Commercial Vertical Farm Design Phase 1, Tyler Tappin, Bryan Gomes
Commercial Vertical Farm Design Phase 1, Tyler Tappin, Bryan Gomes
Architectural Engineering
Until recent years, vertical farming, or urban agriculture, has usually been referred to as more of a science fiction concept than a realistic means of production. However, it is becoming increasingly apparent that these urban cropgrowing structures are not only technologically feasible, but efficient. These structures are entering the realm of economic feasibility as well, appearing in niche markets near large cities. Most of the facilities, however, are generally restricted in size to singlestory buildings. The objective of this project was to design a multi story structure that would be wellequipped to house a large vertical farming operation. Some of …

Experimental Building Demonstration Model With Viscous Fluid Dampers, Blake Thomas Reeve, Brianna Jean Kufa, Aden Malek Stepanians, Sophie Carmion Ratkovich
Architectural Engineering
The Architectural Engineering major places a heavy emphasis on structural dynamics and the role of wind and seismic loading in building analysis and design. Buildings of high importance that are critical to community function, such as hospitals, often utilize supplemental damping devices like supplemental viscous fluid dampers or base isolators to reduce the overall demands on the structural system. The design and analysis of these dampers are typically not taught at the undergraduate level, and is frequently performed by mechanical engineers, in lieu of structural engineers.
To better understand and research building behavior with supplemental damping devices, our multi-disciplinary team …

Benefits Of Personalized Construction Management Software: A Case Study, Mitchell S. Brodnansky
Construction Management
In today’s construction industry, one of the most important aspects of any project, aside from health and safety, is the ability to increase productivity through proper management applications. There are an abundance of programs available to today’s industry (Patterson, 2015); however, some companies are creating their own versions. Many of these programs are tailored to the specific needs of the individual companies. This case study is an in-depth evaluation of personalized construction management software that was implemented by NOVO Construction. It also evaluates the employee preference of personalized software versus software readily available on the market today. The result of …

Rammed earth is a sustainable building technique that has been around for thousands of years, and is still being used today. It minimizes environmental impacts by reducing the need for the many resources we use to produce building materials. The purpose of this paper is to test soils in San Luis Obispo to see if they contain the strength characteristics needed to build structural components using rammed earth. After the soils have been collected they will be mixed with a small percentage of cement, and compacted into test cylinders. A compressive test will be conducted after 7 days, and the …
Is Zero Net Energy 2020 Actually Attainable, Perceptions Of Various Professionals Effected, Michael Aldridge
Is Zero Net Energy 2020 Actually Attainable, Perceptions Of Various Professionals Effected, Michael Aldridge
Construction Management
California has created a mandate that will require all new residential buildings to become Zero Net Energy by 2020. Some are already doing it others don’t know what it means, and some don’t think it will be possible. Those that already do it are doing it without any extra cost. All that is required is, on average, a 4KW roof solar panel system. This is something that easy to install and only requires a little more planning during the design phase. There are many other things that a designer and builder can do to successfully reach ZNE including focus on …

Hearst Lecture: Gary Hack - Disruptive Changes And The Pattern Of Cities, Gary Hack
Focus
Today I want to talk about the future, but I do so by first looking back, focusing on the moments in a city’s long history when transformative change occurs. I am interested in this topic because I see a lot of cities planning and struggling to do things that have been on their agendas for many years. However, as planners, urban designers, and landscape architects, we need to be thinking about things that will be needed 10 to 15 years from now. I don’t see many cities reinventing their future in the plans they are making. There are reasons for …
