Nexus is a magazine that began as an insert in the Wright State Guardian student newspaper in 1965 and has since been published semi-regularly. It began only accepting creative writing, but has since expanded to include illustrations, photography and other non-written art forms. Today, it is published in a digital format and accepts submissions from around the country, though it maintains its commitment to the Wright State Community.

Introduction

This ukiyo-e exhibition reveals the tantalizing range of images in Japanese prints of the floating world. A seventeenth-century Japanese writer described that world as: "singing songs, drinking wine, and diverting ourselves just in floating, floating ... like a gourd with the river current." Reflecting a sense of the world as an ephemeral place of no lasting value, the floating world was an escape from the present into fantasy and pleasure. Review of: The Mediation of Ornament, by OLEG GRABAR & Problems of Style: Foundations for a History of Ornament, by ALOIS RIEGL.

TWO MAJOR WORKS addressing the nature of art, published in the same year but written a century apart, are each based, in part, upon analyses of Islamic monuments. This paper is the end product of an Independent Learning Project under the direction of Helen Rolfson, 0.S.F. at Saint John's University, School of Theology, Collegeville, Minnesota, which investigated the spirituality of liturgical art in the Roman Catholic tradition. The particular focus of research was on the use of abstract art and iconoclasm within the tradition and in general theory. The paper presents the author's theory of contemporary liturgical art for the Roman Catholic Church in the West based upon his findings.
