For these and other reasons, private land trusts and government agencies generally use explicit criteria to prioritize their land acquisition activities and prospects.

15 | The Akhziv Cemeteries: The Ben-Dor Excavations, 1941–1944, Michal Dayagi-Mendels

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority

This volume presents the results of excavations in two Iron Age Phoenician cemeteries to the east and south of Tel Akhziv, excavated intermittently between 1940 and 1980. Most of the tombs are rock-hewn shaft tombs with a burial chamber. The finds, clearly belonging to the Phoenician cultural sphere, include a rich pottery repertoire, jewelry, amulets and a rich collection of terracotta figurines that provide a glimpse into the everyday life of the people interred here.

As part of a multi-disciplinary approach to historic preservation, background research and fieldwork proved the existence of prehistoric and historic archaeological remains on-site that can contribute to the understanding of regional prehistory and history.
