Governor Cespedes And The Religious Problem In East Florida, 1786-1787, Richard K. Murdoch
Governor Cespedes And The Religious Problem In East Florida, 1786-1787, Richard K. Murdoch
Florida Historical Quarterly
Hardly a year had elapsed after the retrocession of East Florida to Spanish control in 1783, when one disturbing fact became evident to the authorities in St. Augustine and Havana. The desired increase in the Spanish population of the province was not materializing, and there were no indications of an imminent influx of settlers. This condition was due largely to the absence of any Spanish colonists in Cuba willing to move across the Bahama channel to the mainland. Already voices were being raised against the offering of inducements to obtain settlers for the less desirable portions of the Spanish colonial …

Flagler’S Associates In East Florida Development, Sidney Walter Martin
Flagler’S Associates In East Florida Development, Sidney Walter Martin
Florida Historical Quarterly
Financially, the Florida East Coast developments during the period 1885-1912, were the results of the efforts of one man, Henry M. Flagler. He spent an estimated fifty million dollars in Florida and received help from no outside source. However, to carry through his program, Flagler necessarily gathered about him a very able group of associates who should be given much credit for his accomplishments. Among this group were men who were to become life-long friends of the millionaire after years of close association. Flagler was a good judge of men, and therefore delegated responsibility to all of his associates in …

Florida And The Presidential Election Of 1928, Herbert A. Doherty, Jr.
Florida And The Presidential Election Of 1928, Herbert A. Doherty, Jr.
Florida Historical Quarterly
Presidential elections in the United States have furnished historians with interesting and extensive fields for research. In recent times the election which has perhaps furnished the richest field is the presidential race of 1928. This contest featured the elements of racial and religious intolerance as well as the diverse conflicts of section against section, “wet” against “dry”, liberal against conservative, and, especially, party loyalty versus moral conviction.

More About Dr. John Gorrie And Refrigeration, Ruth E. Mier
Florida Historical Quarterly
The principal source of the numerous brief sketches that have been written on the life of Dr. John Gorrie is four articles appearing in Ice and Refrigeration, of Chicago; and the first of these was, in the main, the source of the other three. Captain George H. Whiteside, whose brother Samuel J. Whiteside was a friend and contemporary of Dr. Gorrie’s, was the author of that article, entitled “Dr. John Gorrie, Sketch of the Career of the Original Inventor of the Ice Machine or Device for the Mechanical Production of Ice and Refrigeration.” His admiration for the man whose name …

From Pensacola To St. Augustine In 1827: A Journey Of The Rt. Rev. Michael Portier, Michael Portier
Florida Historical Quarterly
Michel Portier was born in Montbrison, France, in 1795. Entering the priesthood, he came to the United States in 1817, and in 1826 was made first Vicar Apostolic of the newly created vicariate of Alabama and the Floridas, in which there were but three parishes: Mobile, Pensacola and St. Augustine. It was Bishop Portier who in 1830 established Spring Hill College at Mobile, the influence of which on education in the South has been felt for more than a century. This account of his journey across Florida was written in French and published in Annales de la Propagation de la …

Napoleon B. Broward: The Years To The Governorship, Samuel Proctor
Napoleon B. Broward: The Years To The Governorship, Samuel Proctor
Florida Historical Quarterly
James Russell Lowell called Grover Cleveland the most typical American since Lincoln. Close to Cleveland could be placed Napoleon Bonaparte Broward. He was typical, but he was also unique. Limited in many ways and things, he was rich in others. His was an astonishing career: that of a man seemingly doomed to mediocrity and obscurity, yet whose worth and unremitting efforts for the betterment of his fellowmen have given him a place among those who have done most for Florida.

Joseph Byrne Lockey, Florida Historical Society
Joseph Byrne Lockey, Florida Historical Society
Florida Historical Quarterly
Very few natives of Florida have written of her history. This will not be true always, though fate has at times intervened-as in the case of Joseph B. Lockey who died on September 24 last, he having recently moved to Florida to write of his native state.
