Reading One Poet In Light Of Another: Herbert And Frost, James Boyd White
Reading One Poet In Light Of Another: Herbert And Frost, James Boyd White
Articles
In this paper I wish both to draw certain connections between Herbert and Frost and at the same time to say something in a general way about the process by which such connections can be made. It is with the latter question that I begin. Once the relation between two writers would have been thought of mainly in terms of "influence." And one might indeed argue that Herbert did have significant influence on Frost's poetic practice — if not directly, for Frost was not a great reader of Herbert, then indirectly, through Emerson, who was in many ways Frost's master …
From Exile To Affirmation: The Poetry Of Joseph Brodsky, David Patterson
From Exile To Affirmation: The Poetry Of Joseph Brodsky, David Patterson
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
This article examines the relation between the exile of the poet from his homeland and the "exile of the word." The notion of the exile of the word pertains to the poet's problem of re-introducing meaning to the word—an excess of meaning that conveys more than the word can normally convey—through his poetry. Showing how the poet in exile becomes a poet of exile, the article examines what poetry has to do with a larger difficulty of exile and homelessness in human life. Brodsky's poetry, the article argues, addresses this very difficulty. The article concludes that the human capacity to …

On Reading Poems: Visual & Verbal Icons In William Carlos Williams' «Landscape With The Fall Of Icarus», Irene R. Fairley
On Reading Poems: Visual & Verbal Icons In William Carlos Williams' «Landscape With The Fall Of Icarus», Irene R. Fairley
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
Williams' admiration for Brueghel's landscape is coded in structural and stylistic correspondences between the poem and the painting. Structures in the poem have effects analogous to the use of devices of color, line, foregrounding in the painting. The poem, like the painting, presents a «neutral» scene but subtly insures the reader's involvement. Further, Williams draws a visual statement so that graphic features suggest a global image isomorphic with the motif of descent. Features of the poem, such as line and clause length, syntactic construction, semantic coherence, are discussed as factors that contribute to rapid glancing and increase readability. A study …

These ten themes signify dominant concerns of Twentieth Century America and are arranged, in the following pages, with those works pertinent to the particular theme. This approach to culture is intended for use in an advanced ESL class, its purpose being to increase awareness of and promote discussions about our culture. Inscluded also are: a brief rationale for the project, a list of the criteria …
The Modernity Of Stephen Crane's Poetry: A Centennial Tribute, Walter Sutton
The Modernity Of Stephen Crane's Poetry: A Centennial Tribute, Walter Sutton
The Courier
A hundred years have passed since the birth of Stephen Crane and eighty since his casual stay at Syracuse University, where he was better known as a baseball enthusiast than as a writer of high promise. Yet his writings in prose and poetry, beginning with Maggie: A Girl of the Streets (1893) and The Red Badge of Courage (1895) and continuing through the brief career that ended with his tragic death in 1900, retain a distinctive contemporaneity, a vitality and freshness that have resisted the passage of years. This quality is more evident, perhaps, in his poetry, which until lately …
The Satirical Rogue Once More: Robert Francis On Poets And Poetry, Syracuse University Library
The Satirical Rogue Once More: Robert Francis On Poets And Poetry, Syracuse University Library
The Courier
When "The Satirical Rogue Once More," a collection of ten roguish comments came to the hands of the Courier editors, it sparked new interest in the writer, who describes himself as "walking round and round Poetry on its pedestal and taking shots at it from every possible angle. Shots with a light gun, a water pistol, a pea shooter." This reawakened interest led directly to another look at the Robert Francis Papers, presented to the University by Mr. Francis from 1967 to 1969, in the manuscript collection of the George Arents Research Library.

The Concept Of God In The Poetry Of The American Negro, Mary H. Jones Sr.
The Concept Of God In The Poetry Of The American Negro, Mary H. Jones Sr.
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation
Many authors have written much about the Negro and religion. Those who know the black man in American readily concede that he is by nature a lover of God, and that this great innate belief manifests itself in his daily life. Books of deep and light reading- some written in prose, others in verse- have been produced by American Negro men and women. Many of their works have mirrored forth the concept of God in the mind of the Afro-American; but this concept has not remained the same- this great faith is at present suffering decay.

Color, Countee Cullen
Color, Countee Cullen
Electronic Texts in American Studies
Poet, playwright, novelist, graduate of DeWitt Clinton High, New York University, and Harvard University, Countee Cullen (1903–1946) emerged as a leading literary figure of the Harlem Renaissance. Color (1925), his first published book of poetry, confronts head-on what W.E.B. DuBois called “the problem of the 20th century—the problem of the color line.” The work includes 72 poems, such as the following:
Incident (For Eric Walrond)
Once riding in old Baltimore,
Heart-filled, head-filled with glee,
I saw a Baltimorean
Keep looking straight at me.
Now I was eight and very small,
And he was no whit bigger,
And so I smiled, …
