The Movement Of Architectural Elements Within Charleston, South Carolina, Laura Burghardt
The Movement Of Architectural Elements Within Charleston, South Carolina, Laura Burghardt
All Theses
The movement of architectural elements from one building to another within Charleston, South Carolina, is an integral part of historic preservation in the city. From the earliest days of the city's historic preservation movement in the 1920s, preservationists have understood the importance of preserving elements of historic structures. In the early twentieth century, architectural elements were threatened by antique dealers and collectors of architecture who sought to purchase decorative elements, even out of standing houses. Buildings were also threatened with demolition as gas stations and other modern structures were constructed. Rather than seeing pieces of history lost, preservationists salvaged materials …

Sustainable Portland: Implementation Series 2, New England Environmental Finance Center
Sustainable Portland: Implementation Series 2, New England Environmental Finance Center
Climate Change
The Portland Municipal Climate Change Working Group prepared a report in March 2008 that outlined several recommendations as a commitment by the City to address greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) produced during daily municipal operations. The Municipal Climate Action Plan was written in partnership with Clean Air – Cool Planet and Portland officials, and acknowledges under Recommendation #2 that an employee energy efficiency program would provide significant positive impact on the City’s reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Best practices from three cities show that focus on the greening of City Hall is critical in developing a program that promotes partnerships, community …

The Management Of Built Heritage: A Comparative Review Of Policies And Practice In Western Europe, North America And Australia, Tracy Pickerill, Lynne Armitage
The Management Of Built Heritage: A Comparative Review Of Policies And Practice In Western Europe, North America And Australia, Tracy Pickerill, Lynne Armitage
Conference papers
Building on Pickerill’s (2002 & 2007) work in North America and Western Europe, this paper compares funding mechanisms, stakeholder involvement and area based heritage conservation models from Western Europe and North America with those of Australia. More specifically, the domain of enquiry considers Pickerill’s bifurcated model of the new governance of financing for conservation which recognizes the duality of tool knowledge and design knowledge. Examples from practice in Europe, America and Australia provide an illustration of these mechanisms.

An Assessment Of The Vulnerablity Of Coastal Stone Monuments In Ireland, Jason Bolton
An Assessment Of The Vulnerablity Of Coastal Stone Monuments In Ireland, Jason Bolton
Doctoral
The overall aim of this research is to explore, evaluate, compare and contrast the vulnerability to physical decay and deterioration of archaeological and architectural stone monuments located along the Irish coast, with those found in unpolluted inland environments. The usefulness of the coast and rivers for the exploitation of natural resources, trade and communications has resulted in the historic development of towns, villages, individual buildings, monuments, structures and complexes along the coastlines of the world. The legacy of Irish archaeological monuments and historic buildings built in stone and found in close proximity to the coast ranges from the earliest tombs …

39 | Salvage Excavations At Tel Moza: The Bronze And Iron Age Settlements And Later Occupations, Zvi Greenhut, Alon De Groot
IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority
The IAA excavations at Tel Moẓa, just outside Jerusalem, were initiated due to the relocation of the Jerusalem–Tel Aviv Highway, which stood to destroy all the antiquities along the new route. During three excavation seasons (1993, 2002–2003), 16 strata were defined, spanning the Pre-Pottery Neolithic period to the Ottoman period (the extensive Prehistoric finds are published elsewhere). This volume describes the finds from the Early Bronze Age onward, describing the pottery, glyptics and inscriptions, groundstone assemblages and other small finds. An outstanding discovery was a large silo complex of Iron IIB, leading the excavators to the interpretation that during this …

From The School-Lands To Kerry Hill: Two Centuries Of Urban Development At The Northern End Of Newport, R.I., James C. Garman
Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers
Known over time as the "School Lands" (ca. 1763-1800), "New Town" (ca. 1800-1850), and Kerry Hill (1850-present), the Kingston Avenue study era presents one of the earliest enclaves of free African Americans in Newport. Building on the work of the RIHP(1977) and Richard Youngken(1994), this essay seeks to identify and place into context surviving buildings and landscapes related to African-American experiences in the post-Revolutionary War, Antebellum and the Guilded Age periods. It represents the first systematic study of the establishment, settlement, and survival of this neighborhood, set on a windswept hillside on the northerly edge of the colonial city, and …
