Florida's Image In Juvenile Fiction, 1909-1914, Peter A. Soderbergh Nov 2021

Florida's Image In Juvenile Fiction, 1909-1914, Peter A. Soderbergh

Florida Historical Quarterly

In the years between Appomattox and Sarajevo many young readers took their leisure pleasures from the pages of hardbacked novelettes. More respectable, to parents at least, than the "dime novel," the novellas exploded with the heady escapades of fictional boys and girls whose mental and physical reserves were unlimited. Descended from earlier models created by Martha Finley and William T. Adams— and rooted in the "success" ethos popularized by Horatio Alger, Jr.— the series published after 1898 outdid their prototypes in every aspect but quality.

Florida Prepares For War 1860-1861, George C. Bittle Nov 2021

Florida Prepares For War 1860-1861, George C. Bittle

Florida Historical Quarterly

Florida in 1860 cast a peculiar aura. On the fourth of July, Susan Bradford Eppes, daughter of a prominent Tallahassee area planter, was "so proud of the Star-Spangled Banner" carried in a holiday parade by the Governor's Guards. Yet, members of the same militia unit may already have been contemplating the possibility of secession from the Union. West of Tallahassee, in Calhoun County, Florida’s most serious military event of the year was taking shape this same day. Despite ominous political tensions, North and South, local people seemed most concerned with their own immediate problems. A few years earlier two county …

Florida Live Oak Farm Of John Quincy Adams, William R. Adams Nov 2021

Florida Live Oak Farm Of John Quincy Adams, William R. Adams

Florida Historical Quarterly

The preservation of America’s forests did not become a vital concern much before the end of the nineteenth century. The five laws that Congress passed prior to 1873 dealing specifically with the woodlands resulted primarily from a determination to insure an adequate supply of timber for the navy. The live oak, indigenous to the southern coastal area of the United States, was the principal object of the first three laws, the Naval-Timber Purchase Act of 1799 and the two Naval-Timber Reserve acts of 1817 and 1827. Highly prized by shipbuilders for its extremely hard and durable wood, the live oak …

Black Slaves, Red Masters, White Middlemen: A Congressional Debate Of 1852, James E. Sefton Nov 2021

Black Slaves, Red Masters, White Middlemen: A Congressional Debate Of 1852, James E. Sefton

Florida Historical Quarterly

A list of the most noteworthy congressional debates over slavery would include those on the Compromises of 1820 and 1850, the Gag Rule, the slave trade, and the Kansas-Nebraska Bill, among others. Sometimes, however, debate on a comparatively minor episode of a large issue can be highly illuminating. In the spring of 1852, the House of Representatives devoted perhaps ten hours to a bill which brought to a close a bizzare story that had begun sixteen years earlier during federal efforts to remove the Seminole Indians from Florida. Ever since the United States acquired Florida from Spain in 1819, white …

St. Augustine School: Seventy-Five Years Of Negro Parochial Education In Gainesville, Florida, Harry A. Kersey, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

The Baptists and Presbyterians already had active congregations in Gainesville, Florida, when, in 1868, the Episcopalians formed "Trinity Parish." Land was secured and in 1873 a frame church was built on north Main Street where the Masonic Temple now stands. This structure served the needs of the parish for over three decades.

Rascal Or Representative?: Joe Oats Of Tallahassee And The "Election" Of 1866, Peter D. Klingman Nov 2021

Rascal Or Representative?: Joe Oats Of Tallahassee And The "Election" Of 1866, Peter D. Klingman

Florida Historical Quarterly

Ever since William Watson Davis, member of the so-called Dunning school of post Civil War historiography, popularized Florida’s Reconstruction as a period of dark, corrupt, rapacious rule, the image of the personalities and the events from 1865 to 1876, has remained tarnished. Revisionism, which overturned Davis's view by suggesting that Republican "rule" was tenuous at best and that corruption in politics was a sin of both parties, has only partially rehabilitated the traditional "tragic era." One incident still offered as "proof" for the traditional view of Negro and Republican rascality in Reconstruction is the story of Joe Oats and his …

Florida Whites And The Brown Decision Of 1954, Joseph A. Tomerlin Nov 2021

Florida Whites And The Brown Decision Of 1954, Joseph A. Tomerlin

Florida Historical Quarterly

The United States Supreme Court delivered its epochal opinion in the case of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka on May 17, 1954. Chief Justice Earl Warren, only recently confirmed by the senate, read the unanimous decision, which held that "in the field of public education the doctrine of 'separate but equal' has no place." The plaintiffs in the suit, subjected to racially segregated systems of education, were thereby "deprived of the equal protection of the laws guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment." But then the court postponed implementing its decree to hear more arguments in the next session on …

Tallahassee Through The Storebooks: War Clouds And War, 1860, Clifton Paisley Nov 2021

Tallahassee Through The Storebooks: War Clouds And War, 1860, Clifton Paisley

Florida Historical Quarterly

Tallahassee was a properous community, and the tastes of her citizens on the eve of the Civil War ran to luxury goods and labor-saving devices as indicated in the daybook for 1860-1863 of the William P. Slusser store on Monroe Street, Tallahassee. In the fall of the year, when schooners, barks, and brigs arrived at St. Marks port to pick up the some 50,000 bales of cotton shipped yearly out of Apalachee Bay, the vessels unloaded a variety of consumer goods that were eagerly awaited: bathtubs, washing machines to replace or at least to supplement scrub boards, and pumps and …

Membership Of The Florida Constitutional Convention Of 1868. A Case Study Of Republican Factionalism In The Reconstruction South, Richard L. Hume Nov 2021

Membership Of The Florida Constitutional Convention Of 1868. A Case Study Of Republican Factionalism In The Reconstruction South, Richard L. Hume

Florida Historical Quarterly

In accord with provisions of the Reconstruction Acts, members of the Florida constitutional convention assembled in Tallahassee in mid-January of 1868. An examination of the historiography of this controversial gathering, a body charged with framing the constitution which was to take effect when the state was returned to civilian rule, quickly reveals the existence of the standard Dunningite-revisionist dispute which has so characterized most writing on the postwar South. William Watson Davis, who completed his classic work on Reconstruction in Florida under the direction of William A. Dunning himself, believed that the delegates who attended the Florida "Black and Tan" …

The Confederate Stories Of America: The Short-Story Cycle And The Representation Of The American South, Ikuko Takeda Nov 2021

The Confederate Stories Of America: The Short-Story Cycle And The Representation Of The American South, Ikuko Takeda

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

My dissertation examines the ways in which the short-story cycle has provided a unique generic framework for representing and investigating the complex interplay of contending forces that constitute what we think of as the American South. Often confused with a collection of disparate short stories or a novel, the short-story cycle is a collection of short stories in which each story is independent, but simultaneously interrelated to one another. Although the South has produced a number of short-story cycles or linked story collections, scholars have not paid much attention to the connection between the genre/form and the region. I consider, …

Heroes At Home: Honoring Our Nation's Veterans, Kayla Vasilko Oct 2021

Heroes At Home: Honoring Our Nation's Veterans, Kayla Vasilko

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

There are currently 17.42 million veterans living in America today. These heroes dedicated their services in World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, and the Gulf War, leaving home and giving up the comforts of stability, family, and guaranteed safety to ensure that America remains a stable and safe place for individuals and families to call home, yet upon returning home themselves, our nation’s veterans have had to face immense hardships. About 40,000 veterans are without shelter in the U.S. on any given night; some of the leading causes of veteran homelessness include PTSD, social isolation, unemployment, and substance …

The Legacy Book In America, 1664–1792, Roxanne Harde, Lindsay Yakimyshyn Oct 2021

The Legacy Book In America, 1664–1792, Roxanne Harde, Lindsay Yakimyshyn

Zea E-Books Collection

Legacy books in colonial America were instruments for the transmission of cultural values between generations: the dying mother (usually) instructing and advising children on the path to salvation and heavenly reunions. They were a popular and influential form of women’s discourse that distilled the ideologies of the religious establishment into practical and emotional lessons for lay persons, especially the young.

This collection draws together legacy texts written by colonial American women and girls: five mother’s legacy books and two legacies by children, organized here chronologically. These legacies were written in anticipation of dying, making awareness of death central to the …

Warrioress In White: A Semiotic Analysis Of America's Joan Of Arc In The Women Of The Copper Country, Akasha Khalsa

Conspectus Borealis

Mary Doria Russell’s The Women of the Copper Country is a fictionalized historical account of the 1913 mining strike in the Keweenaw Peninsula. Significantly in this strike, a great deal of leadership was focused in the Union’s Women’s Auxiliary. In particular, one woman formed the backbone of the local movement. Known by her community as Big Annie, Anna Klobuchar Clements was the heart of the 1913 strike. Memories of her bravery linger today in the form of recorded testimonies by elderly community members, immortalization in plaques and songs, and Russell’s popular novel. Today she is remembered not as herself, not …
