The fall of Rome was an urban affair. Alaric’s sack of the city in 410 CE may have been more emotionally jarring than genuinely disruptive, but its long echo down the corridors of history testifies to the imaginative power that the city of Rome held over citizens of its empire and their medieval descendants. But Rome was not the only city on whose monumental stage the empire played out its fate. The transformations that Late Antiquity wrought were enacted in urban microcosms from Gibraltar to the Euphrates. But even after they ceased to be ruled by a Roman emperor, communities …

This paper re-examines the iconic use of cruciform columns in the famous Barcelona Pavilion and the other ‘German’ projects of the architect Mies Van der Rohe. It extrapolates for the material itself to construct a theory about the meaning behind their design and iconography linking it to Shinkel and a coded national identify.

The Gothic movement in England began in the mid 12th century, drawing inspiration from the Gothic movement happening in France during roughly the same time. Abbot Suger, a French abbot and historian, is often considered one of the first Gothic architects. His renovations to the Basilica of Saint Denis in Paris are said to be the first example of a truly Gothic-style building. In England, the Gothic movement is split into four periods: Norman Gothic, Early English Gothic, Decorated Gothic, and Perpendicular Gothic.

Mosque Location In The Arabic Islamic City. The Case Of Islamic Cairo, Husam Khalil

Congregation mosque is among the most important historic city components, as it usually occupies a unique site in the city. This study aims to unveil the properties of mosque location in Islamic Cairo, being one of the most important Islamic cities. Space syntax techniques of spatial analysis were utilized in measuring locational properties, namely integration and choice values of street segments associated with a sample of mosque that represent major Islamic eras. Similarities and differences between different mosques and different eras were identified, and it was found that congregation mosque location is more significant than was initially thought, as it …
