Betty Wiseman graduated from Belmont College and began teaching health and physical education in 1966. She was the founder and coach of the Belmont women’s basketball team, the Rebelettes (now Bruins), in 1968. At the time, it was one of the first women’s collegiate teams in the southeast. She was inducted into the Belmont Athletics Hall of Fame in 1981. She was also inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. Wiseman coached the women’s team for 16 years (1968-1984) before moving into athletic administration at Belmont. She served as Assistant Athletics Director until her retirement in 2013. …
Bret Harte, Patrick Morrow
Bret Harte, Patrick Morrow
Western Writers Series Digital Editions
Bret Harte is well known as the first internationally famous writer of short stories about the West. “The Luck of Roaring Camp,” “The Outcasts of Poker Flat," and “Tennessee’s Partner,” all published in the late 1860's, earned Harte the recognition of the nation's popular audience and approval by Emerson, Lowell, Longfellow, Howells, and other leading literary men of the day. In 1870 Harte, then editor of the San Francisco-based Overland Monthly, published “Plain Language from Truthful James,” better known as “The Heathen Chinee.” Hawked on the street corners, endlessly reprinted, the poem created a national sensation. Soon afterwards, Harte …

The Philosophy Of Symbolic Interactionism, Richard Wendell Beeson
The Philosophy Of Symbolic Interactionism, Richard Wendell Beeson
American Studies ETDs
The major purpose of this study is to demonstrate the theoretical formulation of symbolic interactionism. An historical examination reveals that philosophical pragmatism is foundational to the methodology of symbolic interactionism. Pragmatism itself is based on major conceptual contributions from empiricism, idealism, and evolutionism. From these older systems various aspects have been selected by pragmatism and oriented toward a unique American cultural experience to produce a unified method of inquiry applicable to the understanding of individual, group, and societal problem solving. The unification of methodology found in symbolic interactionism is shown by the construction of a diagrammatic model which reveals the …

The Short Stories Of MáRio De Andrade, Gerald Glen Curtis
The Short Stories Of MáRio De Andrade, Gerald Glen Curtis
American Studies ETDs
In spite of much critical material about other aspects of Mario's literary production, little has heretofore appeared in regard to his short stories.
The man and the artist in Mário are intimately related, a proper appreciation of the latter depending upon understanding the former. Mario was outstanding for his love for mankind, his exuberance for life, his concept of happiness. His religious and political convictions were less stable, his concert of art and the artist was utilitarian and pragmatic, a reflection of his human solidarity and his desire to reduce the gap separating the artist from the common man.
Mário's …

Asa Eastwood And His Diaries, 1806-1870, Faye Dudden
Asa Eastwood And His Diaries, 1806-1870, Faye Dudden
The Courier
Like so many men of his day, Asa Eastwood kept a diary. The four volumes he filled from 1806 to 1870 delineate nineteenth century customs, events and patterns of living and are now available for research in the Asa Eastwood Papers at Syracuse University, along with small amounts of his correspondence and legal records. Eastwood was alert to events of historical importance, and episodes such as the 1807 New York-to-Albany voyage of Fulton's Clermont or John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry in 1859 did not escape mention in his diaries. Yet his entries are perhaps less significant for the passing …
The Modernity Of Stephen Crane's Poetry: A Centennial Tribute, Walter Sutton
The Modernity Of Stephen Crane's Poetry: A Centennial Tribute, Walter Sutton
The Courier
A hundred years have passed since the birth of Stephen Crane and eighty since his casual stay at Syracuse University, where he was better known as a baseball enthusiast than as a writer of high promise. Yet his writings in prose and poetry, beginning with Maggie: A Girl of the Streets (1893) and The Red Badge of Courage (1895) and continuing through the brief career that ended with his tragic death in 1900, retain a distinctive contemporaneity, a vitality and freshness that have resisted the passage of years. This quality is more evident, perhaps, in his poetry, which until lately …
