This paper reviews a Sensor-Based Demand-Controlled Ventilation (SBDCV) system which seeks to provide fresh air for breathing and to dilute and exhaust pollutants and odours. Previous studies have demonstrated that the constant pressure system increases ventilation extract and inflow based on relative humidity levels and/or presence detection and works on the assumption that the level of ventilation provided is sufficient to control the concentration of all indoor air pollutants, including those that are not occupant generated. This paper presents the results obtained from monitoring the indoor air quality of eight dwellings that had undergone a fabric-first deep energy retrofit and …

Quantity Surveying students are required to study a vast spectrum of modules during their programme of study. Perhaps one of the most important taught modules on a Quantity Surveying programme and a core professional competency relates to building measurement. Many early stage quantity surveying students are introduced to building measurement via the concept of manual take-off which offers students a good grounding in the basic skills and good practices required to successfully measure a building project. However, manual measurement ultimately is no longer used in practice in any meaningful capacity and teaching it is a time-consuming process. The research explores …

Based on 137 responses, the report shows that most participating organisations have begun their digital transformation journey, with expected benefits including improved accuracy, operational efficiency, quality, cost reduction, and faster clash resolution. The findings indicate widespread use of common digital deliverables and increasing awareness of ISO 19650, CDEs, OpenBIM, and CWMF BIM requirements. However, the report also identifies persistent challenges, including skills gaps, uneven training provision, limited digital competence, and variable implementation of BIM requirements across public and …
Metamorphosis: An Evaluation Of The Adaptation And Re-Use Potential Of Suburban Housing For Older Homeowners, Michelle Moore
Metamorphosis: An Evaluation Of The Adaptation And Re-Use Potential Of Suburban Housing For Older Homeowners, Michelle Moore
Masters
Ireland’s population is ageing at a rate that is more than twice the EU average. Public policy in Ireland aims to support older persons to age-in-place. Over 80% of older adults in Ireland live in an owner-occupied home, following many decades of public policy promoting home ownership as the tenure of choice. Limited research has been undertaken on the housing adaptation options that could result in privately-owned homes being made more suitable for the evolving needs of the rapidly ageing demographic. This thesis addresses the hypothesis that, with the provision of an appropriate suite of enablers, older homeowners can be …

The Built Environment is one of the main contributors to global resource consumption, waste generation and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, exacerbating environmental degradation and climate change (MacArthur Foundation, 2022). Circular Economy and sustainability concepts have emerged as promising strategies to address those challenges (EUR-Lex, 2015; European Commission, 2019). The Circular Economy aims to minimise waste and resource depletion, while sustainability emphasises on meeting the current and future needs of society with minimal environmental impact (Pomponi and Moncaster 2017a; Çetin et al. 2021; MacArthur Foundation 2022). The digital transition, facilitated by technological advancements, can accelerate the adoption of Circular Economy principles …

Digitalisation For A Circular Economy (Dice), Jimmy Fahy, Conan O'Ceallaigh
Reports
The construction industry is the world’s largest consumer of resources and is responsible for approximately 40% of global carbon emissions. In EU countries, building infrastructure plays a more significant role in energy consumption (40%) and energy-related Green House Gas (GHG) emissions (36%) (European Union, 2024) and for Ireland, the total GHG emissions of the built environment are estimated at 23 MtCO2eq/yr based on the 2018 level, which accounts for approximately 37% of national emissions, comprising 23% from building operations and 14% from embodied carbon (EC) emissions (O’Hegarty and Kinnane, 2022). These current emissions levels are stark given Ireland’s current commitment …

Hygrothermal Risk Assessment Of External Wall Insulation Retrofit To Non-Traditional Wall Types In An Irish Context, Using The Glaser Method And A Heat, Air And Moisture Transient Model, Gareth Mcdonnell, Joseph Little
Articles
The Climate Action Plan 2019 targets the low-energy retrofit of 500,000 existing Irish homes before 2030.1 Up to 80 per cent of building failures can be attributed to moisture risks.2 The literature indicated that external wall insulation (EWI, ETICS) failures are mostly due to moisture ingress at junctions and interfaces. A hygrothermal risk assessment of EWI on three walls with rendered concrete/concrete blockwork/cavity walls in Dublin, Belfast and Belmullet was undertaken using transient numerical simulation and the Glaser method. The guidance, common practice indicates a preference for Glaser. The initial simulation results were compared to assess the appropriateness of Glaser. …

An Investigation Of The Physical And Thermal Properties Of Irish Hemp Fibres As A Loose-Fill Insulation Product, Killian Markey, Sameer Mehra Dr., David Palmer, David Knight, Timothy O'Leary
Conference papers
Construction and built environment sectors account for approximately 37% of Ireland’s carbon emissions. Of this 37%, 14% of the emissions consist of embodied carbon emissions from the construction materials from the production to the end-of-disposal of buildings. The construction industry can reduce its embodied carbon by using materials with a lower embodied carbon. Hemp fibre batt insulation is an example of a bio-based material and a lower embodied carbon alternative to conventional insulations. The existing hemp fibre batt insulation is typically composed of hemp fibres with a polyester binder. These polyester binders have higher embodied carbon while also being a …
