The Gullah Geechee Heritage Preservation Project is a multi-jurisdictional collaboration to support the documentation, recognition, and preservation of historic Gullah Geechee African American Ancestral Communities and their significant historic and cultural sites. Clemson MSHP students along with the help of Dr. Pernessa Seele began research by collecting prior studies, historical maps, and photographs of Lincolnville. Students also obtained copies of prepared National Register nominations. They researched local archives, including the South Carolina Room at the Charleston County Public Library, Historic Charleston Foundation Archives, the South Carolina Historical Society, and the Charleston Library Society.

Creating Walkability With Wayfinding Techniques Through Adaptive Reuse For Historical Site, Alaa Al-Merheb, Mary Felix, Eslam M. Elsamahy, Mostafa Khalifa, Khaled El-Daghar
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
Wayfinding refers to information systems that guide pedestrians through a physical location, enhancing their understanding and experience of the space. Wayfinding is especially crucial in complex urban environments, healthcare and educational campuses, and transportation systems. An effective wayfinding system ensures that such situations remain less stressful and allows individuals to feel safe and secure. Adaptive reuse, also called building reuse, is basically a process in architecture where old structures get refitted for different uses. Adaptive reuse renews old buildings, making them assets to the local community, be it low-income housing, student housing, community centers, or mixed-use creative venues. The process …

74/1 | Hellenistic Nysa-Scythopolis Stratigraphy And Architecture, Gabriel Mazor, Walid Atrash, Debora Sandhaus
IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority
This is the fifth volume of publications of the Bet She’an Archaeological Project, describing the large-scale IAA excavations at the site of Bet She’an–ancient Nysa-Scythopolis, during 1986–2002. Bet She’an V: Hellenistic Nysa-Scythopolis is the second volume presenting the full excavation report of the IAA excavations at Tel Iẓṭabba, conducted between 1991 and 1994. The first volume in this series, Bet She’an IV (IAA Reports 62), focused on two corpora of finds: stamped amphora handles and sealings. The current volume, Bet She’an V, is comprised of two parts (IAA Reports 74/1, 74/2) dedicated to the stratigraphy, architecture and finds from the …

Deuce Redemption: Grindhouse Cinema, Moral Panic, And Urban Renewal, Robert Brenner
Deuce Redemption: Grindhouse Cinema, Moral Panic, And Urban Renewal, Robert Brenner
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
If you consult standard histories of the “redevelopment” of 42nd Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenue, AKA “the Deuce,” you will read that it was filled with nothing but criminals and pornographers, that decent people avoided it at all costs, and the only way the block could be “saved” was by seizing it via eminent domain, evicting all the current tenants, and replacing them with Disney and its fellow entertainment corporations.
The purpose of this thesis is to offer a more nuanced alternative to these standard histories. I will argue that the Deuce was a lower-class, multiracial, queer entertainment …
Ethnomathematics Projects For Projective Geometry In Distance Learning, Wen-Haw Chen, Ja'faruddin Arsyad Ide
Ethnomathematics Projects For Projective Geometry In Distance Learning, Wen-Haw Chen, Ja'faruddin Arsyad Ide
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
This article reports on an ethnomathematics project we developed and implemented in an online learning environment to connect with students’ cultural backgrounds and to highlight the links between their environment, culture, and mathematics. The project is based on Simple House Theory, a framework that involves the application of projective geometry in the design of traditional houses and building numbers. Our results show that this approach fostered active participation and engagement despite the standard constraints and challenges of distance learning.

A Value-Based Hbim Framework For Adaptive Reuse Of Heritage Buildings: A Case Study Of Bayt Yakan, Ayman Samy, Alaa E. El-Habashi, Al-Moatazbellah Al-Behiery
Journal of Engineering Research
This paper presents a value-based Heritage Building Information Modeling (HBIM) framework for assessing the adaptive reuse of heritage buildings. The framework integrates key heritage values criteria -authenticity, integrity, significance, and adaptability- into HBIM, allowing for structured decision-making that balances heritage preservation with contemporary operation. Using Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA), different adaptive reuse scenarios are evaluated in HBIM Environment to ensure that interventions respect the building's authenticity, integrity, and significance while meeting sustainable operational needs. The case study focuses on Bayt Yakan, a 17th-century heritage building in Cairo, where three adaptive reuse scenarios—continued use as a library, conversion into a hotel …

Preserving Sunken Granite With Olive Oil For Sustainable Underwater Museums, Ahmed Gelany, Asmaa Ibrahim, Omnia Mohamed, Somaya Mabrouk, Rahma Alaraby, Shahd Abdalmajeed, Wessam Turkey, Nada Shokr, Usama Konbr
Journal of Engineering Research
This study addresses the crucial role of heritage preservation in sustainable urban development, as emphasized by the Egyptian National Agenda 2030. Focusing on the challenges of preserving sunken ancient Egyptian granite monuments in Aboukir Bay, this study investigates the potential of olive oil, a natural, bio-based material, as a sustainable in-situ preservative. Granite samples treated with olive oil were subjected to simulated marine conditions and evaluated using compression teas sts, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results demonstrated that olive oil effectively inhibited water absorption and biocolonization, mimicking the lotus effect, and increased the fracture loading of granite …
Balancing Sustainability With Preservation In Historic Italian Architecture, Maya A. Bruno
Balancing Sustainability With Preservation In Historic Italian Architecture, Maya A. Bruno
CISLA Senior Integrative Projects
This research examines the intersection of historic preservation and sustainability in Italian architecture, analyzing how architects and contractors adapt historic structures to modern energy efficiency standards while maintaining cultural integrity. Using three Italian case studies—Ex-STA.VE.CO in Bologna, Sant’Apollinare in Perugia, and Castelvecchio in Verona—the study explores common challenges in regulatory compliance, material constraints, energy efficiency, seismic resilience, and adaptive reuse. Each case illustrates how sustainability measures interact with Italy’s stringent conservation laws and how historic buildings, inherently designed for climate adaptability, can be innovatively retrofitted. The findings provide insights into reconciling preservation principles with sustainable interventions, offering policy recommendations for …

Achieving Vision Zero On Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard: Enhancing Pedestrian Safety And Reclaiming Community Identity In South Dallas, Safa Sayeed Khan
Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive
Fair Park, a neighborhood of South Dallas, has experienced historical displacement, urban neglect, and pedestrian safety inequities, especially along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard (MLK Blvd). This boulevard is a vital entryway to Fair Park and a center for local businesses, attracting significant foot traffic. However, it currently lacks essential pedestrian safety improvements. (Dallas Examiner, 2023). Due to its high crash rate, poor sidewalks, lack of crosswalks, and poor lighting, MLK Blvd has been identified as one of Dallas' most dangerous pedestrian areas, despite being an essential vehicle and pedestrian corridor that connects residents to Fair Park (Phillips, 2024; "South …

Navigating Preservation And Memorialization In Contested Spaces: A Case Study Of The Richmond Community Hospital And The Legacy Of Sarah Garland Boyd Jones, Rebecca M. Skatoff
Master of Urban and Regional Planning Capstone Projects
This plan develops a strategic framework to address the complexity of navigating preservation and memorialization in contested spaces, using the Richmond Community Hospital as a case study. Rooted in the legacy of Sarah Garland Boyd Jones, the first African American woman certified to practice medicine in Virginia, this plan examines the intersection of racial equity, cultural heritage, and land-use planning. The Richmond Community Hospital case study raises broader questions about how African American cultural heritage sites are preserved to confront erasure, ensure an accurate historical record, and promote historical literacy for current and future generations. Conducted with reflective practice, this …

A First Model Foundation Design Of Wood Pillar In Banjarmasin Swampland, Nursyarif Agusniansyah, Gusti Novi Sarbini, Akbar Rahman, Muhammad Tharziansyah
ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
Banjarmasin's swampland presents distinct characteristics that make it suitable for constructing homes, but it also requires special attention, especially concerning the foundation. The soil in this area often has extremely low carrying capacity, which poses a significant challenge for construction. Mistakes in choosing construction materials, coupled with mismatched building loads and inadequate foundation functions, often result in foundation failures—a common cause of building collapses. As the complexity and functionality of buildings increase, the need for more thoughtful house design becomes more crucial. The commonly used wooden pile foundation, while popular, has limited load-bearing capacity, necessitating modifications to enhance its strength. …
