Howells, Marriage, And Swedenborg: The Influence Of Swedenborg's Teachings On Howells' Portrayal Of Marriage In His Novels, Nancy Danner Marlow
Masters Theses
Over one-half of Howells' novels are concerned with marriage and courtship. Like many other aspects of his thinking, Howells' ideas of marriage were influenced by the teachings of Emmanuel Swedenborg, an eighteenth century Swedish scientist and theologian. The bulk of Swedenborg's teachings regarding marriage are found in his The Delights of Wisdom Concerning Conjugial Love, published in 1768. Howells showed the influence of Swedenborgianism on the marriages in his novels in three major areas: the actual marriages in his novels, matters relating to marriage, and marital failures.
An important element in Swedenborgianism is the belief in marriages in heaven. …

Piltown Ii: Leslie White's Theory Of Cultural Evolution, Diana Amsden
Piltown Ii: Leslie White's Theory Of Cultural Evolution, Diana Amsden
American Studies ETDs
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The acceptance and popularity of White's theory, which helped reinstate cultural evolution as an anthropological subdiscipline and break the ground for the rapidly growing field of Marxist anthropology, indicate the current intellectual and scientific status of anthropology. A typical response to White's theory is fascination--coupled with an inexplicable intellectual indignation. This dissertation explains why.
PROCEDURE: The author analyzes White's two books on cultural evolution, The Science of Culture (cl949) and The Evolution of Culture (cl959), chapter by chapter. The purpose of each is determined and the arguments White gives in its support listed and analyzed. The author …
Some Observations On The Loyalist Experience: 1770-1780, Susan Abadessa
Some Observations On The Loyalist Experience: 1770-1780, Susan Abadessa
The Courier
Two hundred years after the American Revolution, the conflict is still being represented for the most part as a war between the people of the united colonies and the government of England. The Colonists who were slow to join the revolutionary cause are still regarded by many as traitors. Whether principle or personal gain led so many to remain loyal to England makes no more difference today than it did then. The English patriots among the colonists paid a hard price for their loyalty to the wrong side.

Andrew Sarris And The Politique Des Auteurs (1962-1974): An Assessment And An Analysis, Steven Grumbacher
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The politique des auteurs was, from the period 1968 through 1973, the dominant methodology in cinematic criticism. It was tentatively formulated by Francois Truffaut in 1954 and greatly expanded upon by Andrew Sarris in 1962. Briefly, the “auteur theory” (as it is known in English speaking countries.) contends that aesthetically important films are the product of an auteur--an equivalent term to author in a work of literature or composer as opposed to conductor in a musical composition--and that that auteur is usually the film’s director. The quality of the film under scrutiny is directly related to the ability of that …

Ideological Conflicts In Early American Books, Clarence H. Faust
Ideological Conflicts In Early American Books, Clarence H. Faust
The Courier
The following is an address given by Dr. Clarence H. Faust at the 1957 Syracuse University Scholastic Achievement Dinner. When this article was written almost twenty years later, during the celebration of the bicentennial anniversary, it seems pertinent that the conflicts inherent in the American expression of democracy were so clearly outlined by the late Dr. Faust.
El Machismo En Mexico Y Tres Novelas De Mariano Azuela, Enrique M. Santamaría
El Machismo En Mexico Y Tres Novelas De Mariano Azuela, Enrique M. Santamaría
American Studies ETDs
This dissertation surveys what several social thinkers have said about machismo and the manner in which the concept figures in Mariano Azuela's fiction. The word is a modern term, non-existent in Castillian dictionaries, which derives from the word macho. It is applied to certain individuals to describe characteristics of destructive and narcissistic behavior usually accompanied by an exaggerated and false show of force, boldness and masculinity. Despite the great concern for machismo, generated in the XX century in studies by scholars and essayists such as Ramos, Paz, Aramoni, Oscar Lewis, Bejar Navarro, Segura Millán, Reyes Nevares, Bermúdez, Carrión and others, …
Kate Chopin In Transition From Local To Naturalism, Roselyn Cornwell Hines
Kate Chopin In Transition From Local To Naturalism, Roselyn Cornwell Hines
Theses & Honors Papers
My thesis concentrates on Mrs.Katherine O'Flaherty Chopin, a Southerner who published between 1889 and 1899, and who, for years, was considered an obsolete Local Colorist. She is now enjoying a revival of interest which must be attributed to her importance as a writer who exhibited those precepts upon which modern literature is based - those found in the movements of Realism and Naturalism.
With literary roots in the Local Color mode,Mrs.Chopin's early works exemplify, to some extent at least, all of its principles. While she falters somewhat in the dominant literary technique, we find the Local Colorist's emphasis on geography, …
Mark O. Hatfield And The Search For An Evangelical Politics, Robert James Eells
Mark O. Hatfield And The Search For An Evangelical Politics, Robert James Eells
American Studies ETDs
Twentieth century American evangelical Christians have not been known for their social and political involvement with the world. Chapter one of this study provides a brief explanation of evangelical historical non-involvement, showing that the primary reason for this inactivity has been the presence of theological dualisms in evangelical thought. The opening chapter also reveals that beginning in the 1940's and 1950's, evangelicals have rediscovered the social question, and that some are even turning their attention, for the first time, to politics as a possible area of Christian witness. The remaining chapters concentrate on one individual, Senator Mark O. Hatfield, Republican …
La ProblemáTica Socio-ÉTnica En La Obra Narrativa De José MaríA Arguedas, Amos Leon Bright
La ProblemáTica Socio-ÉTnica En La Obra Narrativa De José MaríA Arguedas, Amos Leon Bright
American Studies ETDs
José María Arguedas (1911-1969) is considered by most critics to be the best interpreter of cross-cultural conflict in Peruvian letters. This dissertation first explores briefly the historical background of the Quechua-speaking peoples of the Peruvian highlands and Arguedas’ relation to them before analyzing his development as a writer. The most recent studies by literary critics indicate that Arguedas should not be included in the list of indigenista authors. However, Chapters III and IV of this dissertation show that analysis of that literary current and of the author’s work leave little doubt about his close affiliation with indigenismo.
