Optimum Control Of A Hybrid System For Seismic Excitations With State Observer Technique, Franklin Y. Cheng, Hongping Jiang
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents a theoretical study of a hybrid seismic response control system comprising a passive fluid viscous damper and an active control system with a hydraulic actuator and acceleration sensors. The analytical model of this system is derived in the discrete time domain with actuator and clamper dynamics considered. Based on digital control theory, a state observer is established for optimal control strategies of the hybrid system. This study shows that the hybrid system gains the advantages of both active and passive control techniques currently in vogue; and that, with the state observer technique, a seismic response control system …

This volume is devoted to the results of the extensive excavations, surveys and research by Claire Epstein of the Chalcolithic culture of the Golan. The Golan Chalcolithic culture was an egalitarian, clan-based society of small villages and farmsteads, with unique and outstanding cultural features, including the architecture and house plans, the characteristic pottery assemblages, and the distinctive basalt and flint artifacts.

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1994 brought new requirements for architects, designers, and drafters to apply Braille symbol sets at various locations of public and private buildings. With production of many drawings using computer-aided drafting, the opportunity exists to automate this process, solve the problem of text to Braille conversion, and satisfy the requirements of federal regulation. This paper presents a LISP programing code structure for use within the AutoCAD drafting and design '\ software to solve the Braille symbol set translation problem with both 2D and 3D representations. "This thesis examines the ability of architecture to educate through experience. Architecture creates environments which represents the history, folklore, and tradition of a region by way of semantics. individuals interact with the building and become part of it by providing their knowledge and recollection of the signs and symbols. Through the representation of symbols and the recreation of events, the building evokes the collective memory of the individuals who experience them. Folklore relies heavily on experience, as does architecture. The interaction of event, program, space, and form result in architecture that provides all the elements necessary to educate folklore.
