Sons Of A Trackless Forest: The Cumberland Long Hunters Of The Eighteenth Century, Mark A. Baker
Sons Of A Trackless Forest: The Cumberland Long Hunters Of The Eighteenth Century, Mark A. Baker
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
For much of America's history, a certain fascination has existed in American culture with the lifestyle of the woodsman who made the hardwood wilderness his home. Over time this fascination has given birth to a collection of romantic traits firmly identified with such a frontiersman.
The requirements for survival in a deep wilderness forced the pre-American Revolution era woodsman turned long hunter, to be "Indian," to demonstrate a high level of marksmanship, and ultimately to draw most of his needs from the bounty of the forest. Such requirements tended to promote the popular conceptions surrounding the eastern frontiersman. Looking beyond …
Musical Quotation In The Music Of George Crumb, Richard M. Dowell
Musical Quotation In The Music Of George Crumb, Richard M. Dowell
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates American composer George Crumb's employment of musical quotation in his works from 1962 to 1985. The thesis also contains a brief biography of the composer and overviews of his major compositional style traits and his musical influences. Because Crumb often quotes from the same composers and musics that have influenced his musical style, the subject musical influences is related to the main thesis, musical quotation. Also, Crumb sometimes borrows a specific gesture from another composer's work without actually quoting it--that is making significant note and/or rhythm alterations; this type of borrowing is described by Crumb as a …

John Muir Newsle spring, 1992 university of the pacific volume 2, number 2 ON EARLY YOSEMITE ARTISTS AND TOURISM Katherine M. Littell of Harvard University has published a short essay about early Yosemite artists entitled, "Chris Jorgensen and the Pioneer Artists of Yosemite." It appeared in the fall, 1990 issue of the Harvard Graduate Society Newsletter. Littell reports that nineteenth century artists were very much responsible for the political viability of Yosemite. The new Yosemite Grant needed tourism to be finacially stable. California had accepted administration of Yosemite in 1866 but was not given any funds by the federal government …

The Development Of A Youth Consumer Culture In The United States In The 1950s, Phillip D. Mccaskey
The Development Of A Youth Consumer Culture In The United States In The 1950s, Phillip D. Mccaskey
History Theses & Dissertations
The 1950s witnessed the development of an important cultural phenomenon in the United States, the result of the demographic increase known as the baby boom. To an unprecedented degree in American history, various facets of the American economy focused towards infants and adolescents due to their swelling numbers and subsequent economic influence. Youths themselves sought to exert their economic power resulting in the formation of a dynamic youth culture manifesting itself most prominently in the entertainment media.
This study examines the origins and scope of the American baby boom. Cultural trends directly related to the baby boom are also analyzed. …

Wising Up The Marks: The Later Works Of William S. Burroughs, Stephen L. Starck
English Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the later works of Williams. Burroughs, focusing on them as they articulate his theories of the individual. Following a brief look at each work (The Wild Boys, Exterminator!, Port of Saints, Cities of the Red Night, The Place of Dead Roads, The Western Lands) is a discussion of Burroughs' concerns about the individual, as expressed in his theories of government, religion, the body, and language. Burroughs instructs individuals, attempting to educate them to all the restraints imposed by society. The overall narrative structure of these six works is also discussed and then …
The American Schoolyard: A Critical Study Of Charles Bukowski's Short Fiction, Jonathan D. Weiss
The American Schoolyard: A Critical Study Of Charles Bukowski's Short Fiction, Jonathan D. Weiss
English Theses & Dissertations
Charles Bukowski is one of America's most prolific writers. He has published forty-five books of poetry and prose and is translated in over a dozen languages, Recently he wrote the screenplay for the movie Barfly. However, despite his accomplishments, Bukowski has received little critical attention from the academic world. It is thought that his works are too violent or too pornographic to be deserving of critical attention. In this thesis, I attempt to show that this is not the case. Using Marxist, feminist, and Freudian analyses of Bukowski's short fiction, I show that Bukowski's work is, without a doubt, worthy …

The Poetics Of Open And Closed Forms, Tyrone Williams
The Poetics Of Open And Closed Forms, Tyrone Williams
Wayne State University Dissertations
This dissertation is an investigation into the "origins" and developments of the concepts of open and closed forms in American poetics and poetry. After a brief overview of the form these concepts take in the poetics of Walt Whitman and William Wordsworth, I trace the development of these concepts through the critical work of Charles Olson, Barbara Herrnstein-Smith, Joseph Frank and William Spanos. My argument is twofold: (1) that the concepts of open and closed forms are predicated on philosophical notions concerning form, image, space and time, and (2) these concepts are all interrelated, i.e., open forms are closed in …
