Archaeological Testing Of Historic Sites To Be Affected By Construction Of Ih 410 Through The San Antonio Missions National Park City Of San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, John W. Clark Jr.

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The State Department of Highways and Public Transportation plans to add access lanes along segments of Loop 410 (IH 410) in the City of San Antonio, Texas. The project traverses the acequia systems of Missions San Francisco de la Espada and San Juan Capistrano and also is adjacent to an historic site, 41BX252, which is the possible location of some historical structures. Backhoe trenching and hand excavation, conducted December 8 and 9, 1986, produced no nineteenth century or Spanish Colonial materials, and also revealed that the segments of the acequias and desagues (laterals) within the project right-of-way had been disturbed …

Test Excavations At Site 41lk269 Live Oak County, Texas, Glenn T. Goode

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Archaeological site 41LK269 is a prehistoric open campsite located on a Pleistocene terrace remnant of the Nueces River near George West, Texas. The small portion of the site which remains within the right-of-way of US Highway 59 produced a meager sample of aboriginal materials. The cultural remains, devoid of diagnostic artifacts, consist of lithic artifacts and fire-cracked rock. The absence of diagnostic materials precludes an accurate assessment of the occupation time frame. The recovery indicates that that portion of the site which occurs within the highway right-of-way does not merit nomination to the National Register of Historic Places or designation …

Excavations At Site 41ck193: Cultural Resource Investigations Along Sh 158 West Of The Town Of Edith Coke County, Texas, Alan J. Wormser

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Test excavations were conducted at Site 41CK193 by members of the cultural resources staff at the Texas State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT). The excavation was completed between November 17 and 19, 1986, as part of a road improvement project along SH 158 in northwestern Coke County. A few cutting implements and a blade core were found by Wayne C. Young of the SDHPT in a general surface collection which he made in September of 1986. Subsequently, four 1 by 1 meter test units and a single 2 by 2 meter test unit were excavated by hand to …

Archaeological Investigations Within The Right-Of-Way Of Ih 27 At Yellowhouse Draw Lubbock County, Texas, Jerry Henderson

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Machine testing was conducted by the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation in a small area bounded by the right-of-way of IH 27 on the north side of Yellowhouse Draw in Lubbock County, Texas. The area was tested because of the high probability of buried cultural materials; however, no archaeological materials were encountered. Soil deposits equating to the Archaic and Ceramic Periods at the Lubbock Lake Site (Strata 3, 4, and 5 at Lubbock Lake) were present but they did not contain remains of a material culture.

Test Excavations Of Site 41nl20 Nolan County, Texas, Jerry Henderson

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Site 41NL20 is located on the south terrace of Sweetwater Creek at County Road 216 in Nolan County, Texas. Archaeological testing, con-fined to the county road right-of-way and a temporary 50-ft. easement on the east side of the county road, was conducted by the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) in 1983 and 1986 and produced a small quantity of chert debitage and a partially intact hearth. No prehistoric tools were recovered and no concentrations of debitage or activity areas were discerned. The main portion of the site appears to lie on private property east of the tested …

Archeaological Testing Of Site 41vv801 Val Verde County, Texas, A. Joachim Mcgraw

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

During March of 1986, archaeologists from the cultural resources staff of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) conducted limited testing at the prehistoric site of 41VV801 in eastern Val Verde County, Texas. Portions of the site, which is located along a terrace remnant between Miers Draw and Red Bluff Creek, extend into the right-of-way of US Highway 277. The area within the right-of-way was investigated to determine the site's significance and its merit as a State Archeological Landmark. The results of testing indicated that the site had been disturbed extensively by a long span of natural processes, …

Archaeological Testing Site 41wh85 Wharton County, Texas, Wayne C. Young

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Archaeological site 41WH85 was located by the author during a routine archaeological survey of FM 442 in June of 1986. A small area about 100 ft. in diameter was located north of FM 442, west of the San Bernard River, and east of a private gravel driveway (Fig. 1), and contained a quantity of small oyster shell fragments and very scattered flint flakes. Surface visibility was quite limited by waist-high native prairie grasses. It was noted that all shell fragments were found along an eroded surface between the gravel driveway and the San Bernard River. Once right-of-way limits were defined …

Archaeological Investigations At 41lk201 Choke Canyon Reservoir, Southern Texas, Cheryl Lynn Highley

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Two phases of archaeological investigations were carried out by the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, in the Choke Canyon Reservoir region in south Texas. Sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the investigations were necessitated by the impending dam construction and subsequent filling of the reservoir. During Phase I, numerous prehistoric sites were recorded and tested. As a result, several sites were recommended for additional excavations during Phase II. Site 41LK201 was selected for intensive investigations because it contained both Archaic and Late Prehistoric cultural remains, was well stratified, and contained preserved charcoal and …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Reported in this volume are the results of archaeological investigations at 72 prehistoric sites located in the basin of Choke Canyon Reservoir on the Frio River in Live Oak and McMullen Counties, southern Texas. The sites investigated in this study will be affected in one way or another by a lake formed after construction of Choke Canyon Dam, a project of the United States Bureau of Reclamation CUSBR). The research was sponsored by the USBR as the second and final phase of a two-stage program of archaeological investigations designed to mitigate damage or destruction of cultural resources resulting from dam …

The Clemente And Herminia Hinojosa Site, 41jw8: A Toyah Horizon Campsite In Southern Texas, Stephen L. Black

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Site 41JW8 is a major prehistoric occupation site located along Chiltipin Creek in Jim Wells County, in southern Texas. Excavations at the site in 1981 recovered a single component that can be linked with the Toyah horizon. Radiocarbon dating of three fire features places the occupation to around A.D. 1350-1400. The excavation of 82 m2 clustered in blocks produced an abundance of well-preserved data. Special studies of faunal and botanical remains and analyses of artifacts and cultural refuse distributions provide the basis for addressing various research problems. The site is shown to be a base camp where hunting and animal …

Early Evidence Of Maya Hieroglyphic Writing At Kichpanha, Belize, Eric C. Gibson, Leslie C. Shaw, Daniel R. Finamore

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Archaeological research, conducted intermittently at Kichpanha, Belize, from 1973 to 1983 was primarily limited to surveying and mapping. During the 1985 season, test excavations initiated in the 1983 season were continued (Gibson 1985a). House mounds and plazuela groups yielded further evidence of extensive use of the site from the Xe and early facet Mamom phases (relatively dated to approximately 900-700 B.C.), until its near total abandonment in the Early Postclassic (ca. A.D. 900-1000). In this paper we present some preliminary results of the 1985 season at Kichpanha in the context of our research foci which included economic relationships with the …

An Appeal For Racial Justice : The Civic Interest Progressives' Confrontation With Huntington, West Virginia And Marshall University, 1963-1965, Bruce A. Thompson

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In 1963, the shock waves of the sit-in movement and the growing black unrest throughout the country reached Huntington. This growing discontent with the status quo of segregation and racial discrimination and the impulse from the sit-in movement for direct, non-violent protest combined to mobilize several students at Marshall University who formed the Civic Interest Progressives (CIP), a biracial civil rights group.

John Nichols, Peter Wild Jan 1986

Liza Minnelli leaps into most people’s minds at the mention of The Sterile Cuckoo. Starring in the film released by Paramount in 1969, she played a teenager at turns vivacious and vulnerable, always intriguingly unpredictable. Even now, much of the public retains the image of endearing, if somewhat fey, co-ed Minnelli bubbling through the bittersweet adventures of a campus love affair. Her performance, perhaps more than the novel of the same title published four years earlier, launched John Nichols’ career by ingratiating the author with an American audience easily spellbound by youthful verve.

The emergence of a contemporary literature written in English by Native Americans has forced yet another reassessment of what constitutes a “Western American” literature. That Native American writers like Leslie Silko, N. Scott Momaday, and James Welch have been well-received both by academe and the mass market suggests on the one hand that these Native American writers have a good deal in common with Anglo-American literary traditions, both canonical and popular. On the other hand, the fact that they can be identified as “Native American” because of their preoccupation with particular themes or attitudes toward their art suggests that there …

Elmer Kelton, Lawrence Clayton Jan 1986

Elmer Kelton, Lawrence Clayton

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

Although Elmer Kelton is well known as a livestock journalist, he has produced twenty-six novels in which—with two exceptions—he has chronicled the settlement of the Texas frontier. He begins his study with the days of early settlement by Anglos in the Stephen F. Austin Colony in southeast Texas and includes the war with Mexico, the Civil War, and the burgeoning of the cattle kingdom. He ends his Texas saga in the modem period with an aging rancher battling drought and federal bureaucracy.

In the January 1981 issue of Horizon, John Lahr writes: “California is a state of amateur outdoorsmen—of runners, of swimmers, of bikers, of sailors, and of golfers. Here, the surface of life can be enjoyed without analysis. Amidst the sun, surf, and caesar salads, intellectual stimulation is never a high priority.” He goes on to trash those who “never question the consequences of Los Angeles or the California scene . . . —the general absence of community, the moral stupor, the greedy self-aggrandizement, and the emotional impoverishment that characterize and enchant the place” (“Entrepreneurs” 39). These comments, so typical …
