Reciprocating Transformations, Joyce A. Bryerton Jan 1991

Reciprocating Transformations, Joyce A. Bryerton

Dissertations and Theses

The paintings in this thesis project began with a study of various representational images, both personal and symbolic. It included the exploration of assorted media and different styles of execution in a search for imagery to represent the scope of my life experience. This search involved a method of working that excluded preconceived images. The original images evolved into an abstract state which alludes directly to the figurative and organic nature of the earlier work.

The Eternal Horizon: Landscapes From The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, Daphne A. Deeds Jan 1991

The Eternal Horizon: Landscapes From The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, Daphne A. Deeds

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

It is significant that the earliest recorded historical documentation of landscape, as such, occurred in the same quarter century as the Europeans' discovery of the New World. In 1494 the German painter and printmaker, Albrecht Durer, produced watercolor landscapes, probably on site, in single sittings. Even though Renaissance characteristics such as new techniques in the handling of light, atmospheric perspective and space are present in his work, Durer's watercolor sketches of pure landscapes did not influence the art of his time. It was another German, Albrecht Altdorfer, who "is credited with the first pure landscapes--both in painting and in prints. …

Beyond The Pyramids: Geometry And Design In The Carpets Of Egypt, 1450-1750, Carol Bier Jan 1991

Beyond The Pyramids: Geometry And Design In The Carpets Of Egypt, 1450-1750, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

Mamluk carpets present a paradox. For although they are among the most tantalizingly beautiful of all Oriental carpets, they are also the least understood. The answers to such questions as who made them, why they were made and for whom, and how they were used, are virtually unknown. These carpets, produced during the rule of the Mamluk sultans in Egypt in the late 15th century are arguably the finest ever produced anywhere. Mamluk carpets are distinguished from all other carpet-weaving traditions. In part, this distinction derives from the dominance and simplicity of geometric form (#R34.32.1): squares and rectangles, octagons and …

Growth Of An Artist, Fu-Hsin Luan Jan 1991

Growth Of An Artist, Fu-Hsin Luan

Theses

The works in this exhibition were selected from works completed over the past year . Examples included oil paintings and photographs. The exhibition consists of seventeen works - ten oil paintings and seven photographs. The inspiration for the theme was from ordinary life. I tried to experiment with different expressions and techniques in the subject matter of the exhibition.

The oil paintings portray landscapes in a traditional manner and abstraction with a strong overall emphasis on rich color schemes and value contrast.

The seven photographs were to appear simple and quiet. I have done some photography before entering graduate work. …

Art As Therapy And Meditation, Julia Ann Harmon Tilden Jan 1991

Art As Therapy And Meditation, Julia Ann Harmon Tilden

Theses

Art as Therapy and Meditation by Julia Ann Harmon Tilden explores the therapeutic and meditative qualities of art through a deeply personal and experimental journey during her graduate studies at Lindenwood College. The thesis documents a year marked by personal loss, during which the author turned to her creative practice as a source of emotional healing and introspection. Through a combination of drawing, painting, mixed media, and three-dimensional work, Tilden investigates how art-making can foster emotional expression, spiritual reflection, and psychological relief.

The body of work presented in this thesis includes pastel drawings, abstract paintings, collages, sculptural canvases, and illuminated …

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the study, was to determine the importance of identified duties to the career success of a newly hired design/drafting employee aspiring to become a supervisor or manager as perceived by design/drafting managers and university professors. An opinionnaire was developed which consisted of 141 tasks which were grouped into 13 general duties. The 13 duties represented the job functions for design/drafting managers. The opinionnaire was validated utilizing a jury of experts consisting of eight design/drafting managers and five university professors. It was then mailed to the membership of the American Design Drafting Association (ADDA) who identified themselves as …

[Introduction To] Writing The Woman Artist: Essays On Poetics, Politics, And Portraiture, Suzanne W. Jones Jan 1991

[Introduction To] Writing The Woman Artist: Essays On Poetics, Politics, And Portraiture, Suzanne W. Jones

Bookshelf

The essays in this collection explore the many ways in which women writers have seen and dreamed the woman artist as a character in their works. In describing this character, her struggles and her visions, we as feminist critics run the risk of prescribing her, and yet failing to name her means failing to know her. We confront this difficulty not by defining the woman artist figure but by identifying many. Recognizing as Teresa De Lauretis has suggested that the social construction of gender is "a common denominator" among women, we examine the different representations of the woman artist figure …

Introduction

For painter Laura Shechter the subject of still life is one that is charged with deep significance. Since the 1970s she has explored the manifold complexities of form and idea it necessarily involves for her with considerable success. As one of this country's leading interpreters of still life's revelatory aspects, Shechter has specialized in bringing out the subject's rich potentials for meditative and symbolic statement with a refreshing directness that is distinctively American in the emphasis on the special illuminating role played by …

Basic Paper Treatments For Printed Book Materials, Peter D. Verheyen Jan 1991

Basic Paper Treatments For Printed Book Materials, Peter D. Verheyen

Librarian Publications

In October of 1989, at the Guild of Book Workers' Standards of Excellence Seminar, Betsy Palmer Eldridge gave a presentation on "Basic Paper Treatments for Printed Book Materials." This 2 1/2 hour presentation was a very ambitious undertaking, but she did a magnificent job.

Since these presentations and the synopses that later appeared in the GBW Newsletter, there has been some discussion. The presentations and these articles are not to be construed as a "how to" of basic paper conservation but rather as an introduction for those with interest but little experience. For the more experienced, they present the methods …
