This series of five photographs of woodcut engravings depicts Adam and Eve in Paradise along with the serpent and Tree of Knowledge. The engravings originally accompanied ballad broadsides printed by various firms including Schneider and Meyers, Heinrich B. Sage, Samuel Bauman, M. Dahlem and H. W. Villee. These photograph reproductions were used by Alfred Shoemaker in the production of an article for The Pennsylvania Dutchman and contain his notations on the reverse of the photos.

The following summary traces the evolution of Mark Twain's perspective from his early humorous sketches to the profound disillusionment of his final years. Barbara Beth Luchsinger argues that Twain possessed a naturally romantic nature that struggled to adjust to a realistic and often disappointing environment. This psychological maladjustment manifested early in his career as a recurring pattern of initial enthusiasm for new ventures followed by rapid despondency and restlessness once the routine became tedious. While early works like the celebrated frog story utilized dishonesty as a comedic device, Twain’s later writing shifted toward a sharp denunciation of human nature.

It is seldom that a critical assessment of a writer's work can even attempt to be definitive during the writer's lifetime. It is even more rare when that writer continues as an active observer, participant and contributor in the humanities for two decades after publishing his last book and publicly announcing his retirement from writing. But such a writer is Carl Van Vechten. His first volume was published in 1915, his last in 1932.
