Urban /Architectural And Historic/Cultural Analyses Of Rural Settlements -Region “Reka E Keqe” In Kosova And Region “Reka E Epërme” In Macedonia, Binak Beqaj, Enis Jakupi
UBT International Conference
Rural settlement size and its extension are some of the main factors that is responsible for settlement success in achieving its development objectives. Interlinks between settlement functions and location; are dependent on the socio-economic general conditions of the society. These conditions were rapidly changing over the last century.
As case studies have been taken the region called “Reka e keqe” (eight rural areas) in Kosova and region called “Reka e eperme” (eleven rural areas) in Macedonia. Those regions have geographical position, territorial expansion, population, tradition and other similarities. Main parameters used for analyses of those rural settlements are to be …

Post Disaster (War) Rapid Reconstruction And Its Impact On Reducing Living Space At Residential Houses In Kosova, Lulzim Beqiri, Zejnulla Rexhepi, Mimoza Sylejmani
UBT International Conference
Reconstruction process as a huge need after disaster, a part that is creating emergency shelter for people in need, as well has a direct impact on living space as one of the emergency created after every disaster. This paper aims to identify the impact of intervention of humanitarian organizations without being coordinated and agreed on minimal living standards that will be applicable during reconstruction phase because of environment created after disaster. Kosova was exposed to the war on 1998-1999 and massive destruction of 250000 residential houses (EAR 2000) and as result within several years after the war was over, the …

The Importance Of Innovative Solutions For Information Flow In A Multinational Construction Project, Blerta Vula Rizvanolli
The Importance Of Innovative Solutions For Information Flow In A Multinational Construction Project, Blerta Vula Rizvanolli
UBT International Conference
Construction project presents highly complex one-of-a-kind environments which require engagement of many parties for a long time period. Data insertion from different sources should be managed and controlled avoiding conflicts and cost overruns. In addition to efficient and effective material flow, the management of construction projects is the most information-influenced industry, which entails timely and accurate communication between parties involved. Nowadays, innovative web-based solutions are applied to insure the inter-organization of the participants’ communication. Findings from the literature review have shown online information exchange in construction management to be of great importance. In this paper we present the case study …
The Architecture Of Tetova Between The End Of The 19th Century And The World War Two, Kujtim Elezi, Nuran Saliu
The Architecture Of Tetova Between The End Of The 19th Century And The World War Two, Kujtim Elezi, Nuran Saliu
UBT International Conference
The time period between the late 19th century and World War Two is known as a period of markant transformation in the Ottoman Empire. These changes influenced the city of Tetova in all aspects, such as political, economical, sociological, and architectural.
The goal of this paper is the presentation of different architectural styles in the city of Tetova during the above mentioned time period. The breaking point of the so- called ‘traditional style’ in architecture, in order to leave place for the ‘new’ one, is another tantative of the work. The traditional way of building was very acute during the …
Risk Assessment In The Implementation Of Construction Projects In Developing Countries, Bashkim Alili
Risk Assessment In The Implementation Of Construction Projects In Developing Countries, Bashkim Alili
UBT International Conference
The construction industry plays an important role in the economic growth and the socio-economic development, which are particularly important for the developing countries. The current general situation in the construction of buildings in a country like ours is that the product of a construction company is mainly characterized by the poor quality of work, exceeding the costs and the time for realization. These characteristics exist as many risks are taken into account very little in the project planning and realization or not taken into account at all. Therefore, it is necessary that the managing of the risks for improvement of …

Fiction As A Resource In Participatory Design, Eva Knutz, Tau U. Lenskjold, Thomas Markussen
Fiction As A Resource In Participatory Design, Eva Knutz, Tau U. Lenskjold, Thomas Markussen
DRS Biennial Conference Series
In recent years, co-design research has moved into the heart of business and organisational matters of concern. As a consequence of that fact, the idea of what design is capable of evolves into something that does not only encompass product and service design, but also at the same time changes organisations’ way of doing things – or in other words, it challenges the organisational culture and the mindset of the decision-makers as a way towards the successful embedding of a project within the organisation. This paper investigates how the development of a new service design project together with integrated co-design …
Perception, Meaning And Transmodal Design, Mathias Nordvall, Mattias Arvola
Perception, Meaning And Transmodal Design, Mathias Nordvall, Mattias Arvola
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Our perceptual system allows us to experience and make meaning of the world through different modalities. We can move between feeling, seeing and hearing things and still makes sense of our world. Our cognitive activities are transmodal. In interaction design this means that both our design processes and our users’ interactions are transmodal. We have gained insights into how transitions between modalities, both in the design context and in the users’ interaction context, modulate meaning and experience, by analysing three interactive systems: SimProv, VibEd, and Sightlence. We propose that a transmodal design approach facilitate designers to realize the communicative potential …
Design For Resourceful Ageing: Intervening In The Ethics Of Gerontechnology, Elisa Giaccardi, Lenneke Kuijer, Louis Neven
Design For Resourceful Ageing: Intervening In The Ethics Of Gerontechnology, Elisa Giaccardi, Lenneke Kuijer, Louis Neven
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper discusses an innovative approach to the design of technologies for older people. The approach contains a critique of “gerontechnology” as taking decisions out of the hands of older people and materializing what it means to live healthily and well into “foolproof” designs that easily become inappropriate in the variety of situations in which older people end up using them. The proposed design approach focuses on re-delegating such ethical decisions to the point at which technology is used. It does so by considering technologies as resources that can complement the ageing competences of older people and adapt in a …

A New Take On Testing: Evaluating Design Systems In Response To The Recent Natural Disaster In Nepal, Jazmine L. Brown
Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD
In this thesis project I analyze the destruction of the 2015 earthquake in Nepal, specifically in the structural and architectural collapse. I have focused my research on the areas with greatest documented destruction and vulnerability, specifically Kathmandu and the settlements in the Middle Hills. The introduction of a new lateral testing mechanism can provided much needed information on the seismic strengths of vernacular construction methods.
