Reinvigorating Urban Under Space:Towards A New Type Of Public Landscape, Yujia Wang, Gandong Cai
Reinvigorating Urban Under Space:Towards A New Type Of Public Landscape, Yujia Wang, Gandong Cai
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
The proposition of this paper is to examine the agency of landscape in subverting, energizing and reinvigorating a specific kind of deserted space in cities - Urban Under Space. The term Urban UnderSpace refers to residual infrastructural spaces, such as under-bridge space, abandoned subway stations, air raid shelters, etc. The wide availability and continued generation of Urban Under Space in cities that were investigated in North America and Asia reflect a problem in modern planning. But it also provides an opportunity of positioning these piecesas a network of new urban landscapes that can offer a unique and attractive public space …

Barriers To A Low Carbon Society In An Academic Community: A Quasi-Experimental Study At Rajamangla University Of Technology, Thailand, Chantamon Potipituk, Ariva Sugandi Permana, Erianto Er
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
As an exceedingly knowledgeable community that lacks commitment and support, the leaders of the university have attempted to promote a green society by various means, i.e.multimedia infographics and workshops. A study was conducted of the barriers to implementing a low carbon society among the students as well as the academic and administrative staff at Rajamangala University of Technology Rattanakosin, Salaya Thailand. This was done with a quasi-experimental study to understand the potential barriers implementing a low carbon society in an academic setting. A quasi-experiment was done due to resource constraints. The information required by this study was gained through a …

Continuity Or Discontinuity, Revisiting The Legacy Of Wali Sanga Mosquescase Studies Of Contemporary Mosques Of Nahdliyin In Malang, East Java, Yulia Eka Putrie, Widjaja Martokusumo, Bambang Setia Budi
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
Many mosques in East Java are built by the Nahdliyin and are culturally affiliated to Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the biggest Indonesian moderate Muslim organization. NU maintains a specific value system as the continuation of the Wali Sanga tradition. This paper discusses the representation of these values and traditions in the contemporary mosques of Nahdliyin in Malang, East Java. These mosques are where a great basis of the Nahdliyin experiences dynamic interaction with other Muslim groups take place. The results show that despite their pluralistic formal expressions, these contemporary mosques of Nahdliyinshare similar values and traditions with Wali Sanga mosques.

Enhancing The Potential Cooling Benefits Of Urban Water Bodies, Nedyomukti Imam Syafii, Masayuki Ichinose, Eiko Kumakura, Kohei Chigusa, Steve Kardinal Jusuf, Nyuk Hien Wong
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
In Saitama, Japan, a series of experimental studies has been conducted inside an outdoor scale model canopy to find an effective design solution of water bodies for improving urban thermal environmentand pedestrian comfort. Thus, the study result may help designers and planners to manage tradeoffs between the cooling effect demands, land-use limits and other design elements in urban environments. By modifying its physical properties, the present study shows a clear evidence of the mitigating capacity of urban water bodies. The result shows that generally, a bigger pond has greater cooling benefits. Nevertheless, by lowering the water temperature, the cooling benefit …

The Strategic Design Approaches For Chittagong Hill Areas To Reduce Risks Of Landslides And Exploring The Opportunity Of Tourism Development, Syed Monirul Islam, Maher Niger
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
Chittagong is the largest port city and second largest city of Bangladesh and contributes substantially to the economic development of Bangladesh. Chittagong is quite an attractive location. Surrounded by the rivers, hills and the sea, Chittagong possess the opportunity to uphold its image as a fascinating, multiple tourism destination where visitors can enjoy both the sea and hills. Chittagong has boundless opportunities for thousands of people living in the hilly areas. But unfortunately the hillsides are highly vulnerable to frequent and damaging landslides. Recent major landslides were caused by an extreme, higher than average, rainfall within a short period of …

Residential To Commercial Area Development: The Case Of Nimmanhemin, Chiang Mai, Thailand, Chompoonoot Chompoorath, Hiroaki Kimura
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
Nimmanhemin is a significant shopping area in Chiang Mai, whereshopping areas developed fromlong-distancetrade transport and developed into merchant communities, but Nimmanhemin beganas a residential area and was later developed for commercial purposes. Therefore, Nimmanhemin represents a unique development. This study focuses on the spatial transformation from a residential area into a commercial area and aims to discover the factors impacting the development of the residential area into one of today's most significant commercial areas in Chiang Mai, and study the adaptation of buildings which were not primarily created for commercial purposes. Even though the existing planning of the Nimmanhemin area …

Ethical Relativism And Critical Regionalism:An Ethical Viewpoint On The Non-Western Architectural Professions, Supasai Vongkulbhisal
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
This paper focuses on the ethical theories and practices relating to Critical Regionalism, Tropicality, and Contemporary Vernacular today. Ethical Relativism is selected as a main ethical philosophy to question, challenge, and examine the hybridized fusion that results when the complex structural dislocation of Western modern discourse is applied to different regional grounds far from its origin. Ethical Relativism denies that there is a single moral standard which is equally applicable to all people at all times. The empirically ascertained fact of this ethics is that there are a great many different and even conflicting rules and practices prevailing at different …

In The Folds: Transforming A City’S Identity Through Art And Social Purposes, Yichien Cooper
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
This autoethnographic narrative retraces my four-year journey as an art commissioner for a city that is transforming beyond the stigma associated with a significant role in early nuclear weapons to a growing agritourism industry. The looming pressure for change is just like when tectonic plates push against each other until there is a quick release, causing earthquakes and eruptions. In the midst of the changing forces, I consider how the arts fold in. There are two purposes in this article that investigates the complexity between civic development and art. First, I will (re)define and (re)frame (Short & Turner, 2013) the …

Provenance Of Place And Past: Designing A Bathhouse For Charlottesville (Print), Maya Chandler
Provenance Of Place And Past: Designing A Bathhouse For Charlottesville (Print), Maya Chandler
James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)
Site, to an architect, should comprise not only the topographical and physical markers of the place, but also the cultural, historical, atmospheric, ritualistic, or intangible qualities of place. New projects ask us to examine what has preceded the proposed architecture and invite it into the work that we place on a site—not ignoring the past, mowing it down, or covering it up—but allowing it to point us in the direction of an architectural intervention. This project redesigns the historic Albemarle County Jail in downtown Charlottesville, Virginia, into a bathhouse. The place-based bathhouse design acknowledges several key elements in the jail’s …

The Goose
Desert Pool {If every desert was once a sea} is a site-specific art project by Canadian artist Karen Miranda Abel completed in 2016 while artist-in-residence at Joya: arte + ecología, an arts-led research centre situated in an alpine desert within a national park in southern Spain. The elemental installation represents an envisioning of the ancient sea that occupied the Sierra de María-Los Vélez Natural Park millions of years before the current desert ecology, a time when its highest mountain peaks may have been islands.
