The Freud-Lissitzky Navigator Text, Lev Manovich Jul 1999

The Freud-Lissitzky Navigator Text, Lev Manovich

SWITCH

Leo Manovich explores the development of the simulation project called, "The Freud-Lissitzky Navigator". Manovich first introduces Sigmund Feud during the year 1928, where Freud met with the Russian designer El Lissitzky to talk about psychoanalysis and modern architecture. During their discussion, they created the Interpretation of Dreams, Freud’s model of the concious/unconciousness. Around this time, Russian filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein wanted to create a film adaptation of Marx’s Capital, which later became his idea of “displacing” Capital in the Interpretation of Dreams. Essentially, Freud and Lissitzky was convinced to commission Eisenstein to creat a walkthrough of the model of a house. …

Cracking The Maze Online Exhibit: Game Plug-Ins And Patches As Hacker Art, Anne-Marie Schleiner Jul 1999

Cracking The Maze Online Exhibit: Game Plug-Ins And Patches As Hacker Art, Anne-Marie Schleiner

SWITCH

The article discusses game patches that are produced by programmers or game companies that can be used as a marketing tool. Unlike ordinary software patches, game patches don't correct code behind the scenes, it is deeply embedded in the host system and commercial computer games. Sonya Roberts' patch, for example, skims the surface of the game, while Jason Huddy's patch for "Los Disneys" uses the game engine without the content, creating a new game of the hacker's own devising. These game patches can go deep like making female skins into muscled male fixtures and can come up with a new …

The Sculpture Of Presence, Michael William Schmunk Jun 1999

The Sculpture Of Presence, Michael William Schmunk

Dissertations and Theses

My work was presented in the Autzen gallery. It consisted of seven individual sculptures. The materials used in the sculptures were steel and wood. The sculptures were placed in the gallery with regard to their spacing to each other and the walls, the effect of their reflections on the floor, and the utilization of the architecture (one leaned against the wall, another leaned on the cement windowsill). The gallery lighting was manipulated to create shadows that gave additional affect to the sculptures. The particular manner of presentation heightened each sculpture's effect of expressing a psychological presence to the viewer by …

When There Will Be Great Women Artists, Anne M. Stanton Jun 1999

When There Will Be Great Women Artists, Anne M. Stanton

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

Linda Nochim has posed the question why there are no great women artists? (Nochim 1988) While this question can be challenged as a issue of perspective, I attempt to address it as an actual phenomenon. What is it that limits the productivity of women in art? Historically, women in the modem industrialized world have been objectified and stereotyped, and I will present a brief overview that discusses the definition of woman in this context (Bohan 1993, West and Zimmerman 1987, Hare-Mustin and Marecek 1990), and also demonstrate this view has saturated society. As a first step to change, women must …

Law And Order, Abuse Of Power: A Study In Light And Shadow, Daniel J. Shea May 1999

Law And Order, Abuse Of Power: A Study In Light And Shadow, Daniel J. Shea

Dissertations and Theses

In this installation piece, I am creating an environment, a stage if you will, to inform viewers through visual images, shadows and projections, to bear witness to an injustice through the machinations of the state. Philosophically and metaphorically, the piece is a walk through Plato's cave in search of the truth of things formerly perceived as shadows; it is also an allusion to illusions that are both transparent and opaque. It is a critique of "justice" and the administration thereof. There are elements of two and three dimensions employing drawing, painting, etching, photography, sound and a video projection. Materials include …

New Deal Murals In Kentucky Post Offices., Eileen Toutant May 1999

New Deal Murals In Kentucky Post Offices., Eileen Toutant

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation takes a primarily art historical approach to the murals commissioned from 1934 to 1943 under President Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration. This study is confined to the post office murals created for the Commonwealth of Kentucky under the United states Treasury Department's Section of Fine Arts. Many of these paintings were lost or deliberately destroyed when the program was dismantled. Today most of the remaining murals are dirty and· faded and little noticed. Many of the artists have been forgotten. During the Depression years, however, these paintings contributed to local pride, optimism for the future, stronger patriotism, and a …

An Interview With Claude Guillemot, Samantha Mach Apr 1999

An Interview With Claude Guillemot, Samantha Mach

SWITCH

This interview with Claude Guillemot, a French video game developer and publisher, talks about his website and some of the issues surrounding it today. Guillemot also mentioned CD-ROM and the web at the time when DOTCOM started to boom in the years 1998 - 2000. He uses the web to create synthetic artworks and talks about how artworks cannot be objective, the same way scientists such as archeologists are not really objective. In his responses to Switch Staff, Guillemot explains scientists and artists do not form a bias in their works and do not favor one side or another. By …

An Interview With Sandy Stone, Geri Wittig

SWITCH

Technology is taking away the importance and credibility from books. As long as the industry still stands, so does the university for credible sources, even though more people rely on technology, including the world wide web, to get information. Due to rapid increase in quick interactions through the web, people that converse through actions quickly cannot go back and undo their problems. There are more people in one country of Europe that pays more attention to the arts than the entire country of the United States. The reason why Sandy Stone is more fascinated by Europe than America is because …
