Architecture As Gateway: A Cultural Center In Annapolis, Maryland, Stephanie A. Brackbill

Architecture Thesis Prep

"I contend that a gateway can be created to link the two polar conditions without necessarily creating a physical passageway from one condition to the other, but by creating a link between past and present; A link between humanity and nature; a link between ignorance and understanding."

A Diamond In The Square, Christopher Guido Apr 1997

A Diamond In The Square, Christopher Guido

Architecture Thesis Prep

"When a traditional city element moves to the suburbs, it is detrimental to the element and to the city. The reinsertion of a separated city element into an urban situation, through the reestablishment of its physics, economic, and social relationship to the city, can serve to benefit the newly placed element and its context."

A Paradigm For The Construction Of Architectural Narrative, Sarah F. Holmes Oct 1996

A Paradigm For The Construction Of Architectural Narrative, Sarah F. Holmes

Architecture Thesis Prep

How does one develop a relevant architectural narrative within a society that traditionally has been and remains highly pluralistic?

Architectural meaning arises through the dialogue between a physical and a narrative structure.

This proposal concerns the inquiry into the physical and metaphysical structure of space. In this thesis I propose a system of analysis resulting in the creation of structure from which an architectural narrative may be revealed. Traditional (scientific) methods of analysis examine physical phenomena which organize and create the conceptual structure of the environment. I propose that the narrative structure, that is, the metaphysical structure, is equally valuable …

Benefits Of Community: Housing For People Living With Aids, Paul R. Coffman Apr 1996

Benefits Of Community: Housing For People Living With Aids, Paul R. Coffman

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The notion of a beneficial community is the primary concern in the creation of a program to provide housing and health care for people with AIDS (PWA). The program will provide long term housing for PWA as well as hospice care during the time of their dying.

Given the fact that the disease strikes without prejudice at all levels of society, not discriminating upon race, age or gender and that the victims tend to be concentrated within dense urban condition, the program will be located in a mixed socio-economic, residential, urban neighborhood: Boston's South End."

On Memory And Architecture, Stacey Hopkins Apr 1996

On Memory And Architecture, Stacey Hopkins

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The symbiotic relationship between architecture and memory is forged in each one's appropriation of the other to make connection in space and time; the fragmentation between present and past disappears as one place, through imagery, unites with another. Memory and architecture relate to one another in that they use man's perception of and empathy with imagery to recall particulars of place, the connection of one place to others, and the way that these connections might explain time in tangible terms. For memory, architecture symbolizes a point of reference in time - a proscenium against which experience can be recalled; in …

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The primary goal of this thesis is to investigate and test hoe an architectural intervention in a historical site will set a direction for future development of an urban fabric. The urban architectural intervention will be in a form of a modern building project, which shares a dialogue with the history and which will be based on the analysis of historical and contemporary precedents. Tha ability of the architectural intervention to express a regional and universal identity is the motivating concern. The following architectural issues will be addressed: Context, Process, Scale and Image."

A Waterfront Reclamation, Allen Rossignol Oct 1995

A Waterfront Reclamation, Allen Rossignol

Architecture Thesis Prep

"Due to industry changes, once prosperous maritime towns have been abandoned. The cities have been left as they were and have not adopted new functions or uses for their valuable asset, the water's edge. Although the city's maritime history and culture attract people, the public has turned its back on the waterfront resulting in non-urban, non-public spaces such as parking, run don properties and abandoned storage sheds. This disjunction between the city and the waterfront needs to be addressed."

"A city's waterfront can be reclaimed through the Archtiecture of Recreation in which the facilities and space are designed to heal …

A Flight Into Technology: An Investigation Of Building And Telecommunication Technology, Bruce A. T. Siska Oct 1995

A Flight Into Technology: An Investigation Of Building And Telecommunication Technology, Bruce A. T. Siska

Architecture Senior Theses

"A new physical infrastructure to support activities based on communications and the transmission of information is being developed. Part of this infrastructure includes the construction of "intelligent" buildings that are seen to play as important a role in improving of office workers as automation has played on the shop floor of manufacturing industry. The term "intelligent" is used to describe buildings which provide an adaptive environment of high quality, energy efficiency, security and safety, permitting optimized information flows - both internally and externally - so that its functionality is largely independent of location."

A New Home For The Philadelphia Orchestra, Avril Farnsworth May 1995

A New Home For The Philadelphia Orchestra, Avril Farnsworth

Architecture Thesis Prep

"Due to Philadelphia's position as a cultural center, there is a need to build upon the idea of the Avenue of the Arts as a cultural event within the urban fabric by celebrating the role of the Philadelphia Orchestra as a monumental symbol to the city...

The intent of this thesis will be to interpret the cultural event of the orchestra into contemporary terms; to explore the idea of architectural promenade and how it relates to the spatial experience; to elucidate the idea of cultural monument as an event within the existing city fabric."

The Providence Renaissance Center, Dante J. Boffi Apr 1995

The Providence Renaissance Center, Dante J. Boffi

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The intent of this thesis is to create an urban gateway through the architectural manipulation of a city's edge. Physical and visual linkages will be carried from an urban center to the surrounding context by using a specific piece of architecture as the focal point. Issues such as the pedestrian/city relationship and the notion of architecture as a cultural symbol will help to inform and direct the thesis."

The Monument And The Square: Evolving An Identity For Harvard Square, Kathleen Kulpa

Architecture Thesis Prep

Ideological Contextualism, Richard Curtiss

Architecture Thesis Prep

New Haven, CT

Yale University

Faculty and Cultural Center

""This thesis is an argument of an appropriate attitude toward contextualism in regard to modern monument and the built environment. Architecture should not be the appropriation of superficial architectural styles, but rather the development of a dialogue with the concepts, typologies and physical characteristics of the existing condition."

Multi-Media And Rare Books Addition - New Haven, Ct, Henry Hong Oct 1994

Multi-Media And Rare Books Addition - New Haven, Ct, Henry Hong

Architecture Senior Theses

"This proposal is a study and experiment into what the role of architecture (library) is, in the information age. The question of what it is about a certain place or building that people retreat to and gather, and experience something more than an active computer screen. How, architecturally, it can transform or 'bridge' itself from historical and traditional building types that it critically addresses these issues."
