Theses and Dissertations
Where similarities in class struggle have historically operated as a unifying force globally, the American crafted mythos isolates the individual and dehumanizes those that do not fall within the parameters of the cowboy archetype. The national protagonist is turned into a class traitor and an extension of government power.
Zero Waste Design Exploration, Rosemarie Soma
Zero Waste Design Exploration, Rosemarie Soma
Honors Theses
This creative project encompasses the creation of four zero-waste garments. Zero waste design is a technique which involves designing in a way that produces little to no byproduct. The intent of this project was to create garments that are functional, marketable, and contribute to the sustainable fashion movement.
There is currently a serious push in the fashion industry for brands to contribute to a circular economy. This can be done in a multitude of ways: upcycling, recycling, using natural textiles, or utilizing zero waste design. Textile waste is one of the most important issues regarding the fashion industry. There are …
Metamorphosis: An Exploration Of Transformation In Artmaking, Scarlet Sevits
Metamorphosis: An Exploration Of Transformation In Artmaking, Scarlet Sevits
Honors Projects
My creative project begins with wanting to know how the art making process relates to the process of metamorphosis and the extent to which this process can achieve realism. To explore this question, I chose related subject matter that is the female mythological figures of Ovid’s epic poem Metamorphoses who undergo transformation of the human body. I also chose a methodology that relates to my question. The acts of painting and writing can be explored as processes of transformation and both processes attempt to convince the viewer or reader of reality: the reality of a living figure or the emotional …

Media, Marketing, And More – How Social Technology Is Changing The Face Of Small Business, Lily Reynolds
Honors Theses
The purpose of this study is to identify the ways in which social media and marketing technology advances are affecting small retail businesses. A total of three interviews were conducted with working professionals in different areas along the fashion supply chain, and were contacted based on common acquaintances. Each interview was conducted over the phone, and lasted between ten minutes and half an hour, with guided and supplemental questions focusing on their experiences with technology in their fields. The results showed that each area was affected in numerous ways, from superficial business changes to advancements at the cores of their …

Acid Catalyzed Small Ring Alcohols And Alkenes: An Artistic Approach To Visualizing Relationships Between Features Produced By Uv-Visible Spectra, Madeleine Ware
Campus Research Month
Madeleine Ware
Research Description
Campus Research Day
My physical organic chemistry research was supervised by Dr. Mitch Menzmer who studies the formation of carbocation intermediates in acid-catalyzed reactions of alkylated and non-alkylated small ring alcohols. The goal of my work was to compile data and develop methods to search for relationships between the initial structures of molecules analyzed and the wavelengths of maximum absorbance for features observed within a given spectrum. In addition, my advisor from the School of Visual Art and Design, Associate Professor Marc Boyson, contributed to this process by providing insights about the way information could be …

Life Repurposed: Finding A New Calling Through Meaningful Occupation, Jennifer K. Fortuna
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Kelly Allen, an occupational therapist and artist based in Grand Rapids, MI, provided the cover art for the Spring 2021 edition of the Open Journal of Occupational Therapy (OJOT). “Follow” is a 16” x 20” painting made from oil on panel. The painting, which features a coati from Central America, is from Kelly’s Animal Totem series. After more than 2 decades as a fine artist and educator, she began searching for a career change. Kelly’s background in fine art and her desire to help others prepared her for a career in occupational therapy. Certain events in Kelly’s life aligned not …
Understanding Spaces Of Abandonment Through Virtual Frameworks In Landscape Architecture, Aus Perez
Understanding Spaces Of Abandonment Through Virtual Frameworks In Landscape Architecture, Aus Perez
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
In recent years, design professionals have implemented many contemporary landscape architecture projects across the United States. With a primary goal of returning nature to urban environments, contemporary landscape architects and other transdisciplinary partners work diligently to sculpt physical spaces that reflect the human-living experience. However, a leap into the world of video game design could allow landscape architects and urban planners to more freely create virtual social environments to address rising issues of abandonment in today’s urban and rural spaces. Video game mechanics and methodologies can be used extensively in the disciplines of design that value participatory processes, like landscape …
