On Visual Art And Camouflage, Roy R. Behrens Jan 1978

On Visual Art And Camouflage, Roy R. Behrens

Faculty Publications

In a number of books on visual fine art and design [1, 2], there is mention of the kinship between camouflage and painting, but no one has, to my knowledge, pursued it. I have intermittently researched this relationship for several years, and my initial observations have recently been published [3]. Now I have been awarded a faculty research grant from the Graduate School of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to pursue this subject in depth. I am, therefore, collecting documents and personal accounts pertaining to historical and theoretical connections of the kind that are listed below.

Investigations On The Altered Plane As A Creative Element In The Visual Arts, Stephen J.T. Powell Jan 1978

Investigations On The Altered Plane As A Creative Element In The Visual Arts, Stephen J.T. Powell

Masters Theses

This is primarily a report of personal investigation by the author though some relevant references are used.

The work is divided into two parts representing two conceptions of the altered image bearing plane.

Essential to both conceptions is the use of the image bearing plane for its creative potential, rather than as a passive image support.

The modulated plane as image producer is discussed in part one with reference to its use for literal imagery and self derived imagery. Also mentioned are related printmaking, papermaking, plastic forming, and additive low relief techniques.

Part two deals with spatially related planes as …

Cone 5 - 6 Crystalline Glazes, Barry W. Kishpaugh Jan 1978

Cone 5 - 6 Crystalline Glazes, Barry W. Kishpaugh

Masters Theses

The purpose for this research was to develop cone 5-6 crystalline glazes which will provide the potter with well-formed and large-sized crystals.

This firing range was selected for two reasons. First, very little information is available on crystalline glazes at this temperature range; and secondly, an attempt at conserving energy is being made by firing at this lower temperature.

Data obtained through this crystal research was gained via a series of 10 test firings. The kiln used for the testings and developing of the firing schedule for the Cones 5-6 crystal glazes was a Unique Kilns Model 2430, having a …

Clothing Of Pioneer Women Of Dakota Territory, 1861-1889, Joyce Marie Larson Jan 1978

Clothing Of Pioneer Women Of Dakota Territory, 1861-1889, Joyce Marie Larson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hard-times of the Dakota Territory demanding strenuous physical labor compelled the investigator to study the clothing and dressmaking needs of pioneer women 1861-1889. This historical study of costume provides an insight into the life styles [sic] and the role of pioneer women as they interpreted clothing into their physical and utilitarian needs in adapting to the new frontier. The purpose of this research was to study the costume of the American women who resided in the Dakota Territory prior to the statehood of South Dakota, November 2, 1889. During the period 1861-1889, the Missouri River served as a geographical barrier …

Personal Experimentation In Drawing, Bennie L. Drake Jr. Jan 1978

Personal Experimentation In Drawing, Bennie L. Drake Jr.

Masters Theses

In order to have a true understanding of art there must first be some knowledge of the development as well as of the artist himself. The artist and his work are one but must be looked at from different angles; beginning with the work itself and realizing that the artist creates to satisfy some need or desire which stems from some religious or social beliefs.

When doing comparative resource study, I attemped to combine the drawing skills of extablished artist; such as Walter Campbell, Herbert Railton, Willy Pogany and Aubrey Breadsley in order to improve and express my inner thoughts. …

One Artist’S Experimental Approach To Sculpture, John J. Smith Iv Jan 1978

One Artist’S Experimental Approach To Sculpture, John J. Smith Iv

Masters Theses

This paper is intended to reflect the creative sensibilities of one artist-scientist as he experiments with media and his perceptions of nature as an approach to growth. His philosophy revolves around the relationship of his experience, his natural instinctive sensibilities, their affection upon his intuition, and the resulting creative process. The stimuli for the process are found in the natural realm around him whether perceived scientifically or artistically. Due to the intrinsic nature of the creative phenomenon, it is very difficult for the artist to separate the scientific and artistic modes from the naturalistic or experiential stimuli. So he goes …
