Drawings 1947-1988

September 6 to September 27, 1989

Marsh Art Gallery

Introduction

Paintings such as Subway, 1950, and Ward, 1970-71, are unforgettable images of the numbing isolation and anonymity that George Tooker finds in our secular bureaucratic society. What lies behind these compelling images? The larger context of private and public themes offers us insight into Tooker's achievement. I would like to propose that at least a part of this achievement lies in his simultaneous use and dismissal of the traditional, that is Renaissance-based, perspective construction of pictorial space.

While studying at the …

Face To Face, Daphne A. Deeds, Karen Janovy

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

Among the various types of artistic expression, portraits are probably considered the most approachable by the greatest number of people. And yet, upon closer consideration, it is evident that no amount of scrutiny on the part of the artist, or the viewer, can deliver the portrait from a fundamental limbo resulting from its dual referential and aesthetic functions. The portrait partakes of a variety of truths, but never resides within anyone verity. The philosophical debate about the nature of likeness has raged since the time of Plato, and remains unresolved.

The motivations and limitations of portraiture have changed over the …

Dragons, Blossoms, Sunbursts: Textile Arts Of The Caucasus, Carol Bier Jan 1989

Dragons, Blossoms, Sunbursts: Textile Arts Of The Caucasus, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

Rugs from the Caucasus have long been appreciated in Europe and America. Widely known for their bright colors and bold designs, Caucasian rugs have attracted collectors for nearly a century. These rugs, produced in towns and villages, reflect regional design traditions which were amalgamated from diverse sources.

Although embroideries and flatweaves (rugs without pile) from the Caucasus are less well known in the West, their designs are no less bold nor their colors less striking. Produced as a domestic art, they were destined for home use and local commerce. The richness of patterns in these textile arts is in part …

Francis Cunningham: Painting and Drawing

March 14 to April 5, 1989

Marsh Art Gallery

Introduction

Realism is an attitude toward life that affirms the beauty and significance of the visible world. Realism starts outside with the surfaces of things and travels inward to their meaning. Everything in this process has to do with selection. What has the object told a particular artist about itself, about its relationship to other objects and to the surrounding space?

In life one takes in things at a glance, but the artist looks at an object for hours, weeks, months, even years. Premier coup painting …

The Evolution Of Style, Mary Hall Spangler Jan 1989

The Evolution Of Style, Mary Hall Spangler

Theses

Mary Hall Spangler’s The Evolution of Style explores the development of her unique artistic vision as the culmination of graduate studies in studio art at Lindenwood College. The accompanying exhibition features thirty-five works spanning various media, including acrylic, oil, pastel, pencil, silkscreen, and relief prints. Spangler reflects on the deliberate and intuitive processes that shape an artist’s style, emphasizing the importance of subject selection, composition, color theory, and media experimentation. Her work draws inspiration from both historical influences, such as Corot and Cézanne, and contemporary practices, particularly in color orchestration and design.

Central to the thesis is the pursuit of …

The following supporting objectives were established:

(1) To identify areas of agreement and disagreement as perceived by manufacturers and educators concerning: (a) current and future demand for skilled workers, management, and sales personnel, (b) comparison of those current and future demands, and …
