North Taiwan: Fishing Village Housing Redevelopment, Li Tiene Jan 1980

North Taiwan: Fishing Village Housing Redevelopment, Li Tiene

Architecture Master Theses

The unique architectural development of Ba-Dow-Tsu fishing village has been in my mind ever since the time, many years ago, when i first made it a habit of wandering with no fixed objective in mind through old town. Twenty years ago, one could enjoy many thoroughfares that still had about there the air or early Taiwan village a quiet Chinese peace created, in part, by the low horizontal lines of the central courtyard, terraced- houses. Those streets are now slums and ruins that can be enjoyed only in memory.

In the march of progress, we have ruthlessly destroyed all our …

Buildings And Grounds Of Yale University, Richard C. Carroll Ed. Sep 1979

Buildings And Grounds Of Yale University, Richard C. Carroll Ed.

Publications on Yale History

This third edition has been expanded to include the grounds as well as the buildings of Yale University. The date of publication follows closely the retirement of President Brewster and therefore includes the new buildings and the renovations of older structures completed during his term of office. The book also lists all Yale buildings now standing and used for university purposes and, where information is available, it records buildings no longer standing. Thus its purpose is mainly historical, to catalogue such basic facts as the date and style of construction, location, name of the architect, and the uses which the …

The Sacred Departments For Temple Work In Nauvoo: The Assembly Room And The Council Chamber, Lisle G. Brown Apr 1979

The Sacred Departments For Temple Work In Nauvoo: The Assembly Room And The Council Chamber, Lisle G. Brown

Librarian Research

The paper examines the physical layout of two rooms, one in the upper floor Joseph Smith's store, and the other in the attic of the Nauvoo Temple, for administering what is called the Mormon temple endowment. In both cases only temporary modifications were made to the interior rooms, using canvas partitions which were later removed. The text describes the appearance and arrangement of these modified interior spaces, based on contemporary historical sources, because the original buildings were completely destroyed during the 1800s.

Developing A Tentative Model Of Disposal Decisions, W. David Conn, Elaine C. Warren Jan 1979

Developing A Tentative Model Of Disposal Decisions, W. David Conn, Elaine C. Warren

City and Regional Planning

Concern over problems of resource depletion, environmental damage, and the ever-increasing costs of disposing of solid wastes has led to a search for new approaches to managing these wastes. One way of reducing the rate at which the wastes are first generated might be to extend the lifetimes of durable products. To assist policymakers in understanding how the lifetimes are determined, an exploratory study has examined factors influencing consumers' decisions to dispose of certain small electrical appliances. Selected findings of a household survey are presented here, focusing on 1) the frequency distribution of disposal choices and the reasons given for …

Cadmium In Forest Ecosystems Around Lead Smelters In Missouri, Nord L. Gale, Bobby G. Wixson Jan 1979

Cadmium In Forest Ecosystems Around Lead Smelters In Missouri, Nord L. Gale, Bobby G. Wixson

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

The development of Missouri's new lead belt within the past decade has provided an excellent opportunity to study the dissemination and effects of heavy metals in a deciduous forest ecosystem. Primary lead smelters, within the new lead belt have been identified as potential sources of cadmium as well as lead, zinc, and copper. Sintering and blast furnace operations tend to produce significant quantities of small particulates highly enriched in cadmium and other heavy metals. At one smelter, samples of stack particulate emissions indicate that as much as 0.21 lb of cadmium may be released to the atmosphere per hour. This …

Factors Affecting Product Lifetime: A Study In Support Of Policy Development For Waste Reduction, W. David Conn Aug 1978

Factors Affecting Product Lifetime: A Study In Support Of Policy Development For Waste Reduction, W. David Conn

City and Regional Planning

An exploratory study has been examined factors affecting the lifetimes of selected small electrical appliances, to assist in the development of policies to extend these lifetimes (for the purposes of conserving resources, protecting the environment, and reducing the costs of solid waste management). The study included (i) a consumer survey, (ii) in-depth interviews with manufacturers, and (iii) a limited investigation of second-hand markets. Tentative findings are that physical durability appears to be a key factor affecting the lifetime of a few of the products examined (particularly those that malfunction after less than three years' use) while the lifetimes of other …

Planning For Resource Recovery: Lessons From The California Experience, W. David Conn Apr 1978

Planning For Resource Recovery: Lessons From The California Experience, W. David Conn

City and Regional Planning

The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976, which emphasizes resource recovery as a goal, provides for states or regional authorities to prepare comprehensive solid waste management plans. A review of the experience in California, where solid waste planning has been required since 1972, shows that communities have generally hesitated to include resource recover in their plans; this seems to be due largely to technological uncertainties, to the existence of economic and institutional biases against recovery, and to the lack of financial assistance for planning and implementation. Some of these obstacles may be overcome, at least in part, by provisions …

The Neglect Of Socioeconomic Research By Us Energy And Environmental Agencies, W. David Conn Apr 1978

The Neglect Of Socioeconomic Research By Us Energy And Environmental Agencies, W. David Conn

City and Regional Planning

The published research plans of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the US Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) have each been criticized by the Office of Technology Assessment for focusing largely on the development of technological “hardware” and giving little attention to socioeconomic research (broadly defined). This paper first examines socioeconomic research areas that EPA might be expected to cover and shows that its plans for doing so are inadequate. The paper then identifies gaps in ERDA's coverage of socioeconomic research that remain unfilled even in the agency's updated plan. Several reasons for this neglect of socioeconomic research …
