"Digital technologies have led to the transformation of different types of information into binary form. This transformation changes the way one perceives materiality, space, and its relationship to information. On one level. cyberspace creates a condition in which communication, travel, and education occur at a fast and efficient rate. On another level, cyberspace allows one to exist within a different condition, another world created by simulation and virtual reality. However, one cannot engage these virtual worlds without the existence of physical space. Aside from being an essential element for human existence, physical space evokes human contact, which must occur to …

"The architectural blurring of genered space. IMages are presented to society as the representation of men/women, and what it means to be one versus the other. This imagery takes form in the products that are produced and dvertised. Architecture will therefore take on the role of (re)presentation, meaning the presentation of products and the representation of genes, through the investigation of binary opposites. These binary opposites, those that are assumed by society, become the architectural elements to demonstrate the presumed differences between genders. The intervention which establishes a blue between these binaries advocates a degenderization of architecture."

"The work presented here is the product of a year-long process that is the culminating experience of a professional education in architecture. It is a process that stresses inquiry and product, research and design, writing and visualization. It has been along-established goal at Syracuse that the final efforts of both the undergraduate and graduate prgrams be indistinguishable from ont another; thus the mixture of undergraduate and graduate award winners.
Each student is advised by a committee of three and the final reviews are graded by a committee of five. Following the final reviews a panel of outside experts is invited …
Imageability Of Place, Sara Sachs
Imageability Of Place, Sara Sachs
Architecture Senior Theses
"This thesis is an investigation into the role of architecture in the imageability of place. Architecture as built form acts as the structure by which an observer measures his or her position relative to the environment. A highly imageable structure, therefore, has the ability to significantly aid the observer in navigation through the built environment. This investigation focuses on the elements that allow a structure to become imageable and, ultimately, how architecture can use these elements to achieve a higher imageability of place."

"It is the intent of this investigation to explore the translation which occurs between architectural drawing and built architecture. This translation occurs over a gap which exists between the realm of conception and the realm of construction. All forms of architectural representation (drawings, computer or physical models) bridge theis gap in some way and, by doing so, translate architectural meaning."

"Properties such as light, scale, and proportion form spaces that effect out perception of a place, but light is most important. The creation of a space and the sequence to reach an area, according to these properties, will affect positively the contemplative state of mind of an individual or a community. The application of said properties, but most importantly light, through the construction of view, forms, materials, textures, and the use of colors will create a narrative that will encounter and achieve individually or collectively a contemplative state of mind.'

"The thesis became an architectural exploration of what makes neighborhoods and community at two scales: at the scale of the city (macrocosm), represented by the urban plan; and at the scale of the individual (microcosm), represented by the concept of house and housing. At these two contrasting scales, the main focus of the study was:
To explore how an urban design can shape community; To explore the role housing plays in the making of urban fabric/neighborhood."

"This thesis examines the ability of architecture to educate through experience. Architecture creates environments which represents the history, folklore, and tradition of a region by way of semantics. individuals interact with the building and become part of it by providing their knowledge and recollection of the signs and symbols. Through the representation of symbols and the recreation of events, the building evokes the collective memory of the individuals who experience them. Folklore relies heavily on experience, as does architecture. The interaction of event, program, space, and form result in architecture that provides all the elements necessary to educate folklore. "The Buddhist Temple form has remained unchanged in the last 2,500 years. The thesis will become an exploration of contemporary issues of acculturation and transition of Buddhism in the United States. The thesis will examine architecturally, the individual spirit of contemplation and meditation of a monistic religion. This allows the thesis to transform, architecturally and typologically, a Buddhist Temple and Monastery of the Theravada Sect, with a Religious Center.

This proect will examine issues of surveilance and control, coundary and institutions, as a contemporary critique of nineteenth century practices of formation and re-formation. Furthermore, the investigation will examine the evolution of institutional confinement, and propose a re-sacrilization of punishment through rituals of discipline.

Even with little remaining industrial presence in Amsterdam, NY the relics of industrial prosperity still hold an important urban identity. They represent the city as it was originally designed. I propose that by reprogramming a large section of integrated, industrial urban fabric, it is possible for the city to reclaim its identity and grow. Most early American industrial architecture is inherently urban. only later when planning boards purged industry from the city center because of the side effects if an industrial core, did the evolution on the industrial satellite city emerge. The mill (grist, textile, powder, etc.) was the urban …
