A Stowe Memorial, K. W. Hooker
A Stowe Memorial, K. W. Hooker
Florida Historical Quarterly
In the village of Mandarin on the St. Johns is the little “Church of Our Savior” with its memorial window to Calvin E. Stowe and Harriet Beecher Stowe. This fine example of American artisanship in stained glass represents the St. Johns River at sunset, seen through the moss-curtained branches of a big live oak-the “Stowe oak,” at Mandarin.
The First Protestant Service In North America, T. Frederick Davis
The First Protestant Service In North America, T. Frederick Davis
Florida Historical Quarterly
At dusk on April 30, 1562, two small vessels anchored off the bar of a river which was unknown to them, but which long afterwards became the St. Johns. Gaspard de Coligny, admiral of France and champion of the cause of the Huguenots, had decided upon America as a refuge from religious strife for his countrymen of the Protestant faith, who at the same time would create a new dominion by colonization, thereby extending the territorial possessions of France. These. two vessels under the command of Jean Ribault, 1 a native of Dieppe and a Huguenot, had been sent to …
The Timucua Indians Of Sixteenth Century Florida, W. W. Ehrmann
The Timucua Indians Of Sixteenth Century Florida, W. W. Ehrmann
Florida Historical Quarterly
When first visited by the Spanish explorers in the early sixteenth century, northern Florida was inhabited by the Timucua family of Indians. Their territory was bounded approximately on the west by the Aucilla River, on the north by a line running just north of the present Georgia-Florida state line from the Aucilla River on the west to Cumberland Island on the east, and on the south by a line extending from Tampa Bay to Cape Canaveral.

The Long-Awaited Bibliography Of Florida, Florida Historical Society
Florida Historical Quarterly
It was announced in the last issue of the Quarterly that the directors of the Society, at a special meeting held in Jacksonville May 2, provided for the organization of a committee to memorialize Dr. James Alexander Robertson’s unsurpassed contributions to the writing of the history of Florida. Acting on his authorization to appoint this committee the president of the Society secured with much gratification the acceptance of Mr. Charles B. Reynolds, author of the widely-read History of St. Augustine and long identified with the history of Florida, in particular as a member for many years of the Publications Committee …
The Use Of Florida Historical Material By A Journalist, E. V. W. Jones
The Use Of Florida Historical Material By A Journalist, E. V. W. Jones
Florida Historical Quarterly
We spread our newspapers before us at the close of day and read of the many events newly happened. In a few hours the swiftly spinning world has crossed the threshold of night, and a new day is here with new events. Yesterday is history. But look at your newspaper tonight and observe a significant fact. Today’s events are not all new. Many of them are in continuation of yesterday’s news.
A Diary Of Jesse Talbot Bernard 1847-1857, Rebecca Phillips
A Diary Of Jesse Talbot Bernard 1847-1857, Rebecca Phillips
Florida Historical Quarterly
In the fall of 1849 a young Virginian, a William and Mary student, cast his eyes toward the southernmost part of our country and made plans to come to Florida and teach school. He was Jesse Talbot Bernard, later to become mayor of Tallahassee and to serve many years on Florida’s Board of Education.
The East Coast In 1870, Florida Historical Society
The East Coast In 1870, Florida Historical Society
Florida Historical Quarterly
At the close of the Civil War, there were but two counties on the East Coast south of Cape Canaveral, Brevard and Dade. Dade had been established in 1886, but it was still virtually uninhabited wilderness in 1870, extending from the present southern boundary of St. Lucie County to the keys. The following narrative and statistical extracts are taken from The Florida Gazetteer, compiled and published by J. M. Hawkes, M. D. (New Orleans, 1871, 214 p.) Few copies were printed and the volume has now become rare.
The Care And Preservation Of Books And Records, Louise Richardson
The Care And Preservation Of Books And Records, Louise Richardson
Florida Historical Quarterly
Any brief article, such as this, on the preservation and care of records must be incomplete. Volumes have been and are being written on the subject, and the end is not yet. Scientists, engineers, librarians, and even a division of the League of Nations have devoted much time to a study of the subject. The United States Bureau of Standards in cooperation with the Carnegie Foundation and the National Research Council is continually carrying on research in the preservation of records. This research includes not only the preservation after records are made and distributed but includes research on the ingredients …

Ralph Waldo Emerson In Florida, Mrs. Henry L. Richmond
Ralph Waldo Emerson In Florida, Mrs. Henry L. Richmond
Florida Historical Quarterly
In the 1820’s Ralph Waldo Emerson was a young Unitarian minister living in Cambridge, Massachusetts. As one of six children of a widowed mother in meagre circumstances, his twenty-three years had been a struggle of ambition over privation. His health had never been robust and in the autumn of 1826 he developed a bronchial ailment that demanded a change from the rigors of a New England winter. He was persuaded by family and friends to leave his ministerial duties and, his good uncle Samuel Ripley assisting with travel expenses, on November 25 Emerson sailed in the ship Clematis for Charleston, …

Material Relating To British East Florida In The Gage Papers And Other Manuscript, Charles L. Mowat
Material Relating To British East Florida In The Gage Papers And Other Manuscript, Charles L. Mowat
Florida Historical Quarterly
For the history of the short-lived British province of East Florida the main source is undoubtedly the papers in the Public Record Office in London, of which almost all of first importance are available in the form of transcripts or photostats in the Library of Congress. Aside from this, perhaps the best single collection of manuscript material is that in the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. The nucleus of the library is its collection of rare books dealing with America, mainly in the colonial and revolutionary periods, but it possesses also an important …
Why Two Connecticut Yankees Went South, Samuel H. Fisher
Why Two Connecticut Yankees Went South, Samuel H. Fisher
Florida Historical Quarterly
General Edmund Kirby Smith was an outstanding figure in the War between the States, particularly in its closing years when he was in command of the Trans-Mississippi Department. He was Florida-born and his native State was proud to place his statue in the Capitol at Washington.
The St. Augustine Census Of 1786, Joseph B. Lockey
The St. Augustine Census Of 1786, Joseph B. Lockey
Florida Historical Quarterly
St. Augustine was the chief center of population in colonial Florida. It was not however at any time a town of considerable size. Indeed, the whole white population of East and West Florida in the first Spanish period never exceeded a few thousand at most. The explanation is simple. There were greater attractions elsewhere. Unlike Mexico and the other mainland regions to the south, Florida had no mines to be exploited, no extensive fields already prepared for cultivation, and no Indian serfs to do the white man’s bidding. Nor did it possess the conditions of soil and climate which made …
James Alexander Robertson, A. Curtis Wilgus
James Alexander Robertson, A. Curtis Wilgus
Florida Historical Quarterly
Few scholars have had such an extensive general understanding of, or such an intensive interest in certain fields of history as had Dr. Robertson. The Philippines, Latin America, Florida, and Maryland all attracted his earnest, enthusiastic, and scholarly attention; and in each of those fields the results of his labors are outstanding. Though honors came to him from four continents, those who knew him best remember the man before the scholar.
