The Influence Of The Position Of Women In The Society On The Development Of Nursing As A Profession In America, Marion Rachael Dickens
The Influence Of The Position Of Women In The Society On The Development Of Nursing As A Profession In America, Marion Rachael Dickens
American Studies ETDs
The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the cultural context in which nursing developed in America. It is the thesis of the dissertation that while there have been many influences on the development of nursing, nursing education, and nursing practice, the predominant influence on all facets of nursing has been that it has been a feminine occupation, and women have had a subordinate status in a society led and controlled by men. The first chapter examines the origins of nursing in America, stressing how, when more men were occupied away from the everyday activities of the society, women became …
Climbing The Racial Mountain: The Folk Element In The Works Of Three Black Writers, Gordon Query Freeman
Climbing The Racial Mountain: The Folk Element In The Works Of Three Black Writers, Gordon Query Freeman
American Studies ETDs
Folklore is an integral part of Black literature, and writers Langston Hughes, Richard Wright, and Ralph Ellison have used the Negro folk tradition in particularly significant ways. All three have written about the importance of the folk tradition in literature, and they share many views. This study examines their individual works within the context of an accepted definition of "folk" and "folklore" and compares their various approaches to the folk tradition. The definition of "folk" and "folklore" and the methodology for tracing the folk element have been revised in the past decade. As a result, there now exists a more …

Wit And Humor In The Slave Narratives, Daryl Cumber Dance
Wit And Humor In The Slave Narratives, Daryl Cumber Dance
English Faculty Publications
This passage suggests something of the nature of Black humor and the function it has served, not only in the slave narratives, but in the folk tales and throughout the history of recorded literature from William Wells Brown to Amiri Baraka. The life revealed in all of these sources is shown to often be alternately degrading and courageous, tragic and absurdly comic, hopeless and yet enduring; indeed that life could hardly ever be termed merely amusing. And the Black character, though he may be seen to laugh, can hardly be deemed carefree, unbothered, satisfied, even truly happy. Indeed the paradox …

The American Dream And The Unwanted Child, Wallace A. V. Hedges
The American Dream And The Unwanted Child, Wallace A. V. Hedges
American Studies ETDs
By the time a nation celebrates a 200th birthday it is expected that will have a long list of accomplishments. It can also be expected to have some deficits; it may not as yet have accomplished all of its goals. This study has viewed one facet of the American Dream – the myth of America as a welcoming place for the unwanted of the world. The myth is that here there will be no unwanted people. This study explores this part of the American Dream by examining the plight of unwanted children. This study has grown out of this …
"Introduction" To The Great Plains: Environment And Culture, Frederick C. Luebke
"Introduction" To The Great Plains: Environment And Culture, Frederick C. Luebke
Department of History: Faculty Publications
In the pages that follow I have summarized the views of certain selected scholars whose emphases seem to illustrate changing and contrasting interpretations of the interaction of environment and culture on the Great Plains. I have grouped their writings into two inclusive categories. First come those whose conceptual schemes suggest the primacy of environmental variables. I refer to these scholars, perhaps simplistically, as environmentalists, even though this term has acquired a different meaning in recent years. In the second group are several scholars, selected more arbitrarily than the first, whose writings seem to accord more importance to cultural factors. For …

Archaeological investigations were conducted at Old Ursuline Academy (41 BX 235), presently the Southwest Craft Center, during the month of October, 1975. This work was necessitated by planned renovations to the dormitory building, one of the complex of nineteenth century buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places (Figs. 1, 2).
The nature of the renovation would consist of excavating below the present floor of the dormitory basement so that air conditioning ducts and blower units might be installed; transformation of this basement from a storage place into a series of functional rooms and galleries; construction of a new …

In the spring of 1976, test excavations were carried out by the Center for Archaeological Research of The University of Texas at San Antonio at the site of a small park to be built immediately north of the Spanish Governor1s Palace on Military Plaza in downtown San Antonio. Because of its proximity to one of the original structures built by the Spanish in the early 18th century, testing was deemed necessary to determine if remains of other early structures would be disturbed by the park construction.
The testing program was administered by Dr. Thomas R. Hester. Field operations from April …
