Sanson d’Abbeville, the Royal Geographer of France, tells us that Florida of the latter part of the sixteenth century could be considered a part of New France, since the French were the first to establish a colony there with the consent of the inhabitants of the country.
The Legal Status Of The Negro In Florida, Thelma Bates
The Legal Status Of The Negro In Florida, Thelma Bates
Florida Historical Quarterly
The history of the negro has been for centuries a history of enslavement. Sir Harry Johnston observed that the negro, “more than any other human type has been marked out by his mental and physical characteristics as the servant of other races.” His dominant characteristics, docility, submissiveness, cheerfulness of disposition and a short memory for sorrows and cruelties have made him largely subordinate to others. “Of this disposition the most aggressive and progressive race has taken advantage and for centuries held the black man in bondage."

History Of The Introduction And Culture Of Cuba Tobacco In Florida, Charles H. Dupont
History Of The Introduction And Culture Of Cuba Tobacco In Florida, Charles H. Dupont
Florida Historical Quarterly
An address delivered before the Florida Fruit Growers Association, at Jacksonville, January 20, 1875, by Ex-Chief Justice Charles H. DuPont of the Supreme Court of Florida, and taken from the Proceedings of that meeting. It is now believed that in the history of a people a record of the lives of the people themselves is of greater import than that of those in authority. The facts regarding early tobacco growing in Florida are now generally unknown, but of greater importance is the record of Judge Dupont’s observations extending over a period of forty years on “the influence of tobacco culture …

The Ruins Of Fort San Luis Near Tallahassee, Venila Lovina Shores
The Ruins Of Fort San Luis Near Tallahassee, Venila Lovina Shores
Florida Historical Quarterly
In western Florida there are many places of historic interest whose physical remains have been obliterated by the action of the elements, and the memory of man may have long since ceased to know them. Now and then the student searching historical material finds bits of information left by the pens of long ago concerning them. Here are some of these fragments relating to Fort San Luis.
Ocala Prior To 1868, Eloise Robinson Ott
Ocala Prior To 1868, Eloise Robinson Ott
Florida Historical Quarterly
Uncommonly colorful in its historical background, Ocala, the seat of justice of Marion county, held a position of unique importance among the towns of central Florida in the early days of our statehood. Among the older settlements and so situated geographically that through it must pass the pioneers pressing southward its influence was soon felt, for interwoven with its sturdy agricultural and industrial progress we find the glamour of a social life that left lasting impress upon educational and political activities throughout a large part of the State.

Following these, a score of letters will be published here written by Samuel Forry, Surgeon, U. S. A., to Lieut. Phelps from various forts in Florida during the campaigns of 1837 and 1838. Although Spain agreed to cede Florida to the United States in 1819, the transfer did not take place until 1821; so the territory was not represented in the United States census of 1820. The first statistical account of its population, therefore, is that of 1830.

Notes On The Origin Of The Seminole Indians Of Florida, Frank Drew
Notes On The Origin Of The Seminole Indians Of Florida, Frank Drew
Florida Historical Quarterly
The settlement of the Seminole Indians in Florida has been entirely within the historical period. They were renegade Creeks (Muskokis) from Georgia, who invaded Florida following the raids made by the English under Governor Moore, of South Carolina, beginning in 1702. Moore drove the Timuquanas who inhabited the northern part of Florida (extending far southward) to the protection of the forts at St. Augustine.
St. Joseph, An Episode Of The Ecomonic And Political History Of Florida, James Owen Knauss
St. Joseph, An Episode Of The Ecomonic And Political History Of Florida, James Owen Knauss
Florida Historical Quarterly
We must now retrace our steps and consider the rivalry between the towns of St. Joseph and Apalachicola after the Lake Wimico and St. Joseph Railroad began business in September, 1836. While the preliminary work for the development of St. Joseph as a rival to the parent city was being so successfully carried out, the supporters of the latter place were not idle.

Lost & Found: Samuel Fuller’S Tigrero And Accidental Ethnography, Andrew Howe
Lost & Found: Samuel Fuller’S Tigrero And Accidental Ethnography, Andrew Howe
Far West Popular Culture Association Annual Conference
In 1954, Darryl Zanuck commissioned Samuel Fuller to journey to the Amazon and shoot footage of the Karaja tribe, around which the director would construct a screenplay based upon the life of Sasha Siemel, a big game hunter of note. Zanuck had optioned Siemel’s best-selling autobiography, Tigrero. Although John Wayne and Ava Gardner were soon attached to the project, executives at Fox would not sanction a shoot in such a dangerous location. The project was set aside and forgotten.
Nearly 40 years after his visit to Brazil, Fuller would return to the Karaja tribe. Out of this experience came …
