35 | Maresha Excavations Final Report Ii: Hellenistic Terracotta Figurines From The 1989–1996 Seasons, Adi Erlich, Amos Kloner
IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority
This is the second volume in a series of final reports documenting the large-scale excavations at the site of Maresha, mainly in the Lower City, during the 1980s and 1990s. In the Hellenistic period, Maresha was an important and multi-cultural city. Hellenistic terracottas are a varied and widespread medium of Hellenistic art of a religious and cultic nature. The extensive repertoire presented here, mostly found in residential contexts during the excavations of the mid-1980s to 1996, opens a window onto the city’s culture, religion and daily life. It describes their typology as well as the production methods and techniques.

36 | The Necropolis Of Bet Guvrin–Eleutheropolisi, Gideon Avni, Talila Michaeli, Tamar Winter
IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority
This large cemetery is associated with the city of Bet Guvrin–Eleutheropolis in the Judean Shephelah, which began as a Jewish village, then transforming into a central Roma–Byzantine polis and administrative center. The cemeteries comprise varying types of burial caves hewn into the soft-limestone bedrock in dense clusters over a prolonged period of some 500 years. The architecture, symbols and artifacts, including pottery, ceramic oil lamps, glass and other small finds, enabled a chronological typology of the caves, reflecting the socioeconomic and ethno-religious standing of the mixed pagan, Jewish and Christian population of the city.

Many generations of indigenous pathways through the forests of eastern Texas have their origins obscured in antiquity. Utilized by early European explorers, these pathways became modified through heavy use and the expansions and improvements needed to accommodate easy passage of European horses and carts and finally the heavy wagons of Anglo-American settlers. The first road through Texas, El Camino Real de Los Tejas, utilized portions of these early trails.
El Camino Carretera (known as the cart road) is an early segment of El Camino Real de los Tejas that crossed the Sabine River at the boundary between Texas and Louisiana. …

Historic Preservation And Revitalization In Working-Class Communities, Paul Woodward
Historic Preservation And Revitalization In Working-Class Communities, Paul Woodward
All Theses
Historic preservation and revitalization efforts undertaken in lower-income, working-class communities often have negative consequences, including displacement and gentrification. Too often, sense of place and community spirit are sacrificed in an effort to save important historic buildings. As both sense of place and historic fabric are important, it is necessary for preservationists, planners, community members, and others to analyze the current condition under which preservation and revitalization take place, and begin looking at alternatives. Through analysis of case studies that focus on mill villages, three different approaches to preservation and revitalization are considered. Each case study offers valuable information for other …

Housing And Living Patterns Among Charleston's Free People Of Color In Wraggborough, 1796-1877, Katie Ann Stojsavljevic
All Theses
This thesis focuses on the living patterns of Charleston's antebellum free black population by examining spatial contexts, architectural styles, building materials, and the various socio-economic factors which influenced such patterns. Wraggborough, serving as a specific case study neighborhood, was selected based on its residential diversity in terms of both race and class. The timeline from 1796 to 1877 follows Wraggborough from its origins and subsequent development, into the enslavement crisis on the eve of the Civil War, through the Reconstruction era.

The "Dead House" At The Former Charleston Navy Base And Shipyard, Christopher Ohm
All Theses
Over the years a small brick building on the former Charleston Navy Base and Shipyard has been studied, yet still leaves many with unanswered questions. Much speculation has been made about its builder, and date of construction, but with little success. Many researchers cannot agree on the original use of this building, usually referred to as the 'Dead House.' Historical research pointed to many answers, but often led to almost insurmountable questions. This author's recent research has found several missing sites eliminating much confusion. Further research has led to explanations for many of the enigmatic aspects of this building. Architectural, …

Addressing The Nature Of Gettysburg: 'Addition And Detraction' In Preserving An American Shrine, Brian Black
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
As Gettysburg's sacred meaning extends beyond its 140th year, the site's nature has become a primary source of contest or debate. With the acceptance of new National Park Service policies at the end of the twentieth century, the ecology of the Gettysburg battlefield became both aid and bane to the effort to preserve history. By making this ethical choice, the ecology of the battlefield became part of another historic altercation on this hallowed ground. The debate asks Americans to make severe judgments on basic values that concern the act of preservation. In short, this debate confronts difficult questions including: Is …

Learning To Live With The Past: Cultural Heritage Preservation In Aksum, Ethiopia, Lara Cueni
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The powerful Aksumite civilization left behind a great deal of archaeological material in the north of Ethiopia, but current cultural heritage preservation in the modern town is rudimentary. The government, realizing the potential for cultural heritage as an economic resource, has enlisted the work of a number of heritage management experts to not only improve heritage preservation in Aksum but also involve the local community to a greater extent. Especially noteworthy is the construction of a new museum in Aksum to replace the old, insufficient museum. Planners have been striving not only to improve preservation system and the tourism industry, …

The Plurality Of Truth In Culture, Context, And Heritage: A (Mostly) Post-Structuralist Analysis Of Urban Conservation Charters, Jeremy C. Wells
Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications
This paper analyzes international heritage conservation charters through the post-structuralist lens of relative and perspective-driven “truths,” fragmentation, and dramatic settings. The “SPAB Manifesto,” the Athens Charter, the Venice Charter, the Burra Charter, and the Nara Document on Authenticity are evaluated within the framework of discursive theories established by Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Jürgen Habermas, and Gilles Deleuze in regard to cultural meanings and absolute and relative truths. Preservation doctrine through the Venice Charter engages in a positivist truth based on the substantiation of material fetishes. These early doctrines imbue the materiality of the object with truth as an absolute rather …
