Our proposal for Guangdong Museum (New) is "The Box of Changes." It evolves from two ideas about place: place as real artifact-the site- and place as a cultural idea-the I Ching.

The Providence River Relocation project in Rhode Island’s capital city redirected rivers, overhauled transit infrastructure, and created a new riverfront downtown. Thirty years in the making, the relocation of the Woonasquatucket and Moshassuck rivers, construction of a new rail station, highway interchanges, and twelve bridges restored historical links among Providence’s Capital Center, College Hill, and downtown. The project improved traffic flow in and through downtown and added pedestrian-friendly spaces, including 1.5 miles of river walks, along with a new urban park including a restaurant, amphitheater, fountain, and boat landing.

Redirecting the rivers created new, marketable commercial land without demolishing …

The development of the downtown business district of Provo, Utah has closely followed the orderly growth envisioned by its founders. However, one early change in the city's layout had a profound effect on the direction of Provo's development. In 1852, Brigham Young moved the site of the Provo tabernacle from its original location in the designated public square to a location on the fringes of the earliest city boundaries. The result of this action was a sometimes heated controversy among residents regarding the city's true public center. The Minor Theatre and the adjacent Minor Building have been submitted for consideration for designation under the City of Arcata's Landmark and Historic Preservation Overlay Zone (LHP). Both buildings are historically important to Arcata by virtue of their association with pioneer lumberman and entrepreneur Isaac Minor and because of their contribution to the commercial, social and cultural life of the community. Although the buildings have experienced exterior alterations since their construction three- quarters of a century ago, both retain sufficient architectural integrity to easily qualify for LHP designation.

With its exceptional array of Victorian and turn-of-the- century commercial and residential structures, Ferndale is recognized statewide as a place of historic significance. Individual structures are notable examples of late 19th and early 20th century styles, many displaying the opulent applied ornamentation of the period. The architectural integrity of the McMillan House has been negatively impacted by several significant alterations. These include the addition in the northeast corner, the front door, the louvered window in the upstairs of the south wall, and the window shutters. Other alterations have occurred, but they are not particularly intrusive and could remain without impinging upon the building's architecture.

This study is about the residential location of the upper-income class in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It focuses on the spatial pattern of this location and its relationship with the characteristics of the natural environment and the availability of public services and facilities.

It shows that Rio de Janeiro's spatial structure up to the nineteenth century was similar to the Latin American Colonial Model: the city developed around the main plaza which concentrated the elite class.

During the nineteenth century, the first elite settle­ments were formed outside the city center in a spatial pat­tern which approximated to Hoyt's Sector Model: …

Transition periods such as England experienced during the seventeenth century are particularly efficacious for the study of the development of design concepts as the controversy which is generated during times of great socioeconomic change heightens the contrast between the old and new, and more clearly reveals the relationship between the physical and the social and economic environments. The purpose of the study is to examine the rebuilt city in terms of the changing forces which shaped it. The scope is a detailed examination of one particular aspect of the post-fire reconstruction period -- the public market system.

This thesis is concerned with the internal development of a regional Park system. In order to understand the function of a regional park it is useful to compare the numerous kinds of outdoor areas and the activities related to each area. The general relationships are, perhaps, better understood if areas and activities are grouped, in spite of some loss in detail. Many classification systems are possible; this one is recommended by the Resources for the Future, Inc. They classify recreation areas into three meaningful types: user-oriented, intermediate, and resource-based.
