Review Of Irving Gill And The Architecture Of Reform By Thomas S. Hines, Bruno Giberti
Review Of Irving Gill And The Architecture Of Reform By Thomas S. Hines, Bruno Giberti
Architecture
In a 1916 essay that was probably his most important written statement, Irving Gill railed against contemporary historicism and argued for a return to origins: "the straight line, the arch, the cube and the circle." His ideal was not the primitive hut but an equally convincing trope that he called "the stone in the meadow." This phrase implied a method by which the rational was to be brought into an intimate relationship with the organic: "We should build our house simple, plain and substantial as a boulder, then leave the ornamentation of it to Nature."

Hershey Arena: Anton Tedesko’S Pioneering Form, Edmond P. Saliklis, David P. Billington
Hershey Arena: Anton Tedesko’S Pioneering Form, Edmond P. Saliklis, David P. Billington
Architectural Engineering
Civil engineering structures are part of our cultural heritage. The story of who we are can be told, in part, by what we have built. There have been pivotal moments in civil engineering design history wherein a master engineer creates a pioneering structure. One major example is Anton Tedesko’s 1936 Hershey Ice Arena, the first large-scale thin shell concrete roof in the United States. Tedesko left all his papers, including the original design and analysis calculations of the Hershey shell, to the Princeton Maillart Archives. These documents, as well as other archival materials and photographs, provide insight into the design …

Mass Transfer And Benzene Removal From Air Using Latex Rubber Tubing And A Hollow-Fiber Membrane Module, Mark W. Fitch, Jeffrey Neeman, Ellen England
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A Dense-Phase Latex Rubber Tube and a Polyporous Propylene Hollow-Fiber Membrane Module (HFMM) Were Investigated for Control of Benzene-Contaminated Gas Streams. the Abiotic Mass Flux Observed through the Latex Tube Was 3.9-13 Mg/(Min·m2) for 150 Ppm of Benzene at Various Gas and Liquid Flow Rates, While a 100-Fold Lower Mass Flux Was Observed in the HFMM. after Seeding with an Aromatic-Degrading Culture Enriched from Activated Sludge, the Observed Removal Was 80% of 150 Ppm, Corresponding to a Mass Flux of 45 Mg/(Min·m2). the Observed Mass Flux through the HFMM during Biofiltration Also Rose, to 0.4 Mg/(Min·m2). Because the HFMM Had …
A Fire Risk Assessment Technique For Educational Establishments, Victor Hrymak, Noel O'Reilly
A Fire Risk Assessment Technique For Educational Establishments, Victor Hrymak, Noel O'Reilly
Articles
It is now widely considered as good practice to include fire risk assessment techniques when developing a fire risk management system. However there is little guidance as to how to evaluate the influence of organisational culture and human behaviour on the resultant level of fire safety. Since most accidents are caused by the failure of management systems, quantified risk assessment must take into account local safety management practices, or else it will not provide reliable information”.
This study tries to address this issue by developing a new fire risk assessment technique for assessing the fire safety management system of …

Development Of A Simplified Sustainable Facilities Guide, David F. Hargy
Theses and Dissertations
The Air Force has adopted the United States Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™) Green Building Rating System as the preferred self-assessment metric for sustainable development. LEED™ is designed for new construction and major renovations, and, within the Air Force, is most applicable for Military Construction (MILCON) projects. The Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence developed the Air Force Sustainable Facilities Guide to provide guidance and strategies to meet LEED™ requirements. The Air Force has not adopted a sustainable development guide or rating system that is most applicable for construction projects that are relatively low (compared …
Smart Growth And Land Acquisition Priorities: A Cursory Review, New England Environmental Finance Center
Smart Growth And Land Acquisition Priorities: A Cursory Review, New England Environmental Finance Center
Smart Growth
It is well-known and generally accepted that all undeveloped land in New England cannot forever be protected from development; nor would this be a desirable goal, as continued economic development and population growth are near certainties. For these and other reasons, private land trusts and government agencies generally use explicit criteria to prioritize their land acquisition activities and prospects.

Exploring The Constructability Of 'Imagined' Realities, Thomas Fowler, Iv
Architecture
In the third year of the 5-year Bachelor of Architecture Program, form•Z is used as the preferred 3D digital modeling tool. form•Z is used with a range of other 2D digital media (Photoshop, etc) along with 3D traditional-digital media (physical models, plan & section drawings) that allows the architecture students to go back and forth between multiple mediums during the design process. This particular methodology has the advantage of revealing more quickly and more clearly, weaknesses in the developing project as well as inconsistencies between a student’s original intentions (for example about how daylight will change the character of a …
