The Illusion Of Art: My Amalgamation Of Illustration And Contemporary Art, Victor Davila
The Illusion Of Art: My Amalgamation Of Illustration And Contemporary Art, Victor Davila
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Drawing on archetypical aspects of human characteristics and personalities, I create images that illustrate our connection to memory, media, and culture. My work is informed by pop culture, including television, movies, cartoons and comic books as it relates to characters in our own physical world and society. The grid is used to represent both childhood games and the frames of a comic strip, where each panel equals an exact moment of time.
Adaptive Technomythography: The Apotheosis Of Machine And Development Of Legend In A System Of Dynamic Technology, Roger Wolf
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Human beings will effectively deify any suitably complex system that cannot be explained through basic haptic interaction. Our culture loves technology. These days it seems we need it to feel whole. In an effort to explore the development of mythology and modular aesthetic in a technological age I have designed and constructed a number of interactive robotic 'organisms' to engage in arbitrary movement in geometric enclosures. Through observation and dialog I seek to assess the extent to which people assign human characteristics to the random and oft times aberrant mechanical behavior. To supplement this endeavor, a fictional astrological system that …
Truths, Realities And The Easily Transmitted Image, Elizabeth Walton
Truths, Realities And The Easily Transmitted Image, Elizabeth Walton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
By the documenting and examining things that are often overlooked in everyday life, I try to find the beauty of these objects, of people, their lives and their homes. I am interested in the current technology and the influence of the easily transmitted image. What is the truth and reality of the images shared by the current youth culture because of the use of camera phones, digital image takers, and the constant image transmissions through online social networking venues such as My Space and FaceBook? The current digital image is no longer a precious object as it was in the …
Our Terrain: How Art Reflects This Historical Dichotomy In Imagery, Meredith Davidson
Our Terrain: How Art Reflects This Historical Dichotomy In Imagery, Meredith Davidson
Whittier Scholars Program
This project is divided into three sections. The first and largest section is an essay about the paradoxical view that Americans have of nature. It explores how art reflects the dichotomy between conservation and exploitation. The essay investigates the historical foundations of this paradox through 19th century landscape painting. It then covers two 20th century art movements, Regional Photography and Earthworks, to reinvestigate the dualistic American outlook. The essay concludes by examining a select group of artists whose work investigates land use and land conservation in modern-day America. The second section is a detailed account of the process of curating …

Described in this article is the Second Life Archetype project, in which artists used Second Life as a platform to explore identity through the lens of archetypes: the comic book guy, the shaman, and the gamer. Each group used strategies to locate, map, and analyze how these archetypes manifest in Second Life.
Bright Lights On Quiet Streets: Tom Keough’S Nocturnes, Shannon Egan
Bright Lights On Quiet Streets: Tom Keough’S Nocturnes, Shannon Egan
Art and Art History Faculty Publications
The well-kept city streets lined with trees and old brownstones may seem familiar in the paintings of Brooklyn-based artist Tom Keough, but the neighborhood is disquietingly empty. Keough situates the sidewalk in the immediate foreground of his paintings and compels the viewer to enter into an eerily vacant scene. With few exceptions, Keough leaves the always still and sometimes snowy New York setting largely unoccupied. Nonetheless, Keough conveys human presence in his paintings with the soft glow of lamplight from windows, footprints in the snow, and cars parked along the side. The theme of urban alienation—a paradoxical sense of loneliness …

Techno-Art Of Selariu Supermathematics Functions, Florentin Smarandache
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
In this album we include the so called Super-Mathematics functions (SMF), which constitute the base for, most often, generating, technical, neo-geometrical objects, therefore less artistic. These functions are the results of 38 years of research, which began at University of Stuttgart in 1969. Since then, 42 related works have been published, written by over 19 authors, as shown in the References. The name was given by the regretted mathematician Professor Emeritus Doctor Engineer Gheorghe Silas who, at the presentation of the very first work in this domain, during the First National Conference of Vibrations in Machine Constructions, Timişoara, Romania, 1978, …

Mon Voyage: Paris Through My Eyes, Kristyn Ann Beckman
Honors Program Theses
The topic of MON VOYAGE: Paris Through My Eyes is a journey and exploration of culture. In my years at the University of Northern Iowa studying graphic design, I have always been interested in how my art can interpret my insights into my own world. While exploring this idea of art as interpretation, I began considering my own culture and my lack of knowledge of other cultures. Thus began the dream of traveling into a new culture and documenting the experience through my subconscious vision. I wanted to document a culture not as a tourist but as someone studying a …

Beyond Narrative, Jacob Adam Joseph Dodd
Beyond Narrative, Jacob Adam Joseph Dodd
Theses and Dissertations
My graduate film at Virginia Commonwealth University, "Nunna Mia e la Barca," explores the traditions behind narrative and documentary film construction. With this project, my goal was to blend narrative story telling techniques - for example continuity editing - with that of documentary approaches in order to communicate the story of my Italian grandmother, Nunna, and her journey on the Andrea Doria in 1956. These documentary approaches focus more on the specific details of Nunna's American home as I have experienced them growing up. Everything in the motion picture frame has been lit, composed, rehearsed, and edited as in any …

Toward A New Kinship Constellation, Nellie Helen Frances Appleby
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis attempts to elaborate on my artwork during my graduate studies, while contextualizing it within the framework of the art world and the works of other artists. A main project during this time was to minimize the singular interpretation and framing of a fine art photographic print, while expanding its possibilities of meaning through the addition of important ephemera and objects such as plants, drawings, moving imagery, conversation and the unknown.

The human condition in the post-modern world is increasingly nomadic. A sense of displacement and alienation is pervasive. Schools emphasize abstracted knowledge removed from the experience of students. Many people feel detached from the places where they live and have no particular sense of belonging or responsibility toward their communities. Museums can counter this pervasive restlessness and be a powerful source of community renewal. This article draws connections between place-based education theory and the educational mission of the art museum, as illustrated by the Springville Museum of Art. The small town of Springville, Utah enjoys an unparalleled connection with its …
