This study examines the usage of design-build by the Department of Transportation (DOT) of the 50 states in the United States. Design-build has been growing in popularity as a procurement form in both the private and public sectors, and in the last ten years many DOTs have started or expanded programs to use design-build for infrastructure projects. Project Risk Management is a critical construction management skillset for identifying risks, assessing risks, strategizing, and executing risk mitigation plans. Proactive risk management has been found to reduce negative impacts to project objectives and increase customer satisfaction. To improve project risk management contractors have a method of measuring perceptions and practices of risk management, also known as risk maturity. This study examines microeconomic factors that affect Bid Difference between the designer’s Engineer’s Estimate and the contractor’s Winning Bid. Historically, the accuracy of the Engineer’s Estimate and the Winning Bid vary. To account for this discrepancy, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recommends a contingency be included in all Engineer’s Estimates. Statistical analysis was performed to determine if state Departments of Transportation (DOTs) were currently meeting the recommended Bid Difference values. Data was collected from California, North Carolina, and Ohio from 2012 through 2014. Statistical analysis indicates that current practices to develop an Engineer’s Estimate met the FHWA recommended values. With …

Concrete and mortar are materials commonly used in construction. Their main compounds are cement, aggregates (sand and gravel) and water. In an effort to increase the sustainability of these materials, the idea of using recycled aggregates from ground old concrete and using it to make mortar and concrete has gained more interest. It has two advantages: it reduces the need to mine for raw materials and lessens the amount of old and defective concrete that is typically put in landfills. Over the course of my internship and shadow program with Pepper Lawson Construction and Ziegler Cooper Architects, I was able to explore the various career paths involved in the design, construction, and civil engineering fields. My work on the construction site of a high-rise apartment building located in the heart of Houston, TX allowed me first-hand experience working and learning alongside project engineers, contractors, building developers, and the construction team.

The Urban Oasis is designed to work within existing “pocket parks” in New York City as a combined rainwater collector, personal electronics charging station and resting designation for New Yorkers. Intended to not only lessen the demand on the city power grid by using renewable energy to charge devices, the urban oasis is also intended to mitigate grey water overfill in New York’s combined sewer system and, in general, serve as a model for responsible environmental stewardship in urban areas.

This study is designed to address the need for having a measure for Construction Performance on BIM-assisted construction projects. Through this study a new Construction Key Performance Indicator (CKPI) matrix is identified and created by the author. The CKPI could be used to assess BIM-assisted projects. Utilizing a sequential mixed methodology approach, academic and practitioner perspectives are assessed. A qualitative content analysis and quantitative descriptive analysis based on demographics are conducted to establish a better understanding of BIM and Construction Performance. A vented honeycomb structure with a plurality of honeycomb cells arranged in a hierarchical order and having a plurality of truss walls, each truss wall including a plurality of members. The vented honeycomb structure is fabricated by joining a plurality of sheets of trusses using any one of an expansion, a corrugation, and a slotting process. Fabrication can also occur by deposition, casting, additive, extrusion, or aligning and joining methods. The honeycomb cells, truss walls, truss wall openings, and truss wall members can be functionally graded.
