While the words of figurative art and abstract expressionism may seem to be eons apart for the average viewer, it was the premise of "Figuration/Abstraction: Fairfield Porter/Willem de Kooning" to explore, in the worlds of curator David Leach, "a shared attitude regarding the essentials of image making." In the collision of realism and abstraction which highlighted a long period of East Coast painting characterized by these two major figures. Leach has seen a love of color and "a strong interest in shape" as well as "a love for the fast-moving gestural mark."

A look at the effects virtual reality has on users. These effects can manifest physiologically or psychologically, through the use of the interfaces and feedback of virtual tech. Several sources are discussed, including a study from the University of Virginia’s Department of Computer Science and a panel presentation attended by the author titled "A National Research Agenda for Virtual Reality: Report by the National Research Council Committee on VR R&D" (NRCC). The first is the Nanomanipulator, developed at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Department of Computer Science in conjunction with the UCLA Department of Chemistry in 1991. It seems that the world does not exist in the way that we perceive it. Among the reasons for this are both the inaccuracy of the information gathered by our senses, and the cultural and linguistic structures through which we interpret this sensory information. This thesis and this group of sculptures, exhibited in the Autzen Gallery April 17 - May 10, 1995, are an attempt to address these issues and to point in a direction which may lead to greater understanding of the world and our place within it.
