Performance Review Of Indoor Noise Criteria, Lily M. Wang, Erica Eileen Bowden
Performance Review Of Indoor Noise Criteria, Lily M. Wang, Erica Eileen Bowden
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
Currently there are a number of indoor noise criteria used to quantify the level of background noise in rooms, including Noise Criteria (NC), Balanced Noise Criteria (NCB), Room Criteria (RC), Room Criteria Mark II (RC Mark II) and others. This paper reviews the pros and cons of each of these and then compares the values measured in existing classrooms in the Omaha area. The authors are in the process of subjectively comparing these various criteria to determine which method best correlates with human perception. The subjective testing methods and preliminary results are discussed.
Modeling And Control Of Vinyl Chloride In Drinking Water Distribution Systems, Michael Beardsley, Craig D. Adams
Modeling And Control Of Vinyl Chloride In Drinking Water Distribution Systems, Michael Beardsley, Craig D. Adams
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In water distribution systems containing PVC pipe manufactured in the "early era" (prior to 1977), vinyl chloride can leach into drinking water resulting in vinyl chloride concentrations exceeding the 2 μg·L-1 maximum contaminant level. Field testing of dead-end segments of water distribution systems consisting of early-era PVC pipe was conducted to examine their initial intrapipe vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) concentrations based on a Fickian-diffusion-Based leaching model. the experiments showed a wide range of VCM concentrations within early-era PVC pipe ranging from less than 50 to more than 600 mg·kg-1. based on the diffusion modeling approach, a protocol was designed that …
North American Design Guidelines For Concrete Reinforcement And Strengthening Using Frp: Principles, Applications And Unresolved Issues, Antonio Nanni
North American Design Guidelines For Concrete Reinforcement And Strengthening Using Frp: Principles, Applications And Unresolved Issues, Antonio Nanni
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper reports on the North American state-of-the-art in the use of FRP composites in concrete structures. for new construction, FRP bars have been used as the internal reinforcement in concrete members to replace conventional steel rebars for a host of reasons. the principles for design and construction have been established and proposed to industry by the American Concrete Institute (ACI). for repair and upgrade, strengthening of concrete members with externally bonded FRP laminates or near surface mounted (NSM) bars has received remarkable attention. the design and construction principles for use in practice are being finalized by ACI. on the …
Property Value Assessment And The Irish Eia Process, Siobhaun Cawley
Property Value Assessment And The Irish Eia Process, Siobhaun Cawley
Masters
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) provides for the assessment of the likely significant effects of a proposed development in the environment. Due to the ambiguous nature of the legislation on EIA, there are widely differing views as to whether the impact of a proposed development o surrounding property values should be considered as part of the EIA process. The primary objective of this thesis was to establish if property values should be considered within the Irish EIA process. In this regard, the most relevant provisions of the EC Directive 97/11/EC and the corresponding Irish legislation (Part X of the Planning and …

Field Assessment Of Unreinforced Masonry Walls Strengthened With Fiber Reinforced Polymer Laminates, J. Gustavo Tumialan, Nestore Galati, Antonio Nanni
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Unreinforced masonry (URM) walls strengthened with composites were tested to failure at a decommissioned building in St. Louis, Missouri. the walls were subjected to out-of-plane loading. Previous work on URM as well as reinforced masonry walls strengthened with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) laminates has shown remarkable increases in capacity and ductility. However, most of this research work has been conducted in the laboratory, where it is difficult to reproduce real field conditions. in this context, this experimental program offered a unique opportunity for performing field experimentation on URM walls strengthened FRP laminates showing that shear compression led to controlling the …

Sustainable Environmental Design Education (Sede); A Curriculum Model For Architects And Landscape Architects, Margot Mcdonald, Polly Cooper, Ken Haggard, Cathleen Corlett

In 2000, the Governor of the State of California issued an executive order (D-16-00) that seeks to reduce costs and improve environmental performance of state buildings in all phases of construction, operations and maintenance. The California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB) has provided leadership in implementing this order through initiatives such as the Sustainable Building Task Force. In the realm of post-secondary education, CIWMB also sponsored the Sustainable Environmental Design Education (SEDE) program in collaboration with Cal Poly-SLO. The project will be used to survey and assess existing sustainable environmental design programs, generate a framework for sustainable design education of …
Model State Land Use Legislation For New England, New England Environmental Finance Center, Muskie School Of Public Service
Model State Land Use Legislation For New England, New England Environmental Finance Center, Muskie School Of Public Service
Legislation
Sprawl is neither the ordained nor the inevitable outcome upon the New England landscape. A coordinated response to sprawl by the public and private sectors is possible, and could dramatically improve land use patterns and reduce the cost of local government. For the New England states, such a response would include, among other elements, legislation to eliminate existing gaps in the land use laws of each state – gaps that presently encourage or sanction sprawling development. It would also include incentives for municipalities to think beyond their borders and to act with greater efficiency and effect. It is the purpose …

18 | Salvage Excavations At The Early Bronze Age Site Of Qiryat Ata, Amir Golani
IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority
Some 1400 sq m were exposed in the IAA excavations of the protohistoric site of Qiryat Ata. The study of the paleogeography reveals this location was an optimal area for exploitation of natural resources, including alluvial valleys, coastal habitats and forests, with stable water sources and extensive available farmland. The site yielded a wealth of stratified, well-dated architecture in a chronological sequence within the Early Bronze Age, illustrating the development from EB IB curvilinear structures, to late EB IB rectilinear forms with rounded corners, and finally EB II angular-cornered rectilinear buildings in a large, dense, urbanized town. The rich pottery, …

Tensile Characterization Of Frp Rods For Reinforced Concrete Structures, F. Micelli, Antonio Nanni
Tensile Characterization Of Frp Rods For Reinforced Concrete Structures, F. Micelli, Antonio Nanni
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The application of FRP rods as an internal or external reinforcement in new or damaged concrete structures is based on the development of design equations that take into account the mechanical properties of FRP material systems. the measurement of mechanical characteristics of FRP requires a special anchoring and protocol, since it is well known that these characteristics depend on the direction and content of fibers. in this study, an effective tensile test method is described for the mechanical characterization of FRP rods. Twelve types of glass and carbon FRP specimens with different sizes and surface characteristics were tested to validate …
Spatial Negotiations In A Commercial City: The Red Sea Port Of Mocha, Yemen During The First Half Of The Eighteenth Century, Nancy Um
Art History Faculty Scholarship
The city of Mocha in Yemen was one of the most important Red Sea ports of the early modern Arab world, handling the trade of spices, textiles, metals, local aromatics and coffee beans. This essay examines the urban structures that governed the needs and practices of merchants in the city during the first half of the eighteenth century. Drawing on contemporary Arabic chronicles, archival European trade documents, historical photographs, and field work in the city, it documents the conspicuous absence of a network of public trade structures, like the urban khan, the expected locus for trade in an Arab city …
