Designing An Attraction: A Hans On Approach To Themed Entertainment And Attraction Design, Matthew Estevez

Whittier Scholars Program

My senior project is a combination of my skills that I acquired in Art, Literature, Theatre. The Project uses these skills in oder to create a theme park attraction from the beginning for the final floor plans and rendering. A large portion of the project is the renderings. These rednerins will be made with water color as the primary medium. The purpose of this project is to illustrate how the difference disciplines come together to create an attraction for a theme park. It is also intended to be a hands on approach at creating a theme park attraction. Using the …

Bottom Creek, Bent Mountain, Va, Genesis Chapman Jan 2010

Bottom Creek, Bent Mountain, Va, Genesis Chapman

Theses and Dissertations

The title of this thesis Bottom Creek, Bent Mountain, VA is the subject of my large ink drawings. Starting with the spring outside my window, this book describes the creeks as it flows across the mountain that I grew up on. My drawings document the experience of walking along the banks of Bottom Creek as it flows past farms fields and along the roadside. Described as a seemingly insignificant place, the creek is in fact it is one of the most basic, and important parts of this mountain’s landscape, because the creek’s natural process it is responsible for producing the …

Effectiveness Of Catalog Printing On Online Consumers, Sarah Chan Jan 2010

Effectiveness Of Catalog Printing On Online Consumers, Sarah Chan

Graphic Communication

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate how catalog printing could still have a significant impact on the behavior of online shoppers. It is a common trend in companies to use print catalog as more of a branding vehicle than a selling tool. Often, print catalogs are an essential tool in reinforcing a company’s brand image. Using catalog printing could potentially enhance company brand image and extend services and products being offered to consumers and prospective clients.

Librarian Publications

For those involved with bookbinding, book conservation, or with the Guild of Book Workers, Don Etherington needs no introduction – he has served as a teacher, mentor, and friend. Now, with Bookbinding & Conservation: A Sixty-year Odyssey of Art and Craft we can read about how he came to enter this field, was influenced by his teachers and mentors, and how he helped shape the world of bookbinding and conservation.

"Bookbinding & Conservation: A Sixty-year Odyssey of Art and Craft" contains a forward by Bernard Middleton, another leader in the field, and one who needs little introduction himself. It is …

Parallel Starts Outsider Art Inside Collections, Sharon L. Kennedy Jan 2010

Parallel Starts Outsider Art Inside Collections, Sharon L. Kennedy

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

As the term implies, "outsider" artists tend to work in isolation with little interest in other artists' styles or methods. Such independence from the social and cultural norms that have shaped art history provides scholars with few clues from which to proceed.

Norman Geske, Sheldon Director Emeritus and exhibition curator, defines outsider art as follows:

Essentially, outsider art is the art that derives from the creative instinct, which is inherent in human beings who are entirely independent of any of the conventions of traditional art history. In these, works, subject matter, method, and technique are subsumed in the intrinsic impulse …

Structure And Properties Of Cocoons And Silk Fibers Produced By Hyalophora Cecropia, Narendra Reddy, Yiqi Yang Jan 2010

Structure And Properties Of Cocoons And Silk Fibers Produced By Hyalophora Cecropia, Narendra Reddy, Yiqi Yang

Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications

This paper shows that silk fibers produced by cecropia (Hyalophora cecropia) have similar tensile properties but different amino acid composition than that of mulberry (Bombyx mori) silk. The cecropia fibers are also much finer and have better strength and modulus than tasar silk, the most common non-mulberry silk. Cecropia is one of the largest silk producing moths and has similar lifecycle to that of mulberry silk but is easier to grow and produces larger cocoons than mulberry silk. In this study, we have characterized the composition, morphology, physical and tensile properties, and thermal behavior of the …

Developing Water Stable Gliadin Films Without Using Crosslinking Agents, Narendra Reddy, Yiqi Yang Jan 2010

Developing Water Stable Gliadin Films Without Using Crosslinking Agents, Narendra Reddy, Yiqi Yang

Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications

Abstract For the first time, gliadin films with excellent strength and water stability have been developed without using any crosslinking agents. So far, it has not been possible to obtain water stable gliadin films even after crosslinking. In this research, a novel method of using aqueous urea and ethanol has been developed to obtain highly water stable gliadin films without using crosslinking chemicals. The effects of concentrations of gliadin, urea and ethanol on the strength of the films and the stability of the films in water at high temperatures and various pH conditions has been studied. Gliadin films developed in …
