Alistair Cooke: A Response To Granville Hicks' I Like America, Kathleen Manwaring Oct 1987

Alistair Cooke: A Response To Granville Hicks' I Like America, Kathleen Manwaring

The Courier

Written at the urging of his friend Louis Birk, managing editor of Modern Age Books, I Like America was Granville Hicks' attempt to present to a middle-class audience "the official line of the Communist Party in the Popular Front period". Published when the slogan 'Communism is Twentieth-Century Americanism' identified the interests of the mass of the American population, which was suffering from the Depression and the inadequate response of the New Deal for relief, with the aims of the Party, the book was later described by Hicks as "a venture in propaganda". The Granville Hicks Papers in the George Arents …

The Courier

This article describes the life and struggles of Jermain W. Loguen (originally named Jarm Logue), born a slave, who escaped to Syracuse, New York. Once in Syracuse, he became active in the Underground Railroad, the abolition movement, and even entered politics as a public speaker. His letters can be found in the Syracuse University Special Collections, as part of the Gerrit Smith papers. Smith was also a leading abolitionist who corresponded with major figures in the antislavery movement and influential freed slaves such as Frederick Douglass.

The Early Life Of Ann Nolan Clark: A Contextual Biography, Jeanne Carolyn Whitehouse Sep 1987

The Early Life Of Ann Nolan Clark: A Contextual Biography, Jeanne Carolyn Whitehouse

American Studies ETDs

This dissertation traces the development of award winning children's author, Ann Nolan Clark, from her birth in Las Vegas, New Mexico Territory, through her early years of teaching and writing up to a period of re-dedication and commitment to her work, following the death of her son in World War II. The form of narrative biography was chosen for this work because Clark often used a variety of narrative techniques in the writing of historical profiles and biography.

Beaux Gestes: The Indian And The European In Pre-Colonial North America, Philip Drover Burnham Aug 1987

Beaux Gestes: The Indian And The European In Pre-Colonial North America, Philip Drover Burnham

American Studies ETDs

Early contact between Amerindian and European cultures in pre-colonial North America (1492-1620) has never before been submitted to systematic analysis on the basis of a close reading of primary source material. Beaux Gestes examines the early literature on cultural exchange in the context of emerging European expansion, and how the image of the American Indian was used to rationalize the colonization of the northern half of the New World.

The methodology of Beaux Gestes is thematic--various aspects of early exploration are examined before submitting a few narratives of an archetypal character to closer scrutiny. The texts are read with an …

Commentary: Trotter Review, Vol. 1, Issue 2, Wornie L. Reed Jun 1987

Commentary: Trotter Review, Vol. 1, Issue 2, Wornie L. Reed

Trotter Review

This issue of the Trotter Institute Review is devoted to the portrayal of blacks in the media. The mass media can be a positive or negative force in the struggle for racial progress. Unfortunately, the black community faces media that provide many negative influences. Consequently, there is a continuing need to address this issue.

The mass media is a major instrument of socialization in the American society. As such, it helps to determine how an individual sees the world. The prevailing definitions of social reality and social problems, as well as the characterization of groups of individuals, are learned through …

Reel Blacks: Blacks In Disguise, Patricia A. Turner Jun 1987

Reel Blacks: Blacks In Disguise, Patricia A. Turner

Trotter Review

Gremlins and Little Shop of Horrors are very likeable films. The former is rather charming, and the latter is one of the most originally-rendered musicals ever produced. Indeed, it is the positive surface of the films that makes their underlying message so insidious. Fortunately, the final twist common to both films can give solace to the viewer who would like to see the disguised blacks triumph. At the end of Gremlins the original Mogwi is still alive, albeit back in the capable hands of the mysterious Chinese man, and Little Shop closes as the camera follows Seymour and Audrey into …

In Search Of Lost Cultures: Books 1987, Shaun O'Connell Jun 1987

In Search Of Lost Cultures: Books 1987, Shaun O'Connell

New England Journal of Public Policy

Shaun O'Connell reviews a number of books whose focus is the "loss and tenuous preservation" of cultural values. He detects signs of a cultural crisis in which "literature and American life are increasingly detached" and disturbing indications of a loss of "national consensus," of trust, and perhaps of polity itself. Two hundred years after the signing of the Constitution, he writes, in this year of celebration, we learned in minute detail of the Iran-Contra deceits and duplicities, of government by secret White House junta having replaced the rule of law. Most dismaying of all, we did not appear to be …

The Imperishable Perishable Press, Terrance Keenan Apr 1987

The Imperishable Perishable Press, Terrance Keenan

The Courier

When art and meaning come together so effectively, when craft and purpose meld so well, something precious emerges. Of the many one-of-a-kind things in the world, few have a memorable identity. In the work of Walter Hamady the art of bookmaking explores new terrain. The finished product is not a candidate for the museum or the gallery. It holds something for the eye and the mind both, something that was created by human hands to be held by human hands. Often beautiful, always different and provocative, the books of the Perishable Press are durable reminders of the creative spirit at …

Freak Show Images From The Ron Becker Collection, Robert Bogdan Apr 1987

Freak Show Images From The Ron Becker Collection, Robert Bogdan

The Courier

This article details the rise of freak shows from 1840 to 1940 in America, drawing from the extensive collection found in the Ron Becker Collection in the Syracuse University Special Collections. The exhibits played upon the superstitions and prejudices of popular American culture, and every exhibit was a fraud of some sort. The photographs of these "human curiosities" fascinated Ron Becker, who amassed a collection of the photos, mostly from the photographers Charles Eisenmann and Frank Wendt.
