This thesis explores the use of criticism in the landscape architectural design studio. Criticism is a very useful tool in the communication of ideas and the evaluation of designs, yet its application in design studios has not reached its full potential in the discipline of landscape architecture. To develop an understanding of criticism as a pedagogical tool in the design studio, along with faculty and students expectations of criticism, this thesis uses a two-step approach. The benchmarks used for determining this include the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, the Universal Design Handbook and surveys of other campuses that have made greater strides in this area. This study establishes a set of guidelines for designing a therapeutic garden for autistic children. To understand how a garden may provide benefit, the literature on healing gardens is reviewed. The history of gardens in hospital settings and other healthcare institutions is examined. In addition, published work on the effects of nature on stress and health outcomes and theories as to why nature is restorative is included in the review of the literature. An investigation of Rafael Guastavino's arches has been conducted by means of finite element modeling and laboratory experimentation. A novel method of modeling laminated masonry tile construction via the finite element method has been devised. This technique takes advantage of the layered shell element features found in commercially available finite element programs. Historical Guastavino tiles have been tested to obtain material properties. These modem techniques have been employed in conjunction with Guastavino's original empirical design criteria to provide a better understanding of these historically significant structures.

When the Department of Special Collections at the Syracuse University Library acquired the papers of Werner Seligmann, an architect and former Dean of the Syracuse University School of Architecture, the opportunity presented itself to develop a model storage system that could be applied to the other architectural drawings in the Department. While not large in comparison to these other collections, the Seligmann Papers were sizable enough to give us a better understanding of the storage issues involved if we decided to undertake the task of re-housing our other drawings. The New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ) is one of the most seismically susceptible areas in United States. Deep alluvial soil deposit of the Mississippi Embayment overlies the NMSZ, which remains a major uncertainty for site response analysis. based on the experiment data, a simple constitutive soil model is developed to take into account the influence of the effective confining pressure on the shear modulus degradation and the viscous damping development in soil, and also the shear strain and the plasticity index. This paper explains how theories of realspace architecture inform the prevention of computer crime. Despite the prevalence of the metaphor, architects in realspace and cyberspace have not talked to one another. There is a dearth of literature about digital architecture and crime altogether, and the realspace architectural literature on crime prevention is often far too soft for many software engineers. This paper will suggest the broad brushstrokes of potential design solutions to cybercrime, and in the course of so doing, will pose severe criticisms of the White House's recent proposals on cybersecurity.

Recent developments have prompted a review of evaporative cooling technology as an effective means of cooling modern deep plan buildings. Prominent among these developments is the success of high temperature sensible cooling systems, particularly, chilled ceilings, which require a supply of cooling water at 14–18 °C. Crucial to the success of evaporative cooling technology, as a significant means of cooling in modern applications, is the ability to generate cooling water, in an indirect circuit, at a temperature which closely approaches the ambient adiabatic saturation temperature (AST) or wet bulb temperature (WBT). This investigation focused on the effects of overhang length on the web crippling capacity of cold-formed steel members. the current design recommendations in North America do not provide for an increase in web crippling capacity for end-one-flange loading when an overhang is present beyond the end support. the test specimens used for the investigation were single web C-sections and Z-sections. the current design requirements for end-one-flange web crippling capacity were found to be conservative for overhang lengths ranging from 0.5 h to 1.5 h , where h is the web depth. On the Morning of April 28, 1997, a Sinkhole Developed Beneath a Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Track. the Sinkhole Caused the Derailment of 22 Railroad Cars, Spilling Diesel Fuel from the Engines that Ignited, Resulting in a Fire and Injuries to Railroad Personnel. Railroad Personnel Filled the Sinkhole with About 500 Cubic Yards of Rock Fill, and Traffic Resumed While a Subsurface Study Was Carried Out. the Study Resulted in a Grouting Program Where 40 to 50 Cubic Yards of Grout Were Injected into the Subsurface. in August of 1999, the Track Subsided Again. a Second Investigation Conducted in …

C. C. Pat Fleming practiced landscape architecture in Houston and the surrounding South from the 1920s through the 1990s. He came to be considered one of Houston’s preeminent landscape architects, and his role in the profession cannot be overlooked. This thesis traces the evolution of Fleming’s design style over the course of his career, analyzing a selected cross section of his works against three design movements that occurred during his lifetime: the Beaux-Arts tradition, the Colonial Revival movement, and the Modernist movement.
