Commuting imposes opportunity costs on travelers since those with long commutes have less time to participate in other activities. This paper examines how commute duration is associated with activity patterns. It utilizes a two-day time use survey administered in the United Kingdom in 2014 and 2015. Focusing on full-time employees and controlling for socio-demographic characteristics, we regress time spent engaging in 22 different activities on commute duration using OLS and Cragg two-part hurdle modeling. We separately test the effects of commute duration on activity participation for men versus women and for single persons versus persons in couples. We also report …

The oxford dictionary defines “dichotomy” as, “noun: a division or contrast between two things that are or are represented as being opposed or entirely different.” In the context of Grand Island, Nebraska, a dichotomy exists in the development of housing. In the 1900s, sand quarrying began along the railroad in Grand Island. When the sand was dredged up from these quarries, the floodplain began to fill in holes over 5 feet deep, creating man-made lakes. This joint creative project examines ordinary suburban architecture through a neutral lens. American suburbs are often a source of vibrant debate in architectural discourse. The goal of this research was not to contribute to the endorsement or condemnation of suburbia, but to instead study the composition of these common place typologies. The three typologies studied in this project were shopping malls, big box stores, and gas stations; each of these has a distinct organization and set of characteristics that separates it from the others. In addition to these services, the tower’s checker pattern can symbolize the surrounding patchwork of native unplowed tallgrass prairie that comprises the Nine-Mile Prairie (NMP) Environs. At the core is NMP, a 230-acre public property full of tallgrass prairie biodiversity and Nebraska history. This program evaluation looks at the Community Planning and You workshop of the Allston Brighton Community Development Corporation in Boston, MA. The literature review explores the effects and responses to racialized housing policies, including the development of the community development field and its use of neighborhood organizing. The evaluation is grounded in the frameworks and theories of Arnstein’s (1969) Ladder of Citizen Participation, Putnam’s (1994) social capital, and Freire’s (2018) use of popular education to develop Critical Consciousness. Chicago’s Little Village community bears the heavy burden of environmental injustice and racism. The residents are mostly immigrants and people of color who live with low levels of income, limited access to healthcare, and disproportionate levels of dangerous air pollution. Before its retirement, Little Village’s Crawford coal-burning power plant was the lead source of air pollution, contributing to 41 deaths, 550 emergency room visits, and 2,800 asthma attacks per year. The disparity is derived from the locational choices of physicians which are influenced by diverse factors such as backgrounds where they grew up or type of facility at which they worked. This study examines physician movements which vary depending on the types of physician and facility in Nebraska. Having an eviction record “blacklists” tenants from finding future housing. Even renters with mere eviction filings—not eviction orders—on their records face the harsh collateral consequences of eviction. This Note argues that eviction records should be sealed at filing and only released into the public record if a landlord prevails in court. Juvenile record expungement mechanisms in Illinois serve as a model for one way to protect people with eviction records. Recent updates to the Illinois juvenile expungement process provided for the automatic expungement of certain records and strengthened the confidentiality protections of juvenile records. The right to housing is guaranteed by Spain's constitution, the principles of the European Union, and U.N. human rights treaties to which Spain is signatory, yet Spain scarcely provides affordable housing and leaves its citizens struggling with poverty and unable to find a place to live. Unlike much of the rest of Europe, Spain’s social rented sector represents less than 1% of its total housing stock. Through policies that favor homeownership, promote the real estate market, and privatize social housing, Spain has left its citizens reliant on the private market for their fundamental need for housing. The objectives of this research are to determine the factors associated with the minimum, maximum, and average thermal emittance temperatures of wall murals in Richmond, Virginia, and make recommendations for color and location of wall murals. Data for 17 parameters were collected for 64 art murals in downtown Richmond, VA from 28 June 2018 – 19 July 2018. Date, time, solar exposure duration, solar elevation, latitude, longitude, air temperature (C), lux, color, solar cardinal minutes, cardinal direction, minimum, maximum, and average surface thermal emittance temperatures of mural face were recorded for each mural. Amalgamated Housing Co-operative is located north of the Jerome Park Reservoir in The Bronx. Sponsored by the Amalgamated Clothing Workers Union (A.C.W.U.), this development opened in 1927 under the New York State Limited Dividend Housing Law of 1926.1 Built as affordable housing for moderate-income workers, the limited dividend housing legislation granted tax exemptions to the co-operative for a period of 20 years. Its residents were "co-operators," not tenants, who would own shares for their apartments in the development. Now in its ninth decade of operation, the Amalgamated is the oldest limited dividend housing development in the country and has been …

Algiers, the first French colony in Africa, was conquered in 1830 and gained independence in 1962. During this period, Algiers was constructed into an Orientalist acting ground that was shaped through political, social, economic formations in the built environment. The French colonial fascination with Algiers centered around the casbah, and thus the casbah became a laboratory for ethnographic and urban reflections. The French process of urban planning included military intervention, preservation motivated by exoticism and museology, and superstructure master plans dictated by the present benefit of indigenous communities to the colonial regime. Property rights in the subsurface of land are adapting to accommodate modern activities like massive hydraulic fracturing (fracing). Property rights will need to continue adapting if they are to accommodate other developing activities like large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS). Courts and commentators rarely approach the nature of subsurface property directly. They tend instead to discuss appropriate standards for tort liability when disputes arise—for example when artificial fissures from a frac treatment extend into and drain oil or gas from a neighbor’s land. This dissertation explores the relationship between the city of Alcalá de Henares, Spain and Mexico City, Mexico, in terms of the colonization-decolonization processes of the latter. First, Alcalá de Henares and a few years later, Mexico City, suffered profound urban transformations that led to the construction of the so-called City of God (Civitas Dei). The City of God was a utopia: an urban, philosophical and educational model conceived during the first stages of the early modern period. งานวิจัยนี้เป็นงานวิจัยเพื่อวิเคราะห์แปลงที่ดินที่สามารถสร้างอาคารได้อย่างเต็มประสิทธิภาพ คือ มีค่าอัตราส่วนพื้นที่อาคารรวมต่อพื้นที่ดิน (FAR) 10:1 เนื่องจากในทางปฎิบัติแล้วแปลงที่ดินที่พัฒนาได้ FAR 10:1 มีจำนวนน้อยเพราะติดปัญหาทางด้านกายภาพ รูปร่างที่ดิน และความกว้างของถนน งานวิจัยนี้จะทำการสำรวจแปลงที่ดินที่อยู่ในพื้นที่ศึกษาโดยใช้ข้อมูลจากเว็บไซต์กรมที่ดิน และนำมาออกแบบอาคารโดยใช้โปรแกรมสเก็ตอัพ (SketchUp 2020) ภายใต้กฎหมายควบคุมอาคาร อาทิเช่น ความสูงอาคาร ระยะร่น ผลการศึกษาพบว่าในแปลงที่ดินที่ได้คำนวณและออกแบบจำนวน 259 แปลง มีเพียง 52 แปลงเท่านั้นที่มีค่า FAR 10:1 โดยแปลงที่ดินที่เล็กที่สุดมีเนื้อที่ 1 งาน 55 ตร.ว. และแปลงที่ดินที่มีขนาดใหญ่สุดมีเนื้อที่ 9 ไร่ 3 งาน 77.8 ตร.ว. ในแปลงที่ดิน 52 แปลงที่มีค่า FAR 10:1 มีลักษณะทางกายภาพดังนี้ 1. ความกว้างเขตทางที่น้อยที่สุด คือ 33 เมตร และ 2. ความยาวด้านที่ติดถนนที่สั้นที่สุด คือ 18.3 เมตร จากข้อมูลนี้แสดงให้เห็นว่าการแก้ปัญหาในเรื่องการปรับปรุงกายภาพของที่ดินสามารถใช้วิธีการรวมแปลงที่ดินหรือทำการปรับปรุงสภาพแวดล้อมของพื้นที่ดินโดยการขยายขนาดของถนนหรือตัดถนนเพิ่ม จะช่วยให้แปลงที่ดินมีค่าอัตราส่วนพื้นที่อาคารรวมต่อพื้นที่ดินเพิ่มสูงขึ้นจากเดิม

Harris County, Texas, experiences flooding almost every year, and the situation is getting worse. Uncontrolled development is leading to an increase in flooding events. This study investigated how rapid urbanization and sprawl led to a higher frequency and intensity of flooding in the Cypress Creek watershed in northern Harris County. According to urban ecology, the basis of the theoretical framework, the human actions on the environment are not just bystanders, but direct contributors as inputs. This dissertation examines geographic forms of evidence in the practices of landscape architects and geographers. I analyze evidence not only as an epistemic phenomenon, but as an aesthetic one, as well. Convincing an audience that the world is (or should be) one way and not another requires that knowledges be stacked, extended, and stitched together in a manner admissable to an audience.
